The Perfect Couple Cast Protests Uncomfortable Scene with ‘Mutiny’ Action

The Perfect Couple is currently trending as Netflix’s latest crime thriller, a compelling genre that explains why many cast members were hesitant to participate in the peculiar dance sequence featured in the inaugural episode.

Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, The Perfect Couple premiered on Netflix this week, offering viewers yet another thrilling tale revolving around wealth and power, with Nicole Kidman leading the cast.

Beginning with a mysterious murder and a plethora of suspects reminiscent of The White Lotus, this new drama explores the dark secrets of a family. However, it starts with an unexpected tone shift, as the opening scene presents a grand dance routine featuring the entire cast.

Set against a beach backdrop, the ensemble—clad in elegant evening attire—performs a choreographed number to Meghan Trainor’s hit song, ‘Criminals.’ It’s no surprise that the majority of the actors were initially uninterested in participating.

Meghann Fahy, portraying the influencer Merritt, disclosed to Variety that they even initiated a WhatsApp group chat aimed at canceling the sequence.

“Everyone was on that group saying they didn’t want to do this because we just didn’t understand,” she explained. “I actually have a really, really huge issue with learning choreography, so I was very nervous about it.”

Ishaan Khattar, who plays Scooter, added: “I don’t think any of us could make sense of doing this choreography in these characters. We’re like, ‘Wait where does this fit into the scheme of things? This was not part of the assignment!’”

Even Kidman, who portrays matriarch and renowned author Greer, admitted she required some persuasion. “Because I didn’t feel like Greer would dance! I felt like Greer would watch,” she said. “But I danced as Greer. I think it’s great and I’m so glad they got us all to do it because there’s some joy in it.”

Contrastingly, one cast member was eager to embrace the dance sequence: Liev Schreiber.

“I wasn’t in that [WhatsApp] chain,” he noted. “The entire cast had a mutiny about this idea except for me; I was already in my trailer practicing the dance moves. I just like dancing and I was kinda disappointed when it came out that I’m not in it more because I thought I did it really well.”
