If you were unable to see The Punisher’s cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, you can take comfort in knowing that the best Punisher movie ever made is still available for you to watch.
Despite being mentioned multiple times, The Punisher does not make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, unlike many other unexpected cameos. This absence is particularly noteworthy as The Punisher is one of the rare Marvel characters to have multiple live-action movies based on his story.
Despite multiple hints at sequels, no official movie was ever made. Nevertheless, an unofficial sequel was uploaded on YouTube and had a significant influence on the character’s contemporary portrayals, which may surprise you.
The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, released in 2012, debuted at an unconventional moment in history. However, this short film is widely recognized as one of the most accurate portrayals of The Punisher in cinema.
The Bootleg Universe is a multimedia project led by producer Adi Shankar, renowned for his work on Netflix’s Castlevania and the upcoming Devil May Cry anime. This is its inaugural installment.
Despite its controversial projects like Power/Rangers in 2015, Shankar’s Bootleg Universe gained notoriety over the years. However, it all began with The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, which is an impressive project to launch with due to its unexpected level of authenticity.
One of the notable aspects of Dirty Laundry was the return of Thomas Jane, who had previously portrayed Frank Castle in the 2004 film The Punisher. Additionally, the short film featured a small appearance by Ron Perlman, who was approaching the end of his tenure on Sons of Anarchy at the time of filming.
This is a typical Punisher tale. Frank is residing in a van on the busy streets of New York, simply trying to do his laundry. However, a gang starts causing chaos for innocent bystanders. Despite his efforts to stay out of it, Frank is eventually compelled to step in.
The ensuing scene is a brutal display of violence, as Frank cleverly and with the help of a bottle of Jack Daniels, takes down the entire gang. The graphic effects portrayed are highly disturbing, and if you are unable to tolerate scenes of blood spurts or multiple bones protruding from limbs, this short film may not be suitable for you.
Despite being a glorified Marvel fan film released while The Avengers was still in theaters, The Punisher: Dirty Laundry was a highly discussed topic upon its release. Its impact has continued to be felt today, with the MCU unintentionally contributing to its lasting legacy.
In his interview with ScreenGeek in 2016, Jon Bernthal credited Dirty Laundry as the inspiration for his portrayal of The Punisher. Thomas Jane’s performance has often been overlooked in the list of actors who have played the character, but his subtle mannerisms and nuanced acting in this film could be seen as a precursor to Bernthal’s interpretation.
Jane’s final performance as The Punisher in Dirty Laundry would mark the end of her role, at least temporarily. However, Bernthal is set to return as the character in Daredevil: Born Again, scheduled for release in March 2025.
