The Revival of Liquid-Filled Mice

The Revival of Liquid-Filled Mice

In an effort to revive the trend of liquid-filled accessories, Skeuoss, a tech-inspired brand from the 2000s, has recently released its latest product, the aqua computer mouse.

The popularity of vintage technology has experienced a revival. The impact of Windows XP’s era is evident in various places, such as the translucent plastic covers designed for the Steam Deck and companies reviving iconic devices like the original iPod.

As of recently, Skeuoss, a brand that focuses on nostalgia, has revealed two ‘Frutiger Aero’ gaming mice that closely resemble those from the 2000s era.

The aqua mouse comes in two designs, one featuring a floating globe and a clownfish, and the other showcasing a dolphin. The liquid inside these vintage peripherals does not enhance accuracy in gaming, but rather serves as a purely aesthetic element.

Despite the liquid-filled backs, each of these nostalgic mice is still equipped with both Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless connectivity. Additionally, despite their compact designs, they weigh 105g and have a DPI of up to 1000.

To add to the nostalgia, these adorable mice can also be used with Windows 98, perfect for those who still have an old desktop in their possession.

Inspired by the Days of Windows XP

Despite the lack of written information about the mythical aqua mice from the 2000s, they were quite common, often used as promotional items by various brands such as Intel and Hello Kitty. These liquid-filled mice were readily available.

The liquids typically featured figures that were cleverly related to the company, such as a miniature tractor for the John Deere mouse or a branded logo floating in the liquid.

While aqua mice may not be considered highly sought-after collector’s items, they are readily available for purchase on platforms such as eBay and other second-hand sites. Despite this, they have gained a dedicated following over time, as evidenced by the existence of a SubReddit, r/AquaMouse, with 1.3k members at the time of writing.

Instead of relying on second-hand websites, Skeuoss made the decision to launch their own mice, drawing inspiration from the days of Windows 7/Vista and the countless hours spent chatting on MSN Messenger.

The name ‘Frutiger Aero’ is derived from a design style popular in the 2000s. This style is characterized by its use of glossy textures, natural elements, and vibrant colors, all of which are reflected in the Skeuoss designs.

Both versions of the ‘Frutiger Aero’ Aqua Mouse can be pre-ordered for $29.99 each from the Skeuoss website and Amazon. Despite battery and liquid regulations, both models are eligible for shipping to the US.

Despite the high demand, there is only a limited amount of stock available. To ensure you can add that nostalgic touch to your setup, Skeuoss advises reserving your mouse as early as possible.
