Season 2 of The Rig has officially premiered on Prime Video, bringing thrilling new developments to the forefront. Here’s a recap of how the season wraps up and what it means for the future, specifically the potential for a Season 3.
Initially released in January 2023, The Rig features an impressive cast, including Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Iain Glen, and Mark Addy, who face off against a mysterious aquatic force known as the Ancestor.
However, the series’ true antagonist appears to be Pictor, an unscrupulous energy corporation perpetrating environmental devastation beneath the North Sea.

The Confrontation: Pictor vs The Ancestor

Pictor, having devastated the North Sea’s ecosystem, eyes the Arctic next, while striking a deal to obtain information regarding the Ancestor’s heart, with a malevolent plan to incapacitate it.
Under the leadership of their new head, Darian York, Pictor speeds up its efforts, resulting in a frantic race to locate the Ancestor. The antagonistic character Bremner unleashes toxins towards the heart, but Rose and Fulmer attempt to intervene with their Rover.
Though they seem to arrive too late, Rose takes a bold step, donning an underwater suit to approach the Ancestor, urging it to reveal itself to the world. In a dramatic display, the Ancestor illuminates oceans worldwide, effectively thwarting Pictor’s sinister schemes.
Despite the victory, Rose and Fulmer find themselves stranded, with their Rover losing power. Fortunately, the crew of The Stac, led by Magnus, arrives just in time to rescue them from their perilous situation.
Setting the Stage for Season 3
The end of Season 2 sets the stage for a captivating Season 3, where the reality of the Ancestor has now entered the public consciousness, with its role in healing the planet following Mass Extinction Events poised to have significant repercussions for humanity.
On a more personal note, York faces immediate challenges, with Pictor’s rights deal collapsing, and financial instability threatening his new position.
However, Lennox, York’s predecessor, warns that Pictor’s operations are linked to a larger conspiracy, ominously stating, “This isn’t over… the people we’re fighting don’t give up.”
Fulmer responds with determination, declaring, “Neither do we,” suggesting that the battle against Pictor is far from concluded. If Amazon gives the green light for a third season, viewers can expect the return of Rose, Fulmer, Magnus, and the rest of the team in their ongoing fight against nefarious forces.
