On October 8, 2024, it was announced that the highly anticipated anime film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles from MAPPA is set to premiere on Friday, January 31, 2025. This announcement coincided with the release of four captivating character visuals showcasing the main figures from the story.
The Rose of Versailles, a renowned romance-drama manga authored and illustrated by Riyoko Ikeda, was originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Margaret magazine from 1972 to 1973, with a revival run from 2013 to 2018.
Release Date for The Rose of Versailles Anime Film Announced
On October 5, 2024, the anime film’s official profile on X disclosed that a nationwide screening tour will kick off in Japan starting January 31, 2025.
This update was accompanied by the unveiling of visuals for the series’ key characters: Oscar François de Jarjayes, Marie Antoinette, André Grandier, and Hans Axel von Fersen.
The character visuals are expected to serve as the Mubichike Card Type Advance Ticket images. Ticket sales will initiate on October 11, 2024, exclusively at the respective screening locations.
The visual featuring Oscar François de Jarjayes portrays her as the fierce Commander of the Royal Guard, sword drawn, and surrounded by flames. Meanwhile, Marie Antoinette is depicted in an exquisite blue gown, enveloped by vibrant red roses.
The visual of André Grandier captures him leaning against a balcony, gazing out over a body of water. Lastly, Hans Axel von Fersen’s portrayal shows the Swedish Count observing leaves gently falling from nearby trees.
Ai Yoshimura will helm the direction of this anime film at MAPPA, having previously worked on productions such as Daily Lives of High School Boys and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU.
Scriptwriting for the film is entrusted to Tomoka Konparu, known for her work on Uta no Prince-sama – Maji Love 1000%, while renowned composer Hiroyuki Sawano (famous for Attack on Titan) will take charge of the music alongside Kohta Yamamoto from 86:Eighty-Six.
Character designs are created by Mariko Oka. With the presentation of character visuals, she aimed to infuse distinct charm into each character. While André’s design maintains simplicity, she focused on illustrating his emotions for Oscar through his expressions and gaze. Mariko expressed her aspiration to draw more of Oscar and André in the future.
