A comprehensive exploration of Netflix will touch upon the essential elements, but let’s delve into the specifics of the true crime narrative and the fate of Stalion.

What is the documentary about?

The Untold documentary, narrated by Connor Stalions, delves into the purported sign-stealing scheme in Michigan in 2023.

Netflix is sharing their perspective in one of the largest college football scandals to date.

True story

In 2023, an inquiry was launched by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to look into allegations of sign-stealing against the Michigan Wolverines.

The Wolverines hired Stalions as an offensive analyst.

Sign-stealing refers to the practice of deciphering hand signals used by coaches to communicate with players during games, for those who are unfamiliar with the term.

Stalions have been accused of violating NCAA Bylaw 11.6.1, which states that in-person scouting of future opponents off-campus during the same season is not allowed.

Despite the likelihood that other staff members were aware of his actions, Stalions has been singled out as the scapegoat and labeled as the ringleader. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has denied having any knowledge of the situation.

Additional cases of sign-stealing were soon brought to light. According to a former employee of a competing team, who spoke with the Associated Press, it was part of his responsibilities to steal signs, including those of Michigan.

Stalion’s Journey to the Wolverines

In January 2022, the organization recognized a former Marine as their ‘Coach of the Month’ and shared his story. He had been a part of the Soldiers to Sidelines program.

Stalions expressed, “I had always aspired to become a coach, but being given the chance at a young age shifted my motivation. Prior to that experience, my goal was to coach for the X’s and O’s and to win games.”

In addition, he conveyed his ethos, stating that the primary lesson is that the knowledge possessed by coaches is less important than the knowledge acquired by players. He also emphasized the importance of either properly teaching a concept or allowing it to happen.

“The speaker emphasized that while coaches may strategize and meet for extended periods of time, the true significance lies in how they communicate with their players.”

It is the players who ultimately determine the outcome of the games, and it is our responsibility to effectively communicate with them and establish the expectations. If they are not meeting these expectations, it is likely due to either inadequate communication on our part or a lack of accountability.

Where Stalions is now

The investigation into Connor Stalions began in November 2023, leading to his resignation.

Prior to his resignation, he was placed on paid suspension. Internal pressure can often play a role in prompting departures such as his; they are frequently encouraged instead of termination by governing bodies to ensure accountability is acknowledged.

Despite allegedly breaking sporting regulations, his actions were not severe enough to warrant imprisonment. As a result, he is able to share his perspective in the docuseries.

The premiere of Sign Stealer, directed by Micah Brown, is set for August 27, 2024 as part of the UNTOLD film series.

The remaining two stories in Untold Volume 4 focus on the killing of Steve McNair and the journey of US Women’s National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo.
