One of the most intriguing enigmas in Bryan Bertino’s series of psychological horror films, The Strangers, is the true identity of Tamara. The trilogy will finally unveil the answer to this question.
Renny Harlin, the director of Chapter 1 of The Strangers, announced that the third installment of the franchise will delve into the identity of the character Tamara.
“According to Harlin, our goal was to bring the audience on a journey. As the movies progress, they become more grandiose while still maintaining the sense of confinement, fear, and gritty tone that is so integral to the story.”
In the initial 2008 film, a pair residing in an isolated summer residence receives an unexpected visit from a strange woman who inquires about Tamara’s whereabouts. This sets off a chain of events leading to a night of violence and killing, as the couple desperately tries to escape from three masked assailants.
Throughout the film, Tamara remains a mystery, never fully revealed or explained. This trend continues in The Strangers: Prey at Night, as an unmasked Dollface inquires about Tamara’s whereabouts before being abruptly dismissed. Unfortunately, the family soon becomes the next victims of the three masked killers.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 marks the beginning of a new trilogy, leaving space for the character of Tamara to be further developed. Producer Courtney Soloman explained that upon obtaining the rights to the films, they were able to expand upon the overarching story.
“He mentioned that to properly convey the story, one must return to its original source. As it stands, the premise is already quite strong, so why not use it as a foundation and expand upon it for a more elaborate and character-driven horror tale? To achieve this, it was necessary to delve into the perspectives of both the protagonists and antagonists. Thus, I embarked on the project and eventually produced a 285-page script.”
To some, Tamara was seen as a mere ploy. It served as a means for the murderers to engage with their future targets and partake in a twisted game. However, a follower on X/Twitter commented, “Oh… I hadn’t thought about the fact that Tamara could be an actual person and not just a phrase used to check for someone’s presence. That’s intriguing.”
The first installment of The Strangers, Chapter 1, is set to be released in May, followed by the release of the two sequels in 2024. In the meantime, you can browse through other horror films to enjoy.
