The Egghead arc of One Piece has been extremely captivating, not only because it has kept readers on their toes with speculation, but also because it has raised doubts about the power of Luffy’s Gear 5. Following the defeat of Kaido, widely known as the strongest man alive, at the end of Wano, it appeared that Luffy had achieved an unprecedented level of strength and ability.
Despite possessing the power of the sun god Nika, many believed that Luffy would easily defeat his opponents with one attack. However, the prolonged fights against Lucci and Kizaru left fans perplexed. Oda seemed to have difficulty establishing a consistent power hierarchy, and his inconsistent implementation of Haki only added to the confusion.
Upon further examination, it appears that the Straw Hats may also warrant some scrutiny. It is possible that their rigorous training during the timeskip has not lasted as long as anticipated, as evidenced by events in One Piece chapter 1120. This raises questions about the true purpose of their training.

The Tragic Loss of a Straw Hats Ally in One Piece Chapter 1120 Sparks Training Worries
Based on spoilers for One Piece chapter 1120, readers can expect to see Atlas make a significant sacrifice for the Straw Hats. In the upcoming chapter, it is revealed that Nusjuro will be in pursuit of the Thousand Sunny. Lilith expresses concern that a collision or course deviation caused by Nusjuro could result in disastrous outcomes.
Atlas will appear on the ship and strike Lilith with a punch, rendering her unconscious and cutting off her signal. Atlas will carefully orchestrate this action to deceive York into thinking that Lilith has been neutralized, in order to prevent the Elders from seeking retribution. Usopp and Chopper, who will be present during the altercation, will be caught off guard by this unexpected twist of events.
Despite her request for their protection, Atlas will continue to ensure their safe passage out of Egghead and towards Nusjuro. However, during the journey, she will unfortunately lose her arm. Despite this setback, she will still manage to successfully move Nusjuro away from the Thousand Sunny. In a final act of sacrifice, Atlas will detonate herself and create a massive explosion, ultimately destroying half of Nusjuro’s face.
At the same time, the Straw Hats aboard the ship – Jinbe, Zoro, Brook, and Nami – will seize the chance created by Atlas’s sacrifice and utilize the coup de burst to flee. In contrast, Chopper and Usopp will be overcome with emotion, expressing their heartfelt appreciation to Atlas for his assistance.
This deeply emotional moment highlights the Straw Hats’ failure to protect their allies. Luffy had made a clear promise to Vegapunk and Sentomaru to keep Vegapunk safe. Unfortunately, he was unable to fulfill his pledge. Similarly, Jinbe, Zoro, and Brook also fell short as they allowed Atlas to make the sacrifice, prompting doubts about the adequacy of their training during the timeskip.
Despite the manga having over 500 chapters between the timeskip and the present day, only a few months have actually passed. This is because the Straw Hats spent most of that time undergoing intense training in preparation for the New World and the challenges it would bring. The purpose of the training was to ensure that they were capable of facing powerful enemies, such as the Yonko, and to prevent any tragedies like Ace’s death or Luffy’s inability to protect his crewmates from happening again.
Despite two years of intense training, Luffy was finally able to defeat the powerful Yonko Kaido with the help of his Devil Fruit Awakening. However, when confronted by the Five Elders, he and his crew have shown to be lacking the necessary strength and must now flee to Elbaph to avoid further danger.
