<p>Just weeks after its theatrical debut, “The Substance”has started appearing on various torrent platforms, raising questions among viewers about how this may have occurred.
This thrilling horror film, one of the most anticipated releases of 2024, is generating a significant buzz on social media.
Unfortunately, part of its rising popularity can be attributed to unauthorized uploads. High-definition versions began to surface online on October 12, only a short time after the movie launched on September 20.
In the wake of the leak, snippets and full scenes have been making their rounds on social networks, with some fans expressing their frustration about how “the videos are flooding my timeline.”
What remains unclear is the origin of these leaks. A discussion on Reddit suggested that the torrent may have derived from a movie theater’s hard drive, although the validity of this claim has been debated among users.
As one commenter pointed out: “The movie theater versions are marked with unique watermarks, making tracking them easy. The risk of detection isn’t worth it.”
Another user added, “While obtaining a DCP is possible, it’s also very complicated, highly traceable, and carries a significant risk, which discourages many. This particular version seems more like a WEB-DL from a preview stream than a direct DCP.”
“I’ve seen suggestions that it could be an internal preview or that someone analyzed frames and suspects it originated from a private streaming platform,” suggested another user. “Hence, we might be looking at a Theater WEB-DL.”
In any case, the situation doesn’t bode well for keeping the recently unveiled film under wraps. As Mubi’s most successful film to date, “The Substance”still has a lot of potential ahead.
Digital Release Date for The Substance
As of now, Mubi has not confirmed a digital release date for The Substance, but indications suggest it might be available on digital platforms by the end of October.
While digital and streaming information remains unverified, the recent leaks could prompt Mubi to make it available online sooner rather than later. Additionally, releasing a horror movie ahead of Halloween could be a strategic choice.
When it comes to streaming, “The Substance”is likely to premiere on Mubi’s platform.
