Choso’s passing in Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly one of the most poignant moments in the manga. However, there is a hidden detail that adds an even more heart-wrenching aspect to his death.
Despite its reputation for being ruthless towards its characters, Jujutsu Kaisen has continued to shock its audience by killing off several major players throughout the story. Choso, a relatively recent addition, met his demise at the hands of Sukuna during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
As a beloved character among fans, Choso’s death in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259 was a heartbreaking moment, particularly due to the circumstances of his passing. He sacrificed himself to shield his younger brother Yuji from Sukuna’s Kamino, leaving fans deeply saddened.
As Choso lay on his deathbed, he shared a final moment with Yuji in an imaginary world. Seated across from each other at a long table, it reminded Choso of the time he had fabricated a memory of Yuji after their battle in Shibuya.
However, unlike before, both Eso and Kechizu were absent from the table. The recent interaction between Choso and Yuji was filled with tenderness and warmth, as Choso commended the sorcerer for surpassing him and Yuji expressed gratitude to Choso for staying by his side during a time of solitude.
The scene is inherently quite painful.
In the panel, Choso and Yuji sit facing each other. Yuji can be seen gripping the table tightly, which is a reference to Choso’s fabricated memory where they were in a similar position. However, in that scenario, it was Choso who was holding onto the table.
Despite its small size, this detail speaks volumes about the relationship between Yuji and Choso. When Choso had the memory, it was a reminder of their strong bond while Yuji was unaware. However, when Choso passed away, Yuji had already formed a strong connection with the Death Painting and this time, it was he who refused to let go of Choso.
This delicate portrayal of their bond is both exquisite and moving, showcasing Gege Akutami’s storytelling prowess. It has left fans devastated by the heartbreaking loss of the beloved character in the manga.
A Reddit user expressed their sadness and disappointment for Choso’s character in the manga, noting his stoic demeanor and peaceful appearance in a false memory. They believed he deserved a better outcome.
“Please allow me to grieve in peace. I was trying to heal from his passing, so please respect our privacy and refrain from sharing anything,”expressed another user while mourning the loss of Choso.
A third fan seized the chance to commend the Jujutsu Kaisen author, stating, “Gege’s writing is phenomenal when he puts his mind to it, I guarantee.”
Despite the grief surrounding Choso’s death, there is speculation that another character may be making a comeback. In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 260, there were hints that Satoru Gojo, who had previously died in the arc, may be returning. The truth of this rumor will be revealed in the upcoming Chapter 261.
