The Journey of Bruno Luciano Giovanni Bruni: From Taekwondo Enthusiast to Korean TV Star
Today, it is common to see foreigners on Korean television, but the early 2000s painted a different picture. A notable figure of this transformation is Bruno Luciano Giovanni Bruni, a German Taekwondo enthusiast whose journey to stardom began unexpectedly in 1999.
Born in Italy in 1978 and raised in Germany, Bruno first arrived in Korea in 1995 for a month-long Taekwondo training program. His passion for martial arts became evident, leading him to stay for a longer duration and enroll at Ewha Womans University in 1997 to study international economics.
A Unique Milestone in Taekwondo
Bruno achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first foreigner on Korea’s national Taekwondo demonstration team, which garnered him some initial recognition. However, his rise to fame truly began with a serendipitous appearance on a variety show in late 1999. His captivating presence, commendable fluency in Korean, and sincere passion for both Taekwondo and Korean culture earned him the affectionate moniker “Taekwondo Boy.” This newfound fame propelled him into a whirlwind of variety shows, commercials, and acting roles.
Challenges and Deportation
Despite his soaring popularity, Bruno faced a setback in 2002 when he was deported from Korea due to visa complications. Unbeknownst to him, his entertainment engagements had violated immigration laws after his work visa expired. Reflecting on this experience, Bruno expressed his regrets about not navigating the legal intricacies properly. Upon returning to Germany, he found himself the focus of local media, who dubbed him “The German Boy Who Became Famous in Korea.”
Rebuilding and Resilience
After resolving his visa issues, Bruno made a brief return to Korea, but circumstances led him to leave once again, remaining away for nearly 16 years. In 2019, he opened up about the emotional turmoil that contributed to this prolonged absence, revealing betrayals from his agency and industry acquaintances. Many of his contracts, written in Korean, had been fraudulent, leaving him disillusioned.
Even as he grappled with these setbacks, Bruno continued his acting pursuits in Germany and attempted to break into Hollywood, landing roles in series like “Lost” and “Criminal Minds.” However, his dreams of a successful Hollywood career did not materialize as he had hoped, forcing him to take a part-time job at a Japanese restaurant, where he often felt embarrassed when recognized by Korean customers.
Eventually, Bruno returned to Germany and successfully opened a Korean fusion restaurant in Berlin, featuring dishes such as bibimbap and kimchi burgers.
A Triumphant Return to Korea
Even after years of separation, Bruno’s love for Korea never faded. In 2019, he made a much-anticipated return through a variety show, much to the joy of his fans. With a youthful appearance and improved language skills, Bruno is now carving out a new chapter in his career, balancing acting and variety show appearances. His journey symbolizes resilience and hope, and fans eagerly anticipate this new phase for the beloved “Taekwondo Boy.”
