According to Good Housekeeping, the drink in question was first introduced in 2022 by Daryl Gioffre, a certified chiropractor who has since become a nutrition advisor to numerous celebrities, including Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.

Despite Gioffre potentially being the first to use the term ‘internal shower’, chia seeds have been a well-established ingredient for a considerable amount of time and are a common addition to the smoothies and acai bowls of wellness enthusiasts.

According to TikTok users, this beverage has the incredible ability to eliminate bloating, relieve constipation, and help achieve a flat stomach.

Despite the hype surrounding these claims, many individuals are sharing their experiences with ‘tadpole water’ and describing its unappealing texture and taste. However, they also attest to its effectiveness.

Tadpole water is the latest TikTok trend.

  1. Add 2 tbsp of chia seeds to a full glass of water, at least 8oz if not 16oz
  2. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice to taste; up to 1 whole lemon
  3. Optionally add 1/8 tsp of sea salt
  4. Stir and let chia seeds absorb water; after up to 15 minutes, stir once more and drink.

According to the internet, that is all there is to it and unfortunately, it doesn’t taste very good.

According to TikTok users, the combination of chia seeds and lemon in water is effective. Adding a small amount of salt can provide electrolytes and potentially reduce cellulite. This advice is backed by personal experience.

Nonetheless, there were individuals who expressed hesitation towards the consistency of tadpole water, as its name accurately reflects its texture. They proposed replacing it with chia seed shots.

Some were making jokes, inquiring about the possibility of adding chia seeds to their Diet Coke.

Does tadpole water actually work?

According to TikTok, individuals who consume this beverage daily for two weeks often experience a detox-like sensation in their stomachs. However, the reason for this feeling is due to increased bowel movements rather than any actual detoxification.

Additionally, consuming this drink will result in a greater sense of fullness compared to a standard glass of water, potentially leading to a calorie deficit if you decide to forgo breakfast.

According to Amy Fischer, MS, RD, CDN, a registered dietitian, chia seeds are a rich source of fiber, which can gradually decrease LDL cholesterol levels and maintain stable blood sugar levels. In addition, they promote digestive health, nourish beneficial gut bacteria, and may assist with weight management. Fischer also notes that chia seeds are a valuable source of heart-healthy omega-3 fats, protein, and various antioxidants and minerals.

Health experts typically praise the advantages of chia seeds, however, consistently consuming a high amount of fiber over a prolonged period may be overwhelming for your body, especially if you are not accustomed to a high-fiber diet.

According to Houston dietician Amanda Beaver, chia seeds are high in fiber and it is recommended to gradually increase your fiber intake. Adding too much chia seeds to your diet too quickly can lead to gastrointestinal problems like bloating, gas, and constipation.

If you are still yearning for a taste of tangy water that resembles pond water, be sure to conduct thorough research. As with any popular food trend, it is crucial to pay attention to your body and practice moderation.
