The Witcher 4 Developers Respond to Backlash Over Ciri as Main Character

The controversy surrounding Ciri’s role in The Witcher 4 has captured the attention of fans, especially following her reveal as the main protagonist during the 2024 Game Awards. With a new voice actor stepping in, the unveiling of the game’s first trailer has ignited heated discussions among the gaming community.

It’s been over a decade since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt debuted, leading to heightened anticipation and excitement regarding new developments in the beloved franchise. Yet the announcement of Ciri as the lead hasn’t been met with universal praise; rather, it has provoked a significant backlash online, including some troubling sexist comments related to Ciri’s new design.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, game director Sebastian Kalemba and narrative director Philipp Weber took time to respond to the criticism aimed at CD Projekt Red regarding Ciri’s role in The Witcher 4.

Weber expressed understanding of the fans’ concerns, acknowledging that many criticisms stem from a place of passion. He emphasized that the development team shares these concerns and is committed to respecting the established lore and canon articulated by author Andrzej Sapkowski.

“We are not inventing elements arbitrarily,” Weber clarified. “We take our responsibility toward the source material very seriously.” He concluded by reassuring fans that the best way to address their worries is through the game itself: “We hope to demonstrate our commitment through the quality and care we put into the project. Ultimately, actions speak louder than words.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the fanbase of The Witcher has expanded significantly in recent years, bolstered by the popularity of both The Witcher 3 and its successful Netflix adaptation. The latter, featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, is transitioning into its fourth season, where Liam Hemsworth will take over the role.

While facing criticism, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 will retain beloved features from previous installments, including the popular card game Gwent. Additionally, Geralt is set to appear in some form, ensuring a connection with fans of the earlier games.
