There’s now an official Barbie phone & it’s intoxicatingly pink

HMD, the maker of Nokia phones, has joined forces with Mattel to launch an official Barbie phone that features a nostalgic pink design and ditches apps.

It has been more than a year since the theatrical release of the Barbie movie. The movie earned a box office total of over $1.4 billion.

The brand is now venturing into the world of technology by releasing an official Barbie-themed flip phone.

The soon-to-be-released phone is a collaboration between Mattel and Human Mobile Devices (HMD). The two corporations joined forces to create a vintage-inspired device that aims to inject a sense of nostalgia and luxury into the present-day mobile industry.

The charmingly adorable pink device lacks the advanced features of top-of-the-line Android phones. Instead, it is limited to making phone calls and sending texts, similar to the classic flip phones that served as its inspiration.

According to Lars Silberbauer, Global Chief Marketing Officer at HMD, the new phone release is designed for those seeking a break from the constant digital noise. The phone, featuring the iconic Barbie, comes in a classic pink color and includes two additional cases – one with a playful heart design and the other with colorful swirls inspired by the Total Hair Barbie from the 90s. This phone is the perfect blend of nostalgia and a fun, carefree attitude.

Among the package’s contents is a phone strap adorned with charming Barbie-colored trinkets, such as a roller skate, ice cream, and a collection of stickers for personalizing them.

In addition to all the other Barbie features, the phone also plays an energetic “Hi Barbie”sound every time it is turned on.

Barbie Y2K

The compact phone is also capable of taking selfies, although it does not have a front-facing camera. Instead, it offers a 5MP rear-facing camera with flash, allowing you to capture “authentic Y2K style images.”

Although there are no social media apps available, instead of wasting time scrolling on X/Twitter, the phone features a Barbie-themed user interface with various wallpapers and icons.

The nostalgic classic mobile game Snake has made a comeback as “Malibu Snake”, reminiscent of the days when it was played on the Nokia 3310.

The HMD Barbie Phone, perfect for fans of retro and adorable tech, as well as Barbie enthusiasts, will be available for pre-order on September 23 on the HMD website.

The vibrant pink flip phone is currently only available for customers in the US and is compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon wireless networks. The exciting part is that it is priced at just $129, which is even more affordable than a Barbie Dreamhouse. But keep in mind, it is not meant to replace your iPhone.
