These 5 Foods Are Surprisingly Banned From The Met Gala

The happenings at The Met Gala are known to be secretive, but the menu for this year’s attendees has been revealed and it notably lacks 5 specific ingredients.

The annual Met Gala is known for its iconic red carpet looks that dominate social media feeds. Unless you’ve been completely out of touch, you’ve likely seen the abundance of natural and floral themed outfits worn by Hollywood’s A-listers at this year’s event.

The 2024 Met Gala was centered around the theme of ‘Garden of Time’, resulting in a menu that showcased a variety of botanical and floral dishes.

The secrecy surrounding The Met Gala adds to its appeal, as the public is not privy to the guest list or menu until after the event. However, this year’s menu was just as opulent as anticipated.

Despite the event’s flower theme, the serving of flowering vegetables in the ‘alliums’ category is prohibited. Alliums, which include root vegetables like onion, leeks, garlic, chives, and shallots, are considered flavorful ingredients but are not permitted at the event.

According to Olivier Cheng, the caterer for the Met Gala, the guests were treated to a starter of spring vegetable salad topped with elderflower foam, raspberry vinaigrette, and olive crumble that was designed to look like soil. The dish also featured butterfly-shaped croutons, with over 270 nature-inspired pieces in total.

Following that, the stars were served a main course consisting of filet of beef with a tortellini rose on top. Cheng’s intention was for it to resemble a culinary castle, as he explains, “We are placing the beef on a ‘moat’ of pine needles and mushrooms.”This floral touch pays homage to the exhibit, showcasing more than 270 nature-inspired artworks.

What is the reason for banning these foods from The Met Gala?

Anna Wintour approves the menu.

Anna Wintour, the reigning monarch of the Met Gala, revealed on The Today Show that she has a dislike for alliums and has therefore chosen not to include them in the menu for the upcoming event. She confirmed this during an interview with Jenna Bush Hager, stating, “Those are things I’m not particularly fond of, and so yes, that’s true.”

It is logical to consider that onion breath is not very fashionable. Furthermore, these types of foods have been proven to have negative effects on digestion, as experts have noted. Therefore, if you want your luxurious event, which costs $75,000 per ticket, to have a pleasant aroma like that of a rose garden, it would be wise to avoid these pungent vegetables.
