THQ / WWE

The fifth installment in the WWE SmackDown! series, WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain, offered numerous exciting additions. These included an enhanced grappling system, a revamped rivalry system in the immersive Season Mode, the introduction of the Elimination Chamber match type, and various other features.

What we appreciate about it: Here Comes the Pain was the final installment in the WWE Smackdown! series before it was renamed WWE Smackdown! Vs. Raw. It was a game that quietly revolutionized the franchise, providing players with endless replay value through a multitude of choices, diverse storylines, and an improved rivalry system. One of its greatest strengths was its extensive roster, which included numerous WWE legends at the time.

99. DOOM (2016)

doom 2016 demon
Bethesda Softworks

Synopsis: In a distant future, demonic forces have taken control of a research facility on Mars operated by the Union Aerospace Corporation. With the fate of Earth at stake, scientists revive a solitary Marine in a desperate attempt to defeat the hellish invaders and prevent the impending apocalypse.

We are fond of Doom 2016 for its homage to the original Doom game. It embraces and improves upon its predecessor, making it the most fast-paced and chaotic installment in the series (until the release of Doom Eternal, that is). With its intense gameplay, exaggerated finishing moves, and iconic heavy metal soundtrack, there are many reasons to appreciate Doom 2016. Admittedly, the reboot lacks a gripping storyline, but for those who prioritize gameplay, this won’t be a major issue.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

Play as Kassandra or Alexios and travel through Ancient Greece to uncover the secrets of a horrific cult.
UBISOFT

About the game: Taking place in Ancient Greece, the game centers on the elder of two siblings (Alexios or Kassandra) who is known as the Eagle Bearer, a renowned mercenary. After being exiled from Sparta for attempting to rescue their younger sibling from death, the player must work towards reuniting their family. Along the way, they will unravel the mysteries surrounding a mysterious cult and the ongoing war between Athens and Sparta.

Why we admire it: Odyssey is undoubtedly among the top Assassin’s Creed games. Set in an intriguing time in the past, it provides a vast open world filled with missions to accomplish, famous historical figures to encounter, numerous hidden treasures to discover, and countless epic battles on land and water. Unlike its forerunners, Odyssey places greater emphasis on combat, offering a remarkable skill tree that unlocks exciting and unique abilities to assist you on your quest.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic key art
BioWare

About: The story revolves around the threat of Darth Malak, who plans to unleash a Sith armada on the Galactic Republic. As a Jedi Knight, it is your responsibility to stop him and save the day. However, the path you choose to achieve this goal is entirely up to you. Will you stay true to the light or succumb to the temptations of the Dark Side?

What we appreciate about it: KOTOR may not have aged well in terms of graphics and gameplay, but its storytelling still surpasses many RPGs. Without a doubt, KOTOR stands out as one of the most well-written games of all time, and its unexpected twist continues to be a topic of discussion. However, perhaps the most significant impact of the game is the introduction of Darth Revan, a revered Sith Lord who continues to be a prominent figure even 20 years later. It’s no surprise that Disney chose to keep him as a canon character.

96. EarthBound (1995)

Earthbound in-game screenshot
HAL Labratory

Earthbound is technically a sequel to the first Mother game. In this game, players take on the role of Ness as he embarks on a journey through the country of Eagleland. Along the way, he must confront and defeat Giygas, an alien force that has taken over Earth and transformed animals, humans, and bugs into hostile beings.

What makes Earthbound so beloved: The pioneer of JRPGs, Earthbound showed that a game could be truly outstanding with just charm, humor, and a childlike sense of wonder. However, it is the exceptional writing that truly sets Earthbound apart, immersing players in the imaginative world of young children.

The Evolution of Need For Speed: Underground 2 (2004)

EA

Picking up where the first game left off, Need For Speed: Underground 2 is all about street racing!

Why we appreciate it: Need for Speed: Underground 2 brought a much-needed sense of style to the Need for Speed series, shaking things up for fans. Despite the success of previous titles like Hot Pursuit and Porsche Unleashed, Underground 2 marked a significant change for the franchise.

The release of Underground 2 marked a significant milestone for the NFS series as it introduced an open world, new race modes, and a memorable soundtrack that allowed players to race to the beats without paying much attention to the story. Although NFS: Most Wanted received the highest reviews, it was Underground 2 that established the benchmark for all upcoming games in the franchise.

Exploring in Firewatch
Holy Field

Explore the beautiful wilderness with Firewatch.

About the game: In Firewatch, players take on the role of Harry, a fire lookout at Shoshone National Forest, who discovers a sinister secret within the National Park. It is an adventure game.

Why we appreciate it: Firewatch is a unique narrative that can only be fully experienced through the interactive medium of gaming. Rather than relying on high-octane action, the game focuses on exploration and dialogue, creating a captivating atmosphere through its visuals and dialogue. While this may seem mundane at first glance, it ultimately adds to the game’s mysterious and unsettling tone, compelling players to delve deeper into the story and uncover the truth. While Firewatch may not appeal to everyone, those who invest the time will be rewarded with a lasting impression that will stay with them indefinitely.

What we appreciate about it: Although Mortal Kombat 11 has faced criticism for its use of microtransactions and excessive grind, it still manages to be a highly enjoyable game due to its exceptional gameplay and intricate fighting mechanics. Additionally, the inclusion of unexpected guest characters, such as Rambo, adds a unique twist to the traditional Earth Realm tournament, and the game’s graphic violence only adds to its appeal. Overall, there are plenty of reasons to love Mortal Kombat 11.

What we appreciate about it: Sonic 2 was the pinnacle of the Sonic franchise on the Sega Genesis. In terms of mechanics, the sequel surpassed its predecessor in every possible aspect. It boasted improved graphics, more well-crafted levels, and significantly enhanced gameplay. Even after twenty years, Sonic 2 remains one of the most beloved games in the series. 91. Dead Space (2008)

Dead Space cinematic
Electronic Arts

Topic: The USG Ishimura is facing a crisis and Isaac Clarke has been tasked with investigating the situation. As he delves deeper into the troubled spacecraft, he uncovers unimaginable horrors in the form of Necromorphs. In this intense horror game, players must not only discover the fate of the ship’s inhabitants, but also fight to eradicate the terrifying infection that has taken over.

Reason for our admiration: Dead Space follows the principle of “show don’t tell”in its storytelling. The game minimizes the use of UI elements and avoids excessive exposition, allowing players to discover the horrors lurking on the Ishimura on their own. This unique approach to the survival horror genre makes for a terrifying experience that will keep you on edge, even after multiple playthroughs. As you progress, you’ll come across various weapons and upgrades to enhance your gameplay, making it a game that you’ll constantly want to improve in. Despite this, the Necromorphs remain just as unsettling throughout the entire game.

gamescom best games phantasy star online
Sega

Sega’s innovative MMO follows players who assume the role of a HUNTER assigned to investigate the unusual actions of Ragol’s creatures and the location of their leader’s daughter, Red Ring Rico.

What we appreciate about it: Phantasy Star Online was a trailblazer in its genre and the initial console release of an MMO, opening the doors for a wider audience to experience massively multiplayer games.

Despite keeping the elements of a classic RPG, such as instanced environments and lack of an open world, Sega’s focus on effortless accessibility and incorporation of arcade-like features set it apart from its peers. Furthermore, the game’s emphasis on collecting valuable loot added a distinctive aspect to its character progression.

Despite its age and innovative design, the Dreamcast game remains relevant today thanks to numerous private servers run by fans. These servers not only continue to provide new content, but also have thriving, devoted communities.

89. Animal Crossing: Wild World (2005)

Characters from Animal Crossing Wild World

Summary: This social simulation game allows players to move into a village filled with friendly anthropomorphic animals. Once settled, players have the freedom to engage in various activities such as bug catching, house decorating, befriending villagers, and connecting with real-life friends through Wi-Fi.

What we appreciate about it: While New Horizons’ timely release may have contributed to its success, Wild World can arguably be credited for shaping what Animal Crossing is known for today.

Moreover, the Nintendo DS not only enhanced the original title’s gameplay but also provided the perfect platform for the series to expand with its portable design and Wi-Fi features. Wild World marked the first Animal Crossing game to utilize online connectivity, enabling players to visit each other’s villages.

Despite only making incremental changes to the gameplay loop, Animal Crossing: Wild World played a crucial role in the success of its successors. Without Wild World’s perfected core formula, the leaps made by its successors would not have been possible.

Nintendo

Synopsis: Join a paper version of Mario as he embarks on a quest to save the kingdom and unravel the mysteries of the Thousand-Year Door. Along the journey, he will navigate through Rogueport and gather a team of interesting companions.

What makes it great: Paper Mario TTYD is not only considered the best Mario RPG, but it is also highly regarded as one of the best Mario games ever made. While I personally enjoy RPGs, this genre is often associated with fantasy, emotional depth, and weighty themes throughout hours of gameplay.

TTYD provides a condensed variation of these grand adventures, featuring ample exploration and a touch of Mario’s signature charm through its superb platforming and engaging battles. The real-time and reaction-based combat mechanics are flawlessly executed, making even the most minor encounters exhilarating.

The story and characters continue to contribute greatly, and fans still hold a deep affection for the vibrant and memorable cast even after several decades. Let’s make Rawk Hawk a part of Smash, everyone!

Lilith in Diablo IV
Blizzard

Synopsis: The fourth installment of the popular Diablo series follows the aftermath of the previous Prime Evil attack on the world of Sanctuary. As humanity’s demonic mother, Lilith, resurfaces to reclaim her offspring, the inhabitants of Sanctuary must band together to face this new threat.

The reason we are drawn to it is that Diablo 4 incorporates the most beloved aspects of both Diablo 2 and 3, resulting in a fresh and inclusive experience for its fanbase. The game effectively embraces the live service elements that its predecessors experimented with, ultimately presenting a modern take on the timeless hack-and-slash concept that has captivated players for more than two decades. An added bonus is that the game plans to release a new expansion pack every year, as opposed to just one. Additionally, its seasonal content continues to improve and impress.

Namco

About: This sequel follows a group of heroes as they battle to claim the holy blade, Soul Calibur, before the tyrannical Nightmare can wield the evil Soul Edge. Reasons for liking it: Some may describe the Soulcalibur franchise as Tekken with swords, but it offers much more than that. The combat is smooth and fluid, the character roster is filled with diverse and captivating fighters, and the GameCube version even allows players to control Link. Without a doubt, Soulcalibur 2 sets the standard for all fighting games to strive for.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (2019)

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim
Vanillaware

About: A Vanillaware Sci-Fi title that combines real-time strategy battles with side-scrolling adventures.

What makes it stand out: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a one-of-a-kind game that combines strategic combat and a captivating storyline. Revealing too much about the plot would spoil the game for those who haven’t tried it yet, but essentially, players take on the roles of 13 interconnected high school students.

The game’s stunning watercolor-like art style is showcased in side-scrolling segments, where players experience the non-linear narrative. In between story moments, students must pilot mighty mechs to protect humanity from hostile Kaiju invaders. 13 Sentinels stands apart from other games, thanks to its exceptional character development and storytelling, making it a must-try experience for all.

Best Games PUBG
Krafton

Synopsis: PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) is a multiplayer battle royale game where players are dropped into a constantly shrinking playing field, forced to search for weapons and equipment, and fight until only one person or team is left standing.

We appreciate PUBG for setting the standard for Battle Royale gameplay, surpassing even the popular game Fortnite. What sets PUBG apart is its unique incorporation of guns from the Call of Duty franchise and the ability to attach different accessories in-game, elevating each weapon into a powerful weapon of choice.

Despite the waning popularity of PUBG, it will forever hold a special place as the initial Battle Royale encounter for numerous gamers. Its success opened the doors for a plethora of similar games such as Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Call of Duty Warzone, which have played a significant role in shaping the genre’s evolution.

Tomb Raider (1996)

Synopsis: Lara Croft, a British archaeologist-adventurer, embarks on a journey to explore various ancient ruins around the world in pursuit of a valuable artifact in this third-person platformer.

Despite the passing of time, Lara Croft’s iconic design, featuring her signature braided hair, dual pistols, and turquoise leotard, remains beloved and owes much of its popularity to the enduring success of the Tomb Raider franchise.

Tomb Raider, one of the earliest examples of 3D platforming, utilized a grid-based movement system and realistic controls to create a structured and challenging sense of traversal. The game’s mechanics, which measured Lara’s climbing, running, and jumping in squares, required players to carefully calculate their button presses in order to successfully navigate through each room. This made it a prime example of an adventure game that truly tested one’s problem-solving skills. Written by Olly Smith.

DOOM Eternal (2020)

The continuous puzzle-solving and thrilling combat encounters throughout the world in Metroid Prime create an unforgettable experience, even for those who did not play the original games.

79. Age of Empires 2 (1999)

Age of Empires II soldiers attacking town
Xbox

Synopsis: Age of Empires 2 is a real-time strategy game that takes place during the Middle Ages. As a player, you are tasked with resource management, town building, and defeating your opponents in battle.

Reasons we enjoy it: The late ’90s marked a remarkable period for PC strategies. While Civilization was dominating the turn-based genre, Age of Empires was also making its mark in the real-time strategy scene. The third installment by Ensemble Studios was a significant improvement, introducing a plethora of changes and new features that were deemed impossible by the community at the time.

Despite its age, AoE II’s greatest strength lies in its versatility in both single-player and multiplayer modes. With five diverse campaigns to choose from, each offering a unique experience, and reliable and impressive multiplayer support, the game has stood the test of time and remains a popular choice almost a quarter of a century after its original release. The remastered version only enhanced this success, solidifying AoE II’s position as a thriving game.

77. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (2010)

Ubisoft

About the plot: Taking place in 16th century Rome, the story follows Ezio, who has become a skilled Assassin. He embarks on a mission to confront the Templars and restore the Assassin Brotherhood in Italy while freeing the city from their oppressive rule.

What makes it stand out: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood sets itself apart from other AC games. While it still features staple elements such as hidden blades, oversized hoods, and parkour, it also introduces the ability to recruit allies, revolutionizing the familiar franchise for many players.

It is understandable why anyone would want to save countless innocent civilians and transform them into lethal Assassins, ultimately aiding in the downfall of the ruling faction in Italy. This feature was crucial upon its release and remains impactful even after 14 years, as we can still witness a group of newly initiated Assassins traversing Italy on their mounts. Its success is evident in its continued use throughout games like Black Flag, Odyssey, and others.

Spec Ops: The Line (2012)

spec ops the line walker
2K Games

About the game: Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person shooter with tactical gameplay. It centers around Captain Martin Walker, who leads his Delta Force team on a rescue mission in the war-torn and sandstorm-ravaged city of Dubai. As they delve deeper into the capital city, the true nature of the conflict is revealed and challenges the perception of Walker and his team.

Why we appreciate it: The most thought-provoking installment in the Spec Ops series, this game follows the same themes as Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, but presents them in a unique way only possible in video games. While portraying Walker as the hero, Spec Ops challenges the player’s perception and forces them to question his morality and sanity. Unfortunately, the gameplay falls short and the combat and movement mechanics feel outdated even for 2012. However, the ambitious story, well-developed characters, and player-centric choice make up for the shortcomings in gameplay.

Return of the Obra Dinn (2018)

Return of the Obra Dinn game play screenshot
Lucas Pope

In Return of the Obra Dinn, we take on the role of the Chief Inspector for the East India Company. Our task is to delve into the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of the Obra Dinn. Armed with our stopwatch, the Momento Mortem, we are able to travel back in time to a specific moment and piece together the events that occurred during the ship’s voyage.

Why we find it intriguing: Who would have thought that filling out documents could be a captivating gameplay mechanic? But in the hands of Lucas Pope, it becomes a powerful storytelling tool that keeps players on the edge of their seats. Despite its seemingly mismatched elements – from its simplistic 1-bit graphics to its complex maritime mystery plot – and its repetitive gameplay of revisiting a single moment in time to collect details for documentation, the game manages to come together beautifully. With a gripping storyline, addictive gameplay, and charming visuals, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience and a true masterpiece by Pope.

Street Fighter 4 (2008)

Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter 4
Capcom

We appreciate Street Fighter 4 for its significant contributions to the franchise. While it may be controversial to rank it above Street Fighter 2, this game has propelled the series into the modern era. With the return of beloved characters and the introduction of 3D models while maintaining the classic 2D gameplay, Street Fighter 4 revitalized the entire franchise and prevented it from fading into obscurity. Although there may be technically superior games within the series, it is undeniable that Street Fighter 4 is the reason why the series continues to thrive.

73. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)

Castlevania project zircon
Konami

Several years after Richter Belmont’s triumph over Dracula, a new threat looms as Dracula’s castle resurfaces and Alucard comes across a seemingly changed Richter.

What we appreciate: It’s remarkable when you can identify the origin of a genre, and although there are a few games that fall under the category of ‘Metroidvania’ prior to this one, the incorporation of RPG elements and expansive gothic castle in this game serve as the focal point for many others of its kind.

Throughout the decades, numerous individuals have attempted to imitate, yet only a handful have managed to come close. These are the words of Nathan Ellingsworth.

Intelligent Systems

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical RPG that takes place on the continent of Fódlan, where three nations are united by the Garreg Mach Monastery. As Byleth, a former mercenary and now a teacher at the monastery, you are responsible for guiding your students through battles.

What we appreciate about it: Fire Emblem: Three Houses raised the bar for the series. The game provides limitless replay value, and despite its large roster of characters, each one is well-developed and distinct. In all honesty, Three Houses is possibly one of the top turn-based strategy games due to its captivating gameplay on and off the numerous battle maps. It’s also an excellent entry point for those interested in the Fire Emblem series, leaving players eager to explore the franchise’s many installments.

Counter-Strike: Source (2004)

Counter-Strike: Source
Valve

About the game: Counter-Strike: Source is a first-person shooter game created and published by Valve as a modernized version of the original Counter-Strike, utilizing the Source game engine.

What we appreciate about it: Source builds upon the established foundation of Counter-Strike and 1.6, striving to strike a perfect balance between strategic gameplay and adrenaline-fueled action. This is achieved through meticulously crafted maps and well-designed gun mechanics.

The first version of the game caused division among the CS community, with some preferring the original 1.6 and others embracing its successor. However, Source introduced numerous updates and additions that have now become essential elements of the game series. These improvements include a more efficient net code for smoother gameplay, a complete overhaul of the game engine, and a redesigned user interface with customizable options. As a result, Counter-Strike: Source is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made.

What we appreciate about it: Pirate games have been a staple in the world of video games since their inception. While some, like Skull and Bones, have not succeeded, others, such as Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, have excelled in their single-player design. However, it is Sea of Thieves that has truly perfected the multiplayer aspect of pirate games.

In Sea of Thieves, players can experience a flawless multiplayer PvP pirate adventure that caters to all types of players. The game offers thrilling PvP battles, exciting quests, and unforgettable adventures. Whether playing solo or with friends, players have the power to create their own epic story and are guaranteed to have a fun experience.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (2005)

Square Enix

About: Kingdom Hearts 2 brings back Sora, Goofy, and Donald who must work together to defeat the evil plans of Organization XIII.

What stands out to us: Kingdom Hearts 2 is a significant title in the history of JRPGs. When it first released on the PlayStation 2, Square Enix not only pushed the visual limits of the console, but also delivered a compelling and emotionally-charged storyline.

One of the standout qualities of Kingdom Hearts 2 is its main character’s strong sense of morality. Throughout the game, players were able to empathize with Sora’s determination to save and defend his friends, even as he faced unknown adversaries. This influence can still be seen in the majority of modern JRPGs, solidifying Kingdom Hearts 2’s position as the highest-rated title in the series.

Video Game: Yakuza 0 (2015)

Kiryu dancing in Yakuza 0
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio

Summary: Yakuza 0 is set during Japan’s economic bubble era and follows the story of two Tojo clan members, Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, in the seedy areas of Kamurocho and Sotenbori. Kiryu is fiercely loyal while Majima is comically unhinged and disgraced.

In the neon-soaked city streets, players will be required to uncover the secrets surrounding the vacant lot, a piece of land that is coveted by local Yakuza groups at any price.

What we appreciate about it: Yakuza 0 captures everything that makes Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s popular action series so enjoyable. It not only tells the origin tale of lead character Kazuma Kiryu, but also offers a touching glimpse into Goro Majima’s past – a key factor in his infamous nickname “The Mad Dog of Shimano”.

Despite appearing to be a straightforward mystery, the tale of the vacant plot is filled with unexpected turns that will keep you on edge. Along with the game’s intense hand-to-hand combat, a variety of entertaining mini-games, and a fantastic lineup of beloved characters, this is an adventure that you won’t soon forget.

Yakuza 0 was also crucial in boosting the series’ recognition in the Western market. Its success paved the way for other titles such as the exceptional Isshin spinoff and mainline releases featuring the newest protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga. Without it, these subsequent titles may not have been made available to us.

Nier: Automata (2017)

2B in Nier Automata
PlatinumGames

Synopsis: Nier: Automata is an expansive, 40+ hour adventure that chronicles the journey of a team of androids in a thought-provoking portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world. Revealing any further details would spoil the storyline. If you have yet to experience this game, it is highly recommended.

Why we appreciate it: Yoko Taro, a visionary director, has always had a keen eye for storytelling. However, the gameplay aspect of his previous projects often acted as a barrier for many who were not willing to venture through.

Despite initial challenges, Taro was able to achieve his storytelling goals and create an exceptional narrative experience with the help of renowned developer Platinum Games. Together, they crafted a dynamic gameplay experience that constantly surprises players for hours on end.

One of the unique aspects of Nier: Automata is that it conceals a majority of its story behind starting a “New Game”, and personally, I wouldn’t want it any different.

Ico (2001)

ico best ps2 games
Japan Studio

What is the premise of the game? The game follows a horned boy on an adventure to rescue a princess who is being held captive in a fortified fortress.

One of the reasons why we appreciate it is because Ico stood out by deviating from the conventions of its genre. Under the direction of Fumito Ueda, the game followed a “subtracting design”approach where unnecessary elements were removed to maintain the intended experience.

This resulted in a game with no HUD, minimal combat, and an emphasis on the bond between the player character and Yorda, the princess. The main objective is to escape from the fortress and keep Yorda safe, creating a focused adventure without any unnecessary elements. As the credits roll, players are left with an unforgettable experience.

Rockstar Games

The Epsilon Program was first introduced in GTA San Andreas

Summary: GTA: San Andreas is the third installment in the GTA 3D universe, taking place in the city of Los Santos. The game centers around the main character, Carl Johnson (CJ), as he returns home after his mother’s death. However, he soon discovers that the city is plagued by corruption and gang warfare, and he must reclaim the streets to restore order.

What makes it a classic: Regardless of whether you enjoy playing video games or not, GTA: San Andreas is a game that has been experienced by almost everyone. Its gripping narrative and shocking plot twist leave a lasting impact. However, the defining feature of San Andreas, like all GTA games, is its expansive open world.

Despite the outdated graphics, the level of detail in San Andreas is impeccable. The game introduces a unique body mechanic that allows CJ’s weight to fluctuate in real-time, a feature that has not been seen in any other Rockstar game since. These elements are just some of the reasons why San Andreas continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many players. Words by Melvin Mathew.

The core cast of characters is expertly portrayed, making them some of the most memorable in any JRPG. By the end credits, you will have fallen in love with the town of Inaba. This game is a masterpiece of the genre and solidifies Person as one of the greatest of all time.

Description: A continuation of Gearbox’s Borderlands, this action-packed looter shooter is set 5 years after the first game. It follows players as they journey through the planet of Pandora in order to defeat the oppressive Handsome Jack.

What we love about it: Borderlands 2 builds upon the success of the original game by enhancing every aspect to the max. From an abundance of loot to discover, to the introduction of new Vault Hunters, and the captivating world of Pandora to discover, there’s even more to enjoy.

Despite being the primary antagonist in the franchise, Handsome Jack stands out as one of the greatest video game characters of all time. His combination of narcissism and charm creates unforgettable interactions, ultimately contributing to the exceptional storytelling within the looter shooter genre.

61. History of Civilization 4 (2005)

A screenshot from Civilization 4
2K

The fourth installment of Civilization 4, a highly popular turn-based strategy game series, offers players the opportunity to construct their own powerful nation. Whether you choose to strive for peaceful relations, explore the depths of space, or conquer other nations, the decision is in your hands.

Why we love it: Civ 4 revolutionized the Civilization franchise and solidified its place among the top real-time strategy games. Its stunning 3D graphics, user-friendly interface, and enhanced AI (although Gandhi’s love for nuclear weapons remained a notable quirk) set a new standard for the series. The addition of religion as a gameplay element brought a refreshing twist to the game. However, while the gameplay is exceptional, what truly stands out in our memories are Leonard Nimoy’s iconic quotes about technological advancements, with my personal favorite being “beep…beep…beep-Sputnik!”

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)

Best Games Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater
Konami

Description: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a stealth-action game that takes place during the Cold War. Players assume the role of Naked Snake as he embarks on a mission to save a scientist and prevent a nuclear threat.

The reason we appreciate it: The legendary Metal Gear Solid franchise not only pioneered stealth gaming, but also perfected it. Although the initial two games are highly acclaimed, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is perhaps the pinnacle of the series.

The prequel of this game presented a revolutionary survival mechanism that added an unprecedented level of realism by requiring players to manage their food and medicine. The camouflage function was especially remarkable as it allowed players to seamlessly blend into their environment. And, of course, Cynthia Hall’s iconic “Snake Eater”moment during the endless ladder climb scene is unforgettable.

Furthermore, the boss battle against The End, which can span for hours and takes place in a sprawling forest setting, showcases Kojima’s creativity as he is able to seamlessly blend gaming and cinematic elements.

59. Resident Evil (2002 Remake)

Capcom

Synopsis: A skilled team of special forces members infiltrate a secluded mansion in order to uncover its inhabitants who have been transformed into zombies.

We are impressed by Capcom’s 2002 remake of Resident Evil, as it is rare for remakes to surpass their original counterparts. The game features a complete recreation of Spencer Mansion and its surroundings, allowing players to relive the S.T.A.R.S. team’s initial encounter with Umbrella’s evil schemes with just as much enjoyment as it provided 22 years ago.

Despite being an ambitious remake, it’s not surprising that Capcom hasn’t quite captured the magic that resides in Spencer’s zombie-infested home. After all, this survival horror title was instrumental in popularizing the genre and even though Capcom came close to one-upping themselves with their stellar remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, they still haven’t been able to fully replicate the original’s charm.

The cast of Gears of War 2
Epic Games

Synopsis: Serving as a continuation of Epic Games’ successful Xbox 360 title, Gears of War 2 follows Marcus and his team as they are tasked with once again fighting against the Locust menace deep underground. With intense sequences, such as being swallowed by a massive worm, and occasional tranquil character interactions, the game is an exhilarating ride that captivates the player.

Our reasons for liking it: Despite being viewed as the outcast of the series due to its unresolved ending that left some players disappointed, Gears 2 has only gotten better with time, much like a fine wine.

The third entry in the series features some of the most impressive setpieces, cementing its status as the best in the franchise. Witnessing Marcus’ harrowing battles only adds to the emotional impact, as these intense moments further connect you to the characters of GoW.

In addition, this game’s notable advancements in competitive multiplayer and co-op horde mode make it a crucial milestone for the series.

Despite its difficulty to acquire in today’s market, Gears of War 2 is definitely worth the effort, especially if you are able to gather some friends and play horde mode together.

Celeste (2018)

Madeline climbing a mountain in Celeste.
Maddy Makes Games

The focal point of this intense platformer centers on the powerful themes of self-acceptance and determination. Madeline’s journey revolves around overcoming not only a physical mountain, but also the mental challenge of anxiety within herself.

Why we admire it: Celeste has gained a devoted fan base in the precision platformer community – a legitimate community, mind you – for its stunning aesthetics and highly demanding gameplay.

The gameplay of Celeste is challenging and may be punishing for players who fail, but it remains unique in the subgenre by balancing this difficulty with emotional and inspirational storytelling. This contrast adds to the game’s overall appeal and prevents it from becoming too overwhelming for players.

Every level provides a fulfilling experience, both for the player and Madeline herself. It’s a challenging gaming experience that will push even the most experienced players, but it is definitely worth the effort and emotions.

Summary: Respawn successfully combined the best aspects of Titanfall and incorporated them into a Battle Royale format, resulting in the immense popularity of Apex Legends. While perfecting the BR formula is challenging, Apex Legends comes remarkably close to achieving it.

Despite being in a genre known for the failure of many live service games, Apex Legends has defied the odds and surpassed the unfortunate fate that befell most battle royale games released in the late 2010s and early 2020s.

The smooth gunplay, diverse cast of characters, frequent content updates, incredibly high skill ceiling, and thriving esports community all contribute to Apex earning a spot on this list. While numerous multiplayer games have emerged and faded since its release, few can match the thrill and satisfaction of dominating an entire lobby and earning numerous badges in Apex.

Despite encountering various problems, this game remains a top-notch example in its genre and deserves its place here.

Description: This game is an action-packed stealth adventure featuring Agent 47, renowned as the world’s top assassin. In this game, players will guide Agent 47 as he works to dismantle a secretive organization that holds immense power over global affairs.

The Hitman franchise has always impressed us with its action puzzle elements and diverse approaches to completing each stage. With World of Assassination, the series has reached its peak.

The unique appeal of Hitman lies in its subjectivity. Each person’s enjoyment of the game is based on their own preferences. The game presents you with a target and various options for taking them out, giving you complete control. This level of freedom is unmatched in any other video game, allowing for endless possibilities and the ability to replay the same stage countless times without repeating the same experience.

What makes it stand out: It’s not often that a new studio emerges and completely revolutionizes the gaming world. This is exactly what happened with Batman: Arkham Asylum, as Rocksteady Studios took one of the most beloved comic book characters and solidified its place as a cultural phenomenon.

Whether it was the ubiquitous Detective Mode or the innovative rhythm-based combat, Rocksteady’s game truly embodied the experience of being the Dark Knight.

Amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, Animal Crossing: New Horizons gained immense popularity as people utilized the game for virtual business meetings, connecting with loved ones, and finding solace during a difficult time. Annapurna Interactive

Synopsis: An inexperienced alien astronaut is faced with a dangerous time loop, tasked with deciphering the language of a lost civilization, and enduring numerous fatal physics-related events in order to uncover the secrets of their solar system.

What we appreciate about it: Outer Wilds can be both a blessing and a curse in the world of gaming. It leaves a lasting impression, yet its design makes it difficult to revisit. The game lacks traditional features such as power-ups, skill trees, and stat boosts. Instead, knowledge is your most valuable asset and tool. With each dive into the unknown, you uncover more pieces of the game’s intricate puzzles.

This game is perfect for individuals who have a passion for exploration, exceptional storytelling and well-developed characters, intricate and detailed worlds, and thought-provoking concepts that are beyond comprehension. About the game: Chrono Trigger is a beloved RPG that takes players on an epic journey through various eras, including the Middle Ages, Prehistoric era, and a post-apocalyptic future, in order to avert a catastrophic global calamity.

The game’s storyline unfolds when Crono, Marie, and Lucca find themselves unexpectedly transported to the year 600 AD. As they embark on a quest to defeat the malevolent sorcerer Magus and save the world, they are joined by other comrades from different time periods to prevent the powerful Lavos from being summoned.

What makes it stand out: In contrast to most JRPGs, Chrono Trigger breaks away from the norm of random encounters and instead, enemies are visible on the map during exploration. This unique feature was revolutionary for its time, as it was released in 1995 before the popular JRPG, Final Fantasy VII.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Square legends Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, the audio and visual elements of Chrono Trigger were nothing short of a masterpiece, most notably showcased through its exceptional soundtrack.

With its thrilling battle system and intricate storyline that offers various outcomes, Chrono Trigger stands as not only a stellar RPG, but also one of the greatest video games ever created.

With unexpected encounters such as a mysterious demon clown and a colossal, metal ghost chariot, this game keeps players on their toes with its unpredictable challenges.

Reason for our appreciation: DMC 3 successfully revived the series, which was in danger of being overshadowed by DMC 2. Serving as a necessary soft reboot, it presented Dante with his iconic, over-the-top, and devil-may-care persona that is still beloved today.

This game remains a must-play even today, thanks to its fast-paced and frenetic combat, incredible boss battles, clever level design, and pulsating soundtrack.

It successfully combined a thrilling campaign mode with an unforgettable multiplayer experience, making it the quintessential title in our minds. Riot Games

About the game: Despite its reputation for having a toxic player base, League of Legends offers a unique blend of strategy, mechanics, and teamwork that sets it apart as one of the top multiplayer games available. While it may not have originated the MOBA formula, it has certainly mastered it.

The reason we appreciate it: League of Legends has made significant contributions to the gaming world, from introducing a free-to-play format that transformed multiplayer games to establishing esports as a major industry. It has set the standards for several trends that shape the current video game scene.

Moreover, despite being over a decade old, LoL remains fresh and engaging thanks to its continuous stream of updates and patches.

The cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Overview: In 2018, Nintendo released its most extensive version of their flagship platform fighter, featuring every character from previous games and more. This version serves as the ultimate celebration of gaming as a whole.

Why we enjoy it: When it comes to crossover fighting games, there is none quite as wild as Smash Ultimate. Featuring a roster of more than 80 characters, such as Mario, Cloud, Solid Snake, Pikachu, Sora, Kazuya, and even Steve from Minecraft, Ultimate truly lives up to its tagline: everyone is present.

With its seamless gameplay and wide range of modes, stages, and match options, Ultimate is undeniably a top-tier party game. While it is easily accessible for casual play, it also offers enough complexity to satisfy competitive gamers.

What we love about it: Marvel’s Spider-Man flawlessly combines one of the most iconic Spider-Man tales with incredibly impressive gameplay, making it not just a fantastic Spider-Man game, but the ultimate one. What we appreciate about it: In addition to receiving high praise for its stunning Art Deco design, Ken Levine and 2K’s game, considered a successor to System Shock in terms of gameplay, achieved the unimaginable in the mid-2000s.

Encouraging the player to contemplate their tendency to blindly adhere to the rules set by a game remains a standout example of narrative subversion in the medium.

In addition to its famous plot twist, BioShock also posed thought-provoking questions. Did the player’s actions make them a monster for killing Little Sisters? Was Andrew Ryan truly the antagonist? Was it the player’s responsibility to determine the fate of Rapture? BioShock stands out as a first-person shooter that appeals to those who enjoy critical thinking, a unique characteristic in the gaming world.

The premise: In New Vegas, players assume the role of The Courier, who is ambushed by the nefarious Benny. However, Benny’s role is minor compared to the larger political conflict that unfolds. The player becomes entangled in a power struggle between the NCR, Caeser’s Legion, and Mr House, each competing for dominance in the Mojave Desert. The player’s choice to align with one of these factions will ultimately shape the fate of the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

What we appreciate about it: It is truly a miracle that a Triple-A game like Fallout: New Vegas was designed, written, and coded in just 18 months and was hailed as the best entry in its franchise. What sets it apart is its unique approach to the wasteland, deviating from the style of its predecessors and successors. The game offers morally complex writing that challenges personal beliefs, unapologetic gameplay, and a map filled with charming design elements that portray the harsh realities of the apocalypse.

Its graceful design and captivating soundtrack make it stand out in terms of environmental storytelling. Despite not using any spoken dialogue, this game manages to convey its story through innovative methods, evoking strong emotions from beginning to end, especially with its unexpected online element. About the game: Initially a 6v6, but now a 5v5, Overwatch is a hero-based arena shooter where players control super-powered heroes and compete in objective-based matches against other teams in intense multiplayer battles.

Despite its continued popularity, Overwatch as a franchise has often received negative criticism. This is likely due to the fact that its sequel did not meet expectations and was left unsupported for two years with minimal progress. As a result, it became an easy target for ridicule within the gaming community.

Despite all of this, Overwatch continues to maintain its popularity and its sequel is now on a more stable path. When it was first released in 2016, it was unlike any other game before it, with its unique feel, smooth gameplay, and competitive nature in the hero shooter genre. What is it about: CS:GO stands out as the most popular and highly regarded game in the CS series, being the first to incorporate an in-game economy system. It is also renowned for bringing together the CS 1.6 and CS Source communities.

What we appreciate about it: CS:GO came out during a time when the CS community was divided into two groups. One group favored CS 1.6, while the other group preferred CS Source. However, with the launch of CS:GO, which combined the best elements of both 1.6 and Source, the community gradually became united.

What we appreciate about it: Mario’s initial venture into three-dimensional worlds was truly impressive. At a time when it seemed unnecessary for Nintendo to stray from their tried-and-true formula, Mario 64 proved to be both stunning and groundbreaking.

Mario 64 continues to meet fans’ expectations for a game in the series and beyond, featuring flawless gameplay and a soundtrack that instantly takes a whole generation of players back to their childhoods in the mid to late 90s. Considered to be one of the PS2’s masterpieces, Shadow of the Colossus is a journey like no other.

Shadow of the Colossus centers around Wander’s quest to revive his deceased love by venturing to the Forbidden Land and defeating sixteen colossal creatures known as colossi.

Reasons for our admiration: Shadow of the Colossus is a lesser known game that often goes unnoticed due to its simplistic setting and straightforward plot. Its gradual pace and occasional frustrating controls may even deter some players, making the game more challenging. However, upon completion, players are rewarded with a touching narrative and a heartbreaking conclusion that takes them by surprise.

34. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

The game is centered around a man who receives a letter from his deceased wife and sets out to explore the abandoned town of Silent Hill, facing terrifying survival challenges along the way.

Our admiration for it: Silent Hill 2 is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional horror games ever created. Its gameplay and ambiance center on the concepts of guilt, trauma, and retribution. The game’s enemies are disturbingly designed, and the town’s portrayal is twisted, making it a prime example of seamlessly integrating themes with mechanics to convey its underlying message.

In 2001, the idea of incorporating psychological themes into a video game was still relatively novel. Most horror games at the time relied on violence and cheap scares, making Silent Hill 2 stand out among its peers.

Synopsis: V, a mercenary, is thrown into a perilous situation when a job goes awry, prompting a frantic race against the clock involving corporate agents, immortality, and the digital spirit of a former rock icon.

What we appreciate about it: The journey of Cyberpunk 2077 from its initial release to the Phantom Liberty expansion has been truly remarkable. The game’s launch in an unfinished state surprised many, but the significant improvements made by the time of the expansion’s release were beyond anyone’s expectations.

The RPG expertise of CD Projekt RED is once again displayed in its full glory, offering a never-ending supply of both dark and captivating tales to discover, powerful weapons to utilize, and options to personalize your V with chrome. Despite Night City’s ruthless nature and ability to drain the life out of anyone who dares to enter, its brilliance is too alluring to resist.

Toby Fox

Synopsis: A young child finds themselves in an underground kingdom inhabited by monsters. The player must decide whether to form alliances and show compassion towards the creatures or engage in brutal battles while trying to escape to the surface.

The reason for our appreciation: Many RPG players do not contemplate the morality of their actions. Encounter a Slime? Simply defeat it for the experience points and continue on. Who concerns themselves with a Slime when there is a whole world to rescue?

Undertale is a unique game that reflects the player’s actions and holds them accountable for their choices. It approaches the common occurrence of violence in RPG video games with unexpected gravity. The game has an impressive memory, never failing to acknowledge even the smallest act of murder.

This decision between non-violence and aggression results in vastly contrasting gameplay experiences, necessitating multiple playthroughs in order to fully delve into Undertale’s narrative. The brilliance of Undertale lies not in its commentary on unchanging characters in an imaginary realm, but in its revelation of the player’s true nature. While a game like Final Fantasy may condone the slaughter of goblins, Undertale imbues these creatures with individual lives and traits, exposing the player as the real monster if they choose to follow the typical role-playing game hero archetype.

Nintendo

Topic: The plot of this game centers around Mario’s return to outer space. In his second intergalactic adventure, Mario is tasked with traversing the cosmos once more in order to defeat Bowser. However, this time he has a reliable companion in the form of his loyal mount, Yoshi.

Reasons for our admiration: Have you ever encountered a game so exceptional that it caused you to reconsider all the previous ones you have played? For me, that game was Super Mario Galaxy. It was an incredible accomplishment that set a new standard for platformers. And yet, just a few years later, Nintendo managed to surpass it with an even more remarkable game.

Despite a bewildering amount of mechanics being thrown at the player, Galaxy 2 still manages to remain an absolute joy. A couple of the rough edges have been sanded off, making it a “kitchen sink”game where each mechanic is dangled at you for just the right amount of time.

Yoshi introduces some exhilarating new moves that are incredibly satisfying to execute. Additionally, there are fantastic new suits such as the Cloud and Rock powers. Be sure to try out both, but most importantly, make sure to play this one.

Our appreciation for it: While there is no such thing as a perfect game, Inside may be one of the closest contenders. Its impeccable execution is what sets it apart. Despite not being the most expansive or ambitious game, this puzzle platformer stands out as one of the most polished experiences in the world of gaming. It tasks players with navigating a boy through a factory filled with dangerous enemies and a sense of oppressive authoritarianism, capturing the same feeling as the best SCP entries. As Zagrius, the son of Hades, the god of the underworld, your goal is to escape the underworld and reach Olympus. However, Hades will not make it easy for you and you must overcome numerous enemies, bosses, and unexpected foes in order to succeed.

What makes us love it: Supergiant Games excels in two areas: combat and art style. As soon as you embark on your journey through the Underworld, you’ll be captivated by the stunning character designs and superb voice acting. The mix of cartoonish and dynamic visuals gives a fresh perspective to the Greek heroes, adding a touch of humanity to their tragic circumstances.

What draws us to it: Stardew Valley is a farming simulation that initially captures you with its cute chickens, but ultimately immerses you in a battle against a powerful corporation for the betterment of the community.

The intricate plot of Stardew Valley is complemented by a relatable and authentic cast of characters, each facing their own battles with mental illness, poverty, homelessness, and complicated relationships. This serves to ground the game in a realistic setting, rather than an idealized fantasy, ultimately making it highly relatable and strengthening the player’s bond with their small farming community.

Destiny 2 is an action-packed first-person shooter game that allows players to become Guardians and battle for the survival of humanity. This game offers a variety of unique PvE activities, including Raids and dungeons, as well as PvP gameplay between players. Despite facing some challenges, Destiny 2 has ultimately become a standout shooter. With the addition of Forsaken, the game has truly reached its full potential.

Over the years, there have been both successes and challenges, but it all came together with an exceptional finale in The Final Shape. This emotional climax marked the end of a 10-year journey for Bungie’s players, and achieving such triumph is a rarity in the world of live service games. Despite any low points, Bungie has always managed to take players on an unforgettable journey, making Destiny 2 a desirable model for any live service game. It has set the standard for shooter games, the development of modern live service games, and top-notch social systems. When Destiny 2 is at its peak, there is truly no other experience quite like it.

Summary: This first-person shooter follows a scientist who is unexpectedly transported to a futuristic, dystopian Earth. In order to free the planet from its alien oppressors, the scientist joins a resistance group.

Despite being released in 2004, Half-Life 2 remains a masterpiece of game design and continues to impress players in 2024. Instead of rehashing old material, Valve took the bold approach of crafting a completely new story with only subtle nods to the original Half-Life. This decision was a major factor in the game’s success and its enduring impact.

The decision to upgrade to the Source Engine proved to be highly beneficial for the game. Along with top-notch graphics for its time, Half-Life 2 also introduced physics puzzles, expansive levels, and seamless movement that have become iconic features of the game. The engine’s widespread use in numerous games since then has solidified it as one of Valve’s most successful choices.

Whether immersing in intense survival rounds of Infection, narrowly winning a close Capture the Flag match, or simply participating in regular TDM battles of Slayer, there is an abundance of reasons to admire this game.

The addition of Forge in Halo 3 marked a significant milestone for the game as it allowed players to utilize a multiplayer map editor and create their own unique game modes. Tetris Company

About the game: This puzzle game requires the player to align falling blocks with utmost accuracy and clear as many blocks as possible to achieve a high score.

The reason we appreciate it: Tetris has the potential to be the ultimate video game.

Moving things in a nice way is not the only factor, as the growing sense of pressure is equally important. As soon as you begin to feel like a master of the titular Tetrominos, the speed increases and challenges your thumb twiddling abilities.

Despite its age, the enduring success of titles such as Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo vs Tetris, and others only serves to reaffirm the timeless appeal of its core formula, which could easily be re-released as a classic today. Additionally, the original theme still retains its catchy and enjoyable qualities.

20. Dark Souls (2011)

Fromsoft

Overview: Serving as the spiritual sequel to Demon’s Souls from 2009, Dark Souls follows the journey of an undead warrior as they embark on a perilous mission to break free from their curse before it consumes them entirely.

Despite its grim and depressing world where danger lurks at every turn, Dark Souls has captivated us with its enthralling adventure. Its reputation for relentless difficulty and epic boss battles has solidified its status as a cult classic.

Dark Souls’ gameplay relies heavily on trial-and-error, creating a compelling urge for players to overcome each obstacle and experience the satisfying feeling of triumph. 19. The Release of Grand Theft Auto V (2013)

best games gamescom grand theft auto v
Rockstar

Three individuals with vastly different backgrounds unite to execute some of the most daring robberies in the history of San Andreas.

What makes it so appealing: There is a clear explanation for the immense popularity of Rockstar’s take on American society, making it the second highest-selling game of all time. The game provides a fully immersive sandbox experience, with meticulous attention given to every city block, countryside stretch, and off-road strip mall.

Similarly, its characters are also noteworthy. The intertwining story of Franklin, Michael, and Trevor – combined with the remarkable feature of being able to switch between all three in real-time – presents the most comprehensive and immersive narrative that any mainline GTA game has ever provided.

The trio is a unique addition to the GTA franchise, as players develop a sense of attachment to these characters despite their despicable behavior and lack of principles. Even with its impressive technological advancements, it is difficult to imagine how GTA 6 could surpass its predecessor besides having better graphics.

The History and Impact of World of Warcraft (2004)

Blizzard Entertainment

Synopsis: This epic MMORPG adventure has a rich twenty-year history and takes place in the enchanted lands of Azeroth and beyond.

The reason for our admiration: In the past 30 years, many MMORPGs have risen and fallen, but none have had the same impact as World of Warcraft. Its immersive world, unforgettable characters, and impressive class system make it a comprehensive gaming experience that continues to attract millions of players.

The revival of past eras of WoW was a brilliant move, and the Classic version of the game remains just as impressive as it was in 2004. Blizzard truly captured something special with World of Warcraft, and despite numerous attempts to imitate it, no other game has been able to achieve the same perfect balance that sets WoW apart from its competitors.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Geralt and Ciri sitting together
CD Projekt RED

Why it’s beloved: Although all chapters of CD Projekt RED’s Witcher series have their own devoted fan base, it was the third game that truly propelled the franchise into mainstream popularity. While the previous entries maintained a dark and sarcastic tone in their portrayal of European fantasy, Wild Hunt added a touch of emotion and vulnerability to The Witcher’s tough exterior, making it even more captivating.

The core of Wild Hunt lies in the intricate father-daughter dynamic between Geralt and Ciri, but the expertly crafted supporting characters, immersive world, captivating quests, and polished combat elevate the game to new heights. Despite the attention given to Henry Cavill’s portrayal in the live-action adaptation, VA Doug Cockle’s masterful portrayal of Geralt remains one of the most exceptional characters in gaming.

Nintendo

About the game: HeartGold and SoulSilver allow players to take on the role of a new trainer embarking on a thrilling journey through the Johto region. While the game introduces new features and Pokemon, the ultimate goal remains the same: catch all the Pokemon and become the ultimate trainer.

Reasons for its popularity: For many Pokemon players, especially those of a certain generation (myself included), Silver and Gold hold a special place in our hearts as the ultimate Pokemon games. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the remakes, which combine upgraded gameplay with a powerful sense of nostalgia, continue to be a fan favorite. While they may not have revolutionized the series, these impressive remakes successfully captured the beloved elements of the originals and added a refreshing touch that revitalized the experience.

The sense of adventure was heightened by the improved graphics, updated mechanics, and added features such as the Pokéwalker accessory, which allowed players to take their Pokémon on the go. Additionally, the feature of having your Pokémon follow you around added to the feeling of the world being more alive and strengthened the bond between trainer and Pokémon.

15. Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)

Summary: This first-person shooter takes place in a distant future and follows the journey of Master Chief, a genetically-enhanced super soldier, as he fights against a hostile alien race on the enigmatic ring-world called Halo.

The reason for our admiration: When Xbox was first released, it required a standout game to establish itself, and Halo: Combat Evolved succeeded in being one of the most critical launch titles to date. With its strong shooting mechanics, captivating storyline, and advanced AI for its time, Bungie successfully revolutionized the FPS genre and brought it into the modern era.

Despite its successful campaign, Halo truly flourished in the multiplayer realm. Its meticulous weapon balancing and diverse selection of maps kept players engaged in the game’s versus modes long after they had completed the story. LAN parties were a popular occurrence, thanks to the Xbox’s “System Link”feature, and the game remains highly regarded as one of the greatest multiplayer experiences in history.

What we appreciate about it: Final Fantasy 7 holds a significant place in the history of video games. It played a crucial role in the success of the PlayStation, introduced Japanese role-playing games to a vast audience, and contributed to the global recognition of Square Enix (previously known as Squaresoft).

While the achievements may not be what fans remember, it is the game’s overall experience that truly stands out. From the very start, Final Fantasy 7 captivates players with its immersive world and the challenges faced by its characters, as depicted in the stunning opening cutscene. 11. Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Leon kennedy in
Capcom

The fourth installment of the Resident Evil franchise centers around Leon S. Kennedy’s mission to save Ashley Graham, the daughter of the US President who has been abducted by a enigmatic cult and is being held captive in Spain.

What we appreciate about it: Released in 2005, Resident Evil 4 completely transformed the Resident Evil franchise. Previous games in the series relied on clunky controls and stationary camera angles to limit player control. However, RE4 introduced a dynamic over-the-shoulder camera view, revolutionizing the gameplay mechanics that are still used today.

Although the game may not be considered frightening by some (Editor’s note: That may not be the case for everyone), it does create a high level of tension. Ammunition is limited, and many enemies are difficult to defeat, resulting in a terrifying experience. While one would typically anticipate horror games to feature dark and ominous characters, RE4 offers a plethora of entertaining and quirky characters that provide moments of comic relief. The iconic weapon merchant’s famous line, “Ah! I’ll buy it at a high price!”is sure to stay with you forever.

10. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

Key art from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Activision

Summary: This installment of CoD is the first to portray modern warfare. It puts players in the shoes of British SAS officers and US Army soldiers as they battle Russian Ultranationalists and a separatist faction led by Khaled Al-Asad.

The reason we admire it: The origins of the current CoD era can be linked back to the original Modern Warfare, with both positive and negative aspects. MW established the norm of intense campaigns with its anti-war theme (and remains the most exceptional installment in the franchise), and its multiplayer mode also introduced the concept of live service through its DLCs. This paved the way for a series of outstanding CoD games from Activision, marking it as the beginning of CoD’s reign of cultural influence.

9. Bloodborne (2015)

Bloodborne Moon presence boss descending from red blood moon as hunter watches on
FromSoftware

Summary: In a city overrun by a deadly plague and vicious creatures, a solitary hunter embarks on a mission to confront these dangers and break the cycle of destruction and hopelessness that has consumed the city.

We are drawn to Bloodborne because it serves as a spiritual successor to Demon’s and Dark Souls, maintaining the successful formula of its predecessors. In this installment, the journey takes place in a grim and nightmarish city, departing from the original backdrop setting and adopting a Victorian aesthetic.

This feature enables players to utilize firearms, abandon shields, and engage in more aggressive combat. Additionally, Bloodborne embraces its Lovecraftian elements and incorporates a survival horror atmosphere, setting it apart from previous Souls games. Despite these differences, Bloodborne remains a prominent member of the FromSoftware Souls series, and its fans eagerly await a remaster or sequel.

8. Release Date for Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023

It's obvious why these are the least popular Baldur's Gate 3 classes
Larian Studios

What is the plot of the story? Following the invasion of a Mindflayer who implants a lethal tadpole into your mind, you embark on a dangerous quest to reach Baldur’s Gate. Throughout your journey, you will form alliances, experience heartache, and engage in battles to rid yourself of the curse.

Reason for its popularity: Baldur’s Gate 3 captured the attention of the world upon its release. It rivaled the renowned Skyrim and its expansive world, earning the adoration of RPG enthusiasts worldwide.

Despite a year passing, it’s no surprise that it still maintains a devoted following. Its companions are well-developed, its quests are engrossing, and there is always fresh content to discover and conquer. However, it’s the gripping storyline that truly deserves credit for its triumph. When discussing the greatest video games in history, it’s nearly impossible to overlook this highly acclaimed and beloved epic from the past decade.

7. Mass Effect 2 (2010)

Summary: Commander Shepard enlists the help of a group of devoted allies from various parts of the universe in his ongoing fight against the Reapers.

We have a strong fondness for this RPG due to its ability to seamlessly incorporate freedom of choice as a core gameplay element rather than a mere gimmick.

In the role of Shepard, the player’s interactions with each potential member of the Normandy crew, whether it be aiding them in overcoming personal struggles or resolving deep-seated conflicts, hold significant and enduring significance.

By refusing to acknowledge a crewmate’s internal struggles and disregarding their pleas for assistance, you will not be able to rely on them when confronting the Reapers. However, if you genuinely care and foster strong bonds with your team, they will become like family and remain fiercely devoted to your cause, even in the face of annihilation.

6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)

About: After being asleep for a hundred years, Link wakes up with no recollection in a ruined Hyrule that has been plunged into turmoil by Ganon. To aid Link in regaining his memories and ultimately rescuing Zelda and the land from the terror of Calamity Ganon, players must navigate through a vast open world.

Reasons for our admiration: Is there anything left to be said about Breath of the Wild that hasn’t already been said? As one of the top launch titles and the greatest Zelda game, it played a major role in the success of the Nintendo Switch as one of the most popular consoles ever. This comes as no surprise, as the game ingeniously transforms Hyrule into a thrilling sandbox world.

Breath of the Wild truly stays true to the open-world genre’s promise of “go anywhere, do anything.”While there are certain objectives and plot points that players should aim for, the world of BOTW’s Hyrule is full of endless opportunities to explore and discover. Instead of constantly spoon-feeding objectives and cluttering the screen with waypoints, BOTW’s Hyrule rewards players for their curiosity and willingness to explore.

Despite some longtime Zelda fans criticizing the game for deviating from traditional Zelda dungeons, it is undeniable that Breath of the Wild has had a significant impact. This is evident in its influence on recent games such as Genshin Impact and Elden Ring.

Top 5 Reasons Why Portal 2 is a Must-Play Game

portal 2 chell and glados
Valve

Synopsis: In Portal 2, players once again take on the role of Chell, the silent protagonist, as they explore uncharted territories within Aperture Science Labs.

What we admire about it: With progressively challenging puzzles, thought-provoking narrative, and well-crafted characters such as the fan-favorite GLaDOS, this follow-up builds upon the groundwork established by its predecessor in every possible aspect.

The inclusion of advanced physics systems and a cooperative mode allows for the creation of even more complex test chambers. Additionally, the addition of new mechanics such as Gels adds an extra layer of challenge to the puzzles, as players must navigate through both sterile test environments and industrial spaces with a 1950s aesthetic by bouncing and sliding.

The Last of Us (2013)

the last of us remastered
Sony Interactive Entertainment

After two decades since a catastrophic outbreak, a smuggler named Joel is given the responsibility of guiding a teenage girl named Ellie across a desolate America. Joel’s lack of trust and reluctance to form attachments creates tension between the two from the start.

What we Appreciate: Similar to Resident Evil 4, The Last of Us elevates its survival-action gameplay. Taking down common infected like Runners resembles typical zombie scenarios, but the introduction of Clickers and their heightened hearing challenges the typical undead conventions, making stealth a more effective strategy.

Despite its lack of originality, TLoU stands out in terms of its storytelling. Few games have managed to portray complex characters in such a cinematic manner, a success largely due to the outstanding performances of Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, as well as the development team’s meticulous attention to detail.

Persona 5 (2016)

Persona 5 Best Game 2024
Atlus

The story revolves around a group known as the Phantom Thieves, who aim to purify the hearts of the corrupt in a society ruled by corruption. However, being teenagers, they also have to juggle their other responsibilities like attending high school while carrying out their reality-bending superhero missions.

What we appreciate about it: While it may seem strange to associate an RPG with style, Persona 5 stands out with its abundance of flair. From its anti-authority aesthetic to the use of graffiti and hot jazz, the game fully embraces its unique look and feel. Even its combat system, although turn-based, manages to be thrilling and dynamic thanks to this rebellious theme.

The aesthetic holds significant value in Persona 5, considering its length and the amount of time you will spend immersed in it. Fortunately, the captivating soundtrack and dynamic combat never lose their appeal, but they are not the only reasons to continue playing. The game has perfected the formula established in its predecessors to an exceptional level.

The enticing narrative of the Phantom Thieves is not the only aspect that makes Persona 5 a captivating game. The gradual release of new content through Social Links and dungeons adds to the enjoyment of the game. Balancing your time between gaining strength and building relationships with potential love interests is a unique and enjoyable experience. It is no wonder that even after spending 100 hours playing, many players were reluctant to see the game come to an end.

Rockstar Games

Synopsis: Red Dead Redemption 2 is the third installment in the Red Dead series by Rockstar Games, serving as a prequel to Red Dead Redemption. Taking place during the final years of the Wild West, the game tells the story of the Van der Linde gang, a band of outlaws who challenge the corrupt establishment and adhere to their own code of ethics.

What makes it stand out: Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered to be one of the most lifelike video games to date. Its immersive world allows for endless possibilities and interactions with non-playable characters, making it possible to spend hours apart from the main storyline.

The map is meticulously crafted with attention to detail in every area. Although the main missions of the game are primarily linear and do not allow for much experimentation, the open world encourages players to thoroughly explore the map and its various nooks and crannies.

Despite its countless hidden secrets, RDR2 truly shines with its captivating storyline and heart-wrenching conclusion that will leave players in tears. From solving chilling serial killer cases to encountering ghost trains, the game is packed with obscure details that only add to its immersive experience.

Ring of Fire (2022)

Elden Ring cataclysm system reveals new areas
FromSoftware

Synopsis: Elden Ring is a challenging game in the style of Dark Souls, where players take on the role of a Tarnished adventurer and journey through the perilous Lands Between, facing off against some of From Software’s toughest bosses to date.

What we appreciate about it: There are numerous opinions on which FromSoftware game is the best. Some may argue for the original Dark Souls or Demon Souls, while others may prefer Bloodborne for its aggressiveness and horror elements. And those who enjoy a challenge may swear by Sekiro. Nevertheless, it would be difficult to find anyone who disagrees with the excellence of Elden Ring.

Elden Ring seems to be the ultimate combination of FromSoftware’s past creations. With a vast open-world to traverse and limitless options for character customization, it truly encompasses the studio’s signature approach. Additionally, it stands out as their most accessible game, allowing players to discover their own unique playstyle.

In contrast to a game such as Sekiro, which requires players to adhere strictly to its demands, Elden Ring prioritizes self-expression. Whether you prefer to be a powerful warrior equipped with a shield, a deadly reaper wielding a scythe, a user of Scarlet Rot, or a sorcerer who wields death magic, the world of the Lands Beyond offers a vast canvas for players to discover their true selves amidst its numerous perils.

Furthermore, the game is not only visually stunning but also boasts a haunting and captivating tone that seeps into every aspect. Its ability to create a cohesive and immersive world is unparalleled, earning it a spot among the most exquisite works in the medium. Even for those who may struggle with Souls games, Elden Ring offers a generous on-ramping experience, making it a must-try. This world is a masterpiece of complexity and intrigue, solidifying its place as one of the greatest games ever made, as confirmed by our voting.
