These Rare In-N-Out collectors item are selling for big money: Here’s how to get one

Did you know that there is a valuable In-N-Out Burger souvenir that can be obtained for free and resold for almost $1,000 on the internet? It may sound unbelievable, but it’s true.

The coveted In-N-Out coin, often sold on second-hand shopping sites like eBay, is the item in question and can fetch prices as high as $800.

Over 70 years ago, In-N-Out co-founder Harry Snyder introduced his first burger coin in 1958. This was during a time when the fast-food giant only had three stores in operation.

There have been ongoing rumors for decades about the method of obtaining one of these highly coveted collector’s items, but the solution is surprisingly straightforward.

To be eligible for an In-N-Out coin, all customers have to do is be the first person to visit a newly opened restaurant.

According to In-N-Out chief operating officer Denny Warnick, the company does not actively promote or commemorate the opening of new stores. However, it is a long-standing tradition to gift the first customer with an In-N-Out Burger coin, a T-shirt, and a complimentary meal. This was shared with the Eureka Times-Standard in 2020, prior to the opening of a new In-N-Out location in California.

In her book “The Ins-n-Outs of In-N-Out Burger,”Lynsi Snyder, the owner of the brand, discusses their decision to use a coin as a collectible item. According to Snyder, a coin’s durability and permanence make it the perfect choice as a reminder of unspent funds and the place, time, and circumstances of acquisition.

“Potential customers were more likely to make their first visit to the store and spend that coin. Harry’s hope was that this initial visit would turn them into lifelong customers.”

The book states that every burger coin has the ability to buy items from the In-N-Out menu and does not have an expiry date.

The burger coin has twelve variations in existence as of 2024, one of which is exceptionally rare. It is the $20 solid silver coin that is exclusively given to employees who have been promoted to the position of store manager.

Currently, there are a total of 275 In-N-Out locations in California, 43 in Texas, and 34 in Arizona. Additionally, other states such as Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Texas each have at least one store as well.

In the previous month, In-N-Out gained attention for their plans to open multiple locations in Tennessee by 2026. Furthermore, a new store is also planned to open in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On its opening day, the In-N-Out store in Idaho had an 8-hour wait at the drive-thru, demonstrating the high demand for new locations.
