The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards took place on May 7 at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, bringing together the top names in South Korea’s popular culture and arts scene to shine. The competition was tough, with a larger number of exceptional works nominated than in previous years.
On the same day, a post titled “5 Unfortunate Works with No Awards at the Baeksang Arts Awards” quickly circulated on the online community “Theqoo” , garnering a great deal of empathy.
Despite being nominated, “Concrete Utopia”, “Boyhood”from Coupang Play, “Daily Dose of Sunshine”from Netflix, “The Good Bad Mother”from JTBC, and “Doctor Cha”from JTBC did not win any awards on this day.
In particular, Um Jung-hwa, the lead actress of JTBC’s “Doctor Cha”, was nominated for Best Actress in the TV category at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards. Despite her nomination, she did not win the award and it was instead given to Honey Lee (Knight Flower).
Despite airing last year, JTBC’s “Doctor Cha”still remained extremely popular. Its vibrant characters and suspenseful plot were highly acclaimed, leading to widespread interest and impressive ratings.
For five consecutive weeks, the drama remained at the top of the popularity ranking, with Um Jung-hwa and Kim Byung-chul holding the first and second positions, respectively.
In particular, it ended on a high note with a rating of 18.5% in the final episode.
Members of Theqoo community, who had high expectations for the awards, shared their disappointment and left comments such as, “It’s truly disheartening for ‘Doctor Cha’…,” “I’m impressed by how well ‘Doctor Cha’ was received,” “The timing for ‘Doctor Cha’ couldn’t have been worse,” “They should have given ‘Doctor Cha’ more recognition, seriously,” “It’s a shame for ‘Doctor Cha’… I was rooting for Um Jung-hwa to win,” “It’s a superbly crafted drama,” “With good ratings as well, what a missed opportunity,” and so on.
