This MCU star is unrecognizable as Jesus

An Oscar-nominated star known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is playing Jesus in a new movie…and you might not recognize him.

The son of the Christian God has been played by many actors in the cinema: Willem Dafoe in The Last Temptation of Christ, Claude Heater in Ben-Hur, Kenneth Colley in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, Jonathan Roumie in The Chosen and Jim Caviezel in The Passion of the Christ are undoubtedly the most notable examples, among many others.

The Book of Clarence offers its own interpretation of the Bible, following a down-on-his-luck man (LaKeith Stanfield) in first-century Jerusalem who wants to escape poverty by capitalizing on Jesus’ ascension by becoming its 13th apostle.

Jesus himself appears in the film, played by Nicholas Pinnock. But he is not the only character to be taken for the messiah: his interpreter is a world-famous star, appearing in huge franchises like The Hobbit or MCU films.

Benedict Cumberbatch is unrecognizable in The Book of Clarence

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Benjamin, a beggar in Jerusalem who is mistaken for another messiah – we won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers, but business isn’t particularly booming for him.

“Benedict Cumberbatch embodying his heyday fantasy as White Jesus will make you die of laughter,” reacted a viewer on X/Twitter. “Benedict Cumberbatch ‘s revelation in The Book of Clarence finished me off,” tweeted another.

“The Book of Clarence was a cool movie. It didn’t upset me, but it was cool. Benedict Cumberbatch coming out of nowhere was funny lol,” wrote a third. “Benedict Cumberbatch in The Book of Clarence is something I never imagined possible,” posted a fourth user on social networks.

The Book of Clarence does not yet have a certain date for France, but has a good chance of being released at the end of March 2024.
