The LCS made a major announcement through a video detailing significant alterations for the 2024 Summer Split. These changes include the reintroduction of best-of-three series, a lower bracket in the playoffs using a gauntlet-style format, and a noteworthy enhancement to the viewing experience.
The LCS commissioner Mark ‘MarkZ’ Zimmerman announced on June 3 that the league will be implementing changes in accordance with their “fan first”approach for 2024.
MarkZ stressed the fact that these changes are currently being tested, as Riot is aiming to collect additional data on viewership and fan satisfaction before implementing any major alterations for 2025 or beyond.
However, the most intriguing alteration, which was not highlighted heavily in the announcement, is the addition of a Twitch extension on the LCS main channel.
The announcement for the Twitch extension occurs at the 3:44 timestamp in the video displayed above.
“MarkZ stated that while the game is in progress, viewers have the ability to click and access in-depth information about builds and gameplay. This feature is particularly thrilling for us during live patches, as it provides fans with additional knowledge to apply in their own games right away.”
Esports has been utilizing Twitch extensions for quite some time. For instance, Dota 2 also offers a comparable extension for streamers, while streaming platforms in China have their own equivalent features.

Despite being played on the live League of Legends patch, the implementation of this strategy in the LCS should provide casual players with a reason to tune in after a new update is released. This allows them to observe how professional players adapt to and utilize new items, champions, or systems.
It appears that the changes implemented in the LCS have generated excitement among fans, but the introduction of this extension should garner even more interest than the revival of best-of-three matches or the implementation of a new playoff format.
