TikTok Star Faces Backlash for ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ Video at Met Gala

Haleyy Baylee, a popular TikTok personality, is facing scrutiny for her use of audio from Kristen Dunst’s movie Marie Antoinette during the 2024 Met Gala.

The 2024 Met Gala generated numerous viral moments, but influencer Haleyy Baylee’s controversial TikTok was not one that fans had anticipated.

Baylee, also known as Haley Kalil, shared a video on May 6 featuring herself wearing a stunning floral headdress and doll-like makeup at a prominent fashion event. In the clip, she lip syncs to a well-known line from Kristen Dunst’s 2006 movie, Marie Antoinette: “Let them eat cake.”

The video has amassed more than 16 million views in a mere two days… and it appears that viewers are not pleased with it.

The audience reacted negatively to Kalil’s audio selection and expressed their disapproval in the comments section, describing the video as “dystopian”and drawing comparisons to scenes from the Hunger Games.

“One user wrote, observing this from District 12.”

Another person pointed out that the sound added to the already dystopian atmosphere of the Met Gala.

Another person remarked, “This seems rather ominous considering the current circumstances!”

According to legend, a princess from the 18th century is said to have uttered the phrase ‘let them eat cake’ upon learning that her people had no bread to eat. This demonstrates her lack of concern or understanding for their hardships.

It is commonly believed that the statement was made by Antoinette, the final queen of France who was executed during the French Revolution in 1792.

Nevertheless, there is a ongoing discussion among historians regarding the authenticity of Antoinette’s statement, as it was originally attributed to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Confessions, which was published in 1765 – a time when Antoinette was only nine years old and had not yet visited France.

In light of the current economic situation in the United States, with increasing gas prices and rising inflation, netizens have drawn a parallel between Kalil’s TikTok and Antoinette’s rumored attitude towards her starving subjects.

Despite facing criticism for her video, Kalil was amazed to discover that she had gained 10 million followers on the app following her appearance at the Met. The achievement brought the creator to tears.
