TikTok has recently revealed a major initiative for anime through a new partnership that the video platform is launching in Japan.
TikTok, being one of the largest social media platforms globally, wields significant influence. In a positive move for the anime industry, the company has chosen to collaborate with Nippon Anime and Film Culture Association, utilizing its power for good.
The partnership is committed to aiding more individuals in acquiring the necessary abilities to one day become proficient in producing exceptional anime. This will be accomplished through tutorials, exclusive features on established creators, and other NAFCA content. Masuo Ueda, president of NAFCA, expressed his gratitude towards TikTok for their support of the “Animator Skills Test”which aims to cultivate talent in the anime industry. In the future, the plan is to use TikTok to disseminate information about the “Animator Skills Test”and provide one-point lessons for creators.
While many may consider platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll as the go-to for watching anime, the simulcast of the recent show Kaiju No 8 on X/Twitter as part of a streaming deal proves that this type of partnership is not uncommon. Collaborating with social media giants presents a great opportunity to reach a wider audience who may not have otherwise given this content a chance.
With its growing popularity on TikTok, it is no surprise that anime has already gained a strong following. At any given time, a simple search of the tag will reveal a plethora of creative edits, memes, unboxings, and more. While there are also lessons and process clips available, they often get overshadowed by the abundance of cosplays and skits. This partnership, however, may provide a platform for these educational videos to reach a wider audience.
According to Yoichi Sato, general manager of TikTok in Japan, the company plans to collaborate closely with members of the anime industry to offer diverse forms of assistance and promote the industry.
