TikTok’s Chroming Challenge Leads to 12-Year-Old’s Cardiac Arrest

A child experienced a cardiac arrest while participating in the TikTok “chroming”challenge. His mother is now spreading his story in an effort to discourage others from attempting the hazardous trend.

Nichola King discovered that her 12-year-old son Cesar had suffered a seizure after trying out the “chroming”challenge on TikTok.

Nichola remembered hearing a moaning sound coming from downstairs and immediately feared that Cesar had suffered a broken bone. She rushed downstairs and found Cesar lying on the floor with his eyes rolling back into his head.

After being discovered by his mother, she administered CPR while one of his siblings dialed for emergency assistance. The 12-year-old was then rushed to the hospital and experienced cardiac arrest, leading to a 48-hour medically-induced coma.

Nichola recounted the terrifying moment when she witnessed her son collapse and hit his head. She was completely bewildered and had no clue as to what had caused his sudden fall. As she watched him turn blue and cease to breathe, she was filled with the belief that he had passed away. The shock of the incident left her in a state of disbelief, as she had just witnessed her son’s life slip away before her eyes.

After eight days, Cesar was discharged from the hospital once he was able to walk and talk independently. However, his mother is worried about any potential long-term consequences of her son’s brush with death.

“We are uncertain about potential long-term effects, however, his short-term memory appears to be severely impaired. He was unable to recall recent events,”she reported.

Despite not being familiar with TikTok’s “chroming”challenge, Nichola decided to share her son’s experience after he was introduced to it by an older friend. Her intention was to warn others and prevent them from participating in this hazardous trend.

“According to Nichola, the temporary satisfaction is not worth the consequences. She emphasized the discomfort of being hospitalized and struggling to breathe, as well as the burden placed on parents. She also emphasized the importance of parents being trained in first aid.”

The dangerous trend of inhaling chemicals from aerosol cans, known as the “challenge,”has tragically claimed the life of 11-year-old Tommie-lee Gracie Billington. In March, Billington’s parents shared that their child “died instantly”after partaking in the challenge, and they are now actively advocating for its removal from TikTok.
