TikTok has recently released a new app called Whee on the Google Play Store, which shares many similarities with Meta’s Instagram.
The Whee app, described as the “best place for close friends to share life moments,”has been quietly published on the Play Store by ByteDance’s TikTok, as noted by APKMirror founder Artem Russakovskii on his Twitter account.
According to the Play Store description, Whee is a recently launched social app designed to facilitate staying in touch with your inner circle by capturing and sharing candid photos. These photos are only visible to your friends, giving you the freedom to express your true self.
The interface and features of the social media app are reminiscent of Instagram. The home screen offers a scrollable feed, a direct messaging option, and a button for creating posts. Additionally, the app enables users to share photos and interact with their friends’ posts by liking and commenting on them.
Whee is currently live on the Google Play Store, but it is not currently available for download in the US. We also searched for it on Apple’s App Store, but it was not found there either.
TikTok Notes, a new app with features similar to Instagram but a feed reminiscent of Pinterest, was released on April 17. However, it is yet to reach a wider audience, making it not the first attempt by TikTok to enter the competition with Instagram.
TikTok and ByteDance are in a legal battle to oppose a recent law that would require them to sell TikTok’s US operations or risk being banned. The outcome of this legal dispute could determine the future of the app, which currently boasts more than 150 million users in the United States.
