Tim Walz Twitch Rally Features Engaging Zoomer-Friendly World of Warcraft Gameplay

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz have employed an innovative approach by broadcasting their recent campaign rally on Twitch, prominently featuring World of Warcraft gameplay to engage a younger audience.

While the trend of presidential candidates utilizing Twitch isn’t entirely new, the Harris campaign is setting itself apart as the 2024 elections approach. On October 9, Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz, known for his enthusiasm for geek culture, held a rally in Arizona.

Instead of simply streaming the rally on their official Twitch account, the campaign chose a unique format. The event takes up just a quarter of the screen, leaving the majority of the broadcast for random World of Warcraft gameplay.

To host the gameplay, they brought in Twitch streamer Preheat, who generously offered to provide his gaming session during the rally. Although it has no direct link to the in-person event, this strategy is aimed at attracting a younger, predominantly male demographic.

While broadcasting from Tucson, the live feed encountered interruptions, at times leaving viewers to watch only WoW gameplay instead of the rally.

“To clarify, Tim Walz won’t be playing WoW alongside me,” Preheat stated before the event started. There is no actual gaming interaction from Walz during the stream; rather, he is delivering his speech to the audience in Arizona while the MMO action runs concurrently.

As the campaign strives to connect with the younger audience on Twitch, future rallies may very well include elements like Subway Surfer or Family Guy in tandem with WoW gameplay.

Preheat expressed that it would be “really cool” to have Walz join him for a gaming session leading up to the November 5 Election Day, though there’s no assurance that this collaboration will take place.

Walz, who proudly identifies as a self-proclaimed geek, has shown a strong interest in gaming throughout his career. During his time as Minnesota’s Governor, he publicly supported a high school esports team competing in Valorant.

“You are pioneers in transforming a passion into a significant career opportunity in the emerging realm of sports,” Walz remarked back then.

It’s uncertain whether this engaging rally idea originated directly from Walz or his campaign team, but with over 4,400 viewers tuning in for the event – and Preheat attracting over a thousand on his channel – it’s evident that this approach has successfully captured attention.
