In the survival game Sons of the Forest, players find themselves at the mercy of nature, cannibal mutants and a mysterious group of explorers. Initially sent to the island as part of a rescue team, they immediately find themselves in an unpredictable environment where they have to get food and water. Players must also watch out for cannibals that have set up several camps in the forest and are hostile towards them.
Building a base is one of the most important aspects of the game, as it allows players to sleep and keep their character alive. The shelter can take many forms, including a canvas tent or a more elaborate structure. Players can build all sorts of things to make their life on the island less dangerous and to protect themselves as much as possible.
There are a few things to keep in mind when creating a refuge base: location, building layout, and installation. After crash landing on the island, players are free to explore it until they find the perfect spot for their base.
Construction requires dedication, but it is worth the effort of those who want to live away from home, stuck on an island. This guide contains some tips, tricks and tricks on how to build the best base shelter in Sons of the Forest.
Find a safe place
When building a home base, you need to choose a good place. Look for an open area with good visibility, close to needed resources, and away from cannibal camps.
Picking the first level spot near the helicopter crash site can be tempting, but the area is drawing the attention of the island’s natives. The same can be said for many places marked on the map, such as purple GPS locators and green car trackers.
The forest is a large and diverse area, so there are many good places for bases. Forest clearings, snow-capped mountains or beaches provide the best view. Cannibals thrive in densely wooded areas because they can hide and use trees to get around. They also camp almost exclusively in the woods, and getting too close to their base will attract unwanted attention.
It is useful to build a base near a source of fresh water. Hunger, thirst, and energy naturally deplete as you move, and maintaining them is vital to good endurance. In addition, water and food can be found in the rivers, so having a river at least a few minutes walk saves time.
Gather more supplies
While players technically only need a tarp and a stick to build a useful shelter, there are many options for building something larger or more secure. However, these more complex building projects require a lot of materials such as logs, sticks, rocks, and bones to be collected by burning dead cannibals.
Sticks and stones can be collected almost anywhere on the island, but logs have to be cut one at a time using forest trees. This process is greatly accelerated when playing on a multiplayer server or with Kelvin’s AI Companion.
Sons of the Forest uses a more sophisticated and constantly learning AI system for enemies and companion characters. Kelvin has been with the players since the beginning, being the only surviving member of the rescue team. He can be ordered to collect stones and sticks, as well as cut down trees and turn them into logs. Be careful and protect him from cannibal attacks, because if he dies, then he will not be returned!
There is also a way to speed up the collection of logs with a rope cannon and ziplines. The Rope Cannon fires rope wherever players want to put it, and then they can place logs on top of it and roll them down to create the perfect stack at the end of the zipline.
The Rope Cannon is deep in one of the cave systems in the forest on the west side. Ropes and pitons can be borrowed from campsites.
Defense with a defensive wall
A protective wall is needed to slow down the movement of cannibals. Staying too long in one place anywhere in the forest guarantees an attack by the enemy, or at least an investigation. Cannibals will tear down the walls if they try hard enough, but building a strong perimeter around the base shelter will help deter them.
There are several options for a defensive wall. One option is to build a wall of spikes that will prevent the cannibals from jumping over the fence. Cannibals can knock over logs, but cannot climb them.
Players can find instructions for the spiked wall in the Survival Guide by pressing “B”. Lay two logs next to each other, and then use an ax to cut their tops into sharp spikes.
Another option is to build a standard foundation wall. This requires a lot more logs and time, but creates a stronger defensive wall that cannot be destroyed so quickly. Players should start by stacking the logs horizontally in the shape they want around the perimeter, and then laying more logs on top with vertical supports between the wall sections.

The Survival Guide has two modes: the first contains instructions and guides for creating individual elements such as stairs, walls, doors, etc. The second mode contains real blueprints of objects that you can place and then fill in with the necessary materials to automatically create the structure.
Blueprints make building much easier when players are just starting out. The blueprints can be used to make benches, chairs, and even a bed that can be used for storage and sleeping like a canvas tent.
For players lacking inventory space, the blueprints include stone, stick, and bone vaults, as well as animal traps. Even decorative items such as walkways and torches can be placed to decorate the base and make it more comfortable.
When you set the plan using the special command “Complete Construction”, Kelvin will collect and lay out the necessary materials. Just remember to give him a break from time to time so that he remains motivated to help.
How to create a custom hideout build
Blueprints are useful and necessary for some things, such as building houses. But players should not be limited to them. There are many ways to modify the base hideout using the free-building mechanic, as the blueprints are set in stone and cannot be edited. However, found buildings can be used as a starting point for ideas, and then expanded using the free building mechanic.
For example, create a blueprint for a watchtower and include the options you want, such as making it taller or adding a small defensive wall instead of placing a watchtower there.
