Todd Howard Addresses Starfield’s Creations Amid Paid Mod Controversy

Following the release of Starfield’s divisive Creations update, Todd Howard, the game’s director, has addressed player concerns by assuring them that changes will be made while also reiterating that paid mods will continue to be a part of the game.

The inclusion of Bethesda’s Creations in an update following the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9 has sparked criticism towards Starfield.

Formerly known as Creation Club, the platform enables individuals to share their free modifications or apply for the Bethesda Game Studios Verified Creator Program, which grants compensation for paid modifications.

Despite the widespread controversy surrounding paid mods, a significant amount of criticism has been directed towards one of the Trackers Alliance quests released on the platform. The first quest is available for free, but the second one requires 700 credits, equivalent to approximately $7.

Todd Howard spoke about the Creations controversy in an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, clarifying Bethesda’s motives and future strategies.

The discussion of the Creations controversy commences at 41:56.

When discussing pricing, Howard clarified, “We determine the prices by taking into account our previous experiences with Creation Club and Fallout 76. We constantly monitor the market to ensure that we are providing value to our customers, and if we fall short, we are open to making adjustments.”

He described The Trackers Alliance as a continuation of our work in Creation Club, where we offered players a unique outfit and weapon. We decided to take it a step further and incorporate them into a quest.

Howard acknowledged the mistake in pricing after receiving feedback from players. He stated, “We do not want players to feel like we are dividing and selling factions for 700 credits each.”He also mentioned that Bethesda will review the pricing and division of Creation mods.

Despite the controversies surrounding its use in Starfield, Fallout 4, and Skyrim, Todd Howard has also clarified that the Creations platform will remain in place.

Our perspective is that many [Creation Kit modders] have transitioned from being hobbyists to professionals. It is our responsibility to ensure that they are able to achieve this and receive compensation and recognition for their exceptional content,”he stated.
