According to the official website and X (formerly Twitter) handle for the anime, Tohai Mahjong is scheduled to debut in October 2024. The main cast for the series has been revealed by the official staff, along with this announcement. The production of the anime adaptation is being handled by East Fish Studio, as previously announced.
The Tohai Mahjong anime is based on the popular Japanese manga series of the same name, created by Koji Shinasaka. The manga was originally published in Akita Shoten’s Young Champion magazine from 2006 to 2011. In addition to the anime, the manga also inspired a live-action movie in 2013.
Tohai Mahjong Anime Set to Premiere in October 2024
As previously stated, the official team behind the Tohai Mahjong anime announced on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, that the series will premiere in October 2024. The announcement was also made in issue #12 of Akita Shoten’s Seinen magazine, Young Champion, and on the anime’s official website and X account.
Apart from announcing the release window, the staff also disclosed the main cast for the anime. As per the announcement, the main character Kei, a high school mahjong player who excels at playing under pressure, will be played by Kosuke Tanabe.
Kosuke-san is accompanied by Fairouz Ali, who takes on the role of Amina, a foreign girl who becomes Kei’s subordinate. Shunsuke Takeuchi has also been added to the voice cast as Tojima, a renowned mahjong player who has gained notoriety in the criminal underworld.
It is worth noting that both the anime’s website and X handle have released the character designs for each member of the cast. These designs prominently display the characters, giving viewers a glimpse of their appearances and fashion styles.
The official X handle for the Tohai Mahjong anime has recently received comments from the voice actors. Kosuke-san shared that his previous experience as a police officer has allowed him to accurately portray the protagonist in the anime’s underground scenes.
Fairouz Ali shared that she had started reading the original manga before auditioning for the role. The seiyuu also expressed her intrigue and fascination with the story. Similarly, Shunsuke Takeuchi expressed his excitement to be a part of an anime with a mahjong theme.
Tohai Mahjong anime’s staff and plot
Jun Hatori is the leader of this anime at East Fish Studios, overseeing the project while Mariko Kunisawa supervises the scriptwriting. Sayaka Anesaki has been brought on board as the character designer, and Yuki Kishida and Yusuke Shirato are in charge of composing the series’ music.
The anime is based on Koji Shinasaka’s manga series and follows the story of Kei, a high school student who frequents the underground mahjong parlor. His skills and tactics in the game earn him the nickname “K of Ice”in the underworld. With his impressive strategies and stylish gameplay, Kei embarks on an exhilarating journey.
