Tom Hardy Shares Disappointing Update on Future of Mad Max Franchise

George Miller is currently in the works of his fifth Mad Max movie, titled The Wasteland. However, fans hoping to see Tom Hardy reprise his role as Max Rockatansky in the sequel may be disappointed as he has some unfortunate news.

In 1979, Mel Gibson became the first actor to portray Mad Max and his role in the original trilogy catapulted him to international fame.

After Tom Hardy, it was Mad Max: Fury Road that took over — our pick for the best Mad Max movie of all. Recently, the prequel Furiosa was released, which largely excludes Max.

Despite writer-director George Miller’s intentions to conclude this new trilogy with a movie titled The Wasteland, which takes place after the events of Fury Road, Tom Hardy has expressed uncertainty about the project.

During an interview with Forbes to promote his new movie The Bikeriders, Hardy was asked about the possibility of a sequel. He responded by stating, “I don’t believe that will be happening.”

It is possible that Hardy is alluding to Furiosa’s underwhelming performance at the box office. Despite being in theaters for almost a month, the movie failed to exceed its budget in earnings. This makes The Wasteland a less financially feasible choice.

Perhaps he is also implying that he will not participate due to issues on the Fury Road set.

During an interview with The Telegraph discussing the shoot, George Miller stated that Tom Hardy had a certain intensity and talent that had to be brought out of him, despite whatever struggles he may have been facing at the time.

In the book ‘Blood, Sweat, and Chrome’, Hardy reflected on his relationship with co-star Charlize Theron, stating that he felt overwhelmed and out of his depth. The pressure placed on both of them was immense.

“What she required was a superior, potentially more knowledgeable collaborator in myself. I would like to believe that with my increased age and lack of attractiveness, I could still meet that challenge.”

However, based on this recent quote, it appears that Tom Hardy will not be taking on the role of Mad Max in a movie any time soon.
