Top 10 Underutilized Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen

While Jujutsu Kaisen features a diverse range of beloved characters, not all have been utilized effectively in the narrative. Here are the 10 most wasted characters in the series.

In typical shonen style, Jujutsu Kaisen presents numerous players from relatable protagonists to cool mentors, showcasing a variety of archetypes. Even the side characters are incredibly engaging, with many having the potential to lead their own spin-offs.

However, being intriguing isn’t always sufficient. A character must contribute meaningfully to the story for fans to hold them in high regard. When they don’t, they fall into the “wasted potential”category, where even their deaths fail to compensate for their lack of development.

Jujutsu Kaisen unfortunately adds several characters to this list. Despite having a slew of strong personalities that fans support, not all receive the attention they deserve. While some cases may be understandable, others are glaringly underwhelming. Here are 10 characters who warranted better treatment in Jujutsu Kaisen. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)

10. Yuji Itadori

It’s surprising to see the protagonist on this list, but Yuji Itadori truly belongs here. Introduced with immense promise, this seemingly ordinary boy can suppress the King of Curses and is destined for greatness.

However, the series fails to deliver on that promise, often overshadowing Yuji with side characters. He doesn’t even engage in a one-on-one fight with Sukuna during the final battle, and when he finally gets the spotlight, it’s undermined by another character’s sudden return.

9. Panda

Although the first-years of Tokyo Jujutsu High are central to Jujutsu Kaisen, the second and third-years, like Yuta and Maki, play crucial roles in the narrative. Unfortunately, their classmate Panda remains inconsequential, failing to impact the Shinjuku Showdown Arc. His last notable actions occur in the Culling Game Arc, which is disappointingly brief.

8. Right

Tengen in Jujutsu Kaisen

As an immortal jujutsu sorcerer holding humanity’s fate, Tengen appears crucial. While regarded as a god by non-sorcerers, Tengen’s significance in the plot is minimal. After dying, Kenjaku’s supposed use of the merger fails to result in any major developments.

7. The Word of God

Shoko Ieiri in Jujutsu Kaisen

Shoko Ieiri, as the healer of jujutsu sorcerers, had the potential for greater relevance due to her immense abilities, including the Reverse Curse Technique. However, her role in the story is limited, and her background – as a classmate of Gojo and Geto – remains largely unexplored.

6. Kinji Hakari

Gege Akutami/Shueisha

Gojo once mentioned that Hakari, alongside Yuta and Aoi, could surpass him, creating high expectations. However, despite an intriguing introduction in the Culling Game Arc, Hakari turns out to be a forgettable character with a confusing power set and only one memorable fight in the series. His much-anticipated battle against Uraume occurs off-screen, disappointing many fans.

5. Nobara Kugisaki

Nobara Kugisaki stands out among female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, with her unique personality and boldness. Her ‘death’ was initially impactful, presenting a fitting ending for her character, given her limited strength against later enemies. However, the decision to revive her as fan service undermines her earlier significance.

4. Toge Inumaki

Toge Inumaki’s Cursed Speech ability stands out among various powers in Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite this, he is more often sidelined after the Kyoto Goodwill Event. His potential for growth is ignored, and he appears only once in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, without making a significant impact.

3. Uraume

Uraume, an ancient sorcerer deeply connected to Sukuna, piques interest. However, their character is underexplored, leading to disappointment when their important confrontation occurs off-screen, followed by a sudden demise after Sukuna’s death.

2. Yuki Tsukumo

Gege Akutami/MAPPA

As the only female among the four Special Grade sorcerers, Yuki Tsukumo had immense potential for development. Her magnetic personality and sensible goals made her a promising character. Yet, despite her powerful techniques and a stunning introduction at the end of the Shibuya Incident Arc, her Domain Expansion goes unused, resulting in a missed opportunity to showcase her full capabilities.

1. Megumi Fushiguro

Gege Akutami/MAPPA

Megumi Fushiguro, the first jujutsu sorcerer Yuji encounters, holds significant potential. As a member of the Zenin Clan and a user of the Ten Shadows Technique, he is acknowledged by both Gojo and Sukuna. For much of the narrative, Megumi lives up to expectations with impressive abilities. However, after Sukuna takes over his body, he becomes more passive. His late return to action detracts from his journey and diminishes his likability.

With a plethora of wasted characters, Jujutsu Kaisen also has many questions left to answer before concluding.
