Globally celebrated for its impeccable combination of epic storytelling, deep lore, and humor, the record-breaking One Piece franchise is also renowned for Eiichiro Oda’s distinctive art style. One Piece first debuted in 1997, and Oda’s artistic approach evolved over time, just like the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates throughout their nautical journeys.
A highly imaginative artist, Oda frequently showcases his creativity through color spreads, which are vibrant, double-page illustrations featured at the start of certain chapters. These color spreads are particularly highlighted when Shonen Jump designates One Piece as a “Lead Color”for the magazine.
The illustrations can depict various themes but typically focus on group scenes of the Straw Hat Pirates, whom Oda enjoys portraying in relaxed, slice-of-life settings. Each color spread exemplifies Oda’s exceptional artistic talent and his affection for the characters he has created.

19) Chapter 100
To commemorate the milestone of reaching 100 chapters and the announcement of the anime adaptation, Eiichiro Oda illustrated the original five Straw Hats. To their rear, arranged from left to right, are Jinbe, Buggy, Galdino, Bentham, and Emporio Ivankov, presenting themselves like a band of ronin who temporarily banded together to achieve a shared goal: escaping Impel Down and reaching Marineford.
17) Chapter 394
In chapter 394’s cover, the Straw Hat Pirates are navigating jungle ruins. Luffy and Chopper are riding a tiger, led by Luffy, while the crew’s archeologist, Nico Robin, gently pets a dragon-like lizard.

12) Chapter 387
In chapter 387, Oda illustrated Luffy and Zoro jousting on horseback. Dressed as medieval knights, they charge at each other armed with long lances. Luffy narrowly avoids Zoro’s strike, while Zoro uses his shield to deflect Luffy’s attack.
Meanwhile, a comically armored Chopper waits patiently for his turn, possibly referring to the unfinished duel between Luffy and Zoro during the Arabasta Saga at Whiskey Peak.
11) Chapter 851
The color spread for chapter 851 was designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the One Piece manga. The illustration depicts the Straw Hat Pirates wearing blue and black outfits, elegantly positioned underwater amidst sea creatures.
Zoro and Franky are on the right, while Sanji and Brook appear on the left. In the center stand Nico Robin, Usopp, and Chopper, while Luffy and Nami command attention atop a magnificent armchair.
10) Chapter 790
Chapter 790’s spread depicts the Straw Hat Pirates adorned in outfits inspired by various real-world cultures. Luffy showcases traditional Japanese attire, Zoro, clad in typical German garb, enjoys a refreshing beer, while Nami embodies the spirit of an American cowgirl.
Sanji takes on the persona of a French Musketeer, Usopp shines as a Brazilian carnival dancer, Chopper dons a winter coat reminiscent of Inuit fashion, and Robin dazzles as a traditional Indian dancer. Franky stands out with a Chinese hairstyle and kung fu stance, while Brook sparkles like a British rock star.
9) Chapter 1094
The color spread for chapter 1094 pays homage to the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s pre-One Piece tale, Monsters. The protagonist of this one-shot story was Shimotsuki Ryuma, a legendary samurai from Wano.
Since Monsters is fully canon within the One Piece narrative, with Ryuma being Roronoa Zoro’s ancestor, Oda dedicated this artwork to the entire Shimotsuki lineage. In the foreground, Zoro unveils his new, formidable Haki-enabled form, emanating black lightning and green flames. Behind him stands a zombified Ryuma wielding his Black Blade, Shusui.
In the background, figures like Yasuie, Kozaburo, Koushirou, Kuina, Ushimaru, and his beloved companion Onimaru are visible. In the distance, a younger Ryuma looms over a flaming dragon, hinting at his legendary triumph over such a beast.
8) Chapter 693
Chapter 693’s color spread illustrates significant developments after the Punk Hazard Arc, effectively capturing the essence of the new era by featuring key protagonists.
The Straw Hat Pirates are prominently positioned alongside Trafalgar Law, Bepo, Shachi, Penguin, Kinemon, and Momonosuke. Surrounding them, intimidating figures like Big Mom, Scratchman Apoo, Kuzan “Aokiji” , Donquixote Doflamingo, Sakazuki “Akainu” , Jinbe, Eustass Kid, Shanks, Killer, Marshall D. Teach “Blackbeard” , Basil Hawkins, and Kaido are portrayed.
7) Chapter 1054
After their defeat during the Onigashima Raid, Kaido and Big Mom lost their Yonko titles, with Luffy and, amusingly, Buggy stepping up as the new Four Emperors.
The color spread for chapter 1054 immortalizes these new Yonko following the conclusion of the Wano Arc. From left to right, they are depicted as if approaching the readers directly: Buggy, “Red Hair” Shanks, Marshall D. Teach “Blackbeard” , and Monkey D. Luffy.
6) Chapter 1031
The spread for chapter 1031 centers around the second strongest members of significant groups and crews. Roronoa Zoro is the highlight for the Straw Hat Pirates, representing the crew’s strength.
Oda features Zoro as the Straw Hat representative, while Silvers Rayleigh stands for the Roger Pirates, Benn Beckman for the Red Hair Pirates, King for the Beasts Pirates, and Charlotte Katakuri for the Big Mom Pirates. Other notable figures include Killer for the Kid Pirates, Marco for the Whitebeard Pirates, Sabo for the Revolutionary Army, Shiryu for the Blackbeard Pirates, and Bepo for the Heart Pirates.
The One Piece title is displayed in green, Zoro’s signature color, and it includes a letter shaped like crossed swords, symbolizing Zoro’s Shimotsuki family heritage. These details enhance this elegant artwork, serving as a tribute to Zoro’s immense popularity among fans and his vital role as One Piece’s second main character.
5) Chapter 532
The Seven Warlords of the Sea are iconic characters within the franchise, so it’s fitting that Eiichiro Oda spotlighted them in chapter 532’s captivating color spread, showcasing their ensemble just before the Paramount War.
Dracule Mihawk, Donquixote Doflamingo, Bartholomew Kuma, and Boa Hancock exude an air of remoteness. Jinbe is shown in chains, reminiscent of his time in Impel Down, while Gecko Moria bears the scars of his Thriller Bark battle. Blackbeard occupies the position once held by Crocodile in this prominent lineup.
4) Chapter 446
The color spread for chapter 446 features the male Straw Hats dressed as Vikings, showcasing their warrior attire and weaponry. Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, and Franky present heroic stances, which makes this artwork one of Oda’s most stunning creations.
Given that the island of Elbaf and its inhabitants, the Giants, are steeped in Norse culture, this illustration might hint at the Straw Hats’ outfits for the forthcoming Elbaf Arc.
3) Chapter 699
In chapter 699, Oda captures the Straw Hat Pirates in a medieval court theme. Portraying Luffy as a king wearing a grand crown, Nami presents herself as his lady, potentially a queen or princess.
The remainder of the crew, dressed as medieval knights, surrounds them, with a green dragon adding to the fairy-tale ambiance.
2) Chapter 1088
As an executive producer of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda played a key role, and in chapter 1088’s color spread, he commemorated the main characters from Season 1.
Centered in the illustration are the original five Straw Hats—Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji—each executing their iconic moves. In the background, notable characters such as Arlong, Shanks, Mihawk, Koby, Garp, Buggy, and Kuro are represented. This spread, while simple, powerfully encapsulates the franchise’s essence.
1) Chapters 999 and 1000
One Piece achieved the remarkable milestone of surpassing 1000 chapters. To celebrate, Eiichiro Oda created an updated version of the color spread he illustrated for chapter 100. He split this new artwork between chapters 999 and 1000, creating a larger cohesive image when combined, showcasing the current Straw Hat crew reveling in a treasure party reminiscent of chapter 100’s cover.
This nostalgic spread evokes a profound sense of emotion for long-time fans, as Oda beautifully bridges the memories of countless chapters and years, connecting the past with the present as the series approaches its concluding arc.
