1. World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment

Despite facing some challenging periods in recent expansions, World of Warcraft’s reputation as a titan in the MMO genre is well-deserved, solidifying its place as the most famous MMO in history.

Our thoughts: Undoubtedly one of the most renowned MMORPGs on this list, World of Warcraft has held a prominent position in the gaming world since 2004. Even today, it draws in fans from across the globe with its unforgettable characters such as Alexstrasza, Khadgar, and Tyrande Whisperwind. With nine expansive expansions, players are immersed in a world of fantastical adventures, including epic dungeons, captivating storylines, challenging raids, intense open-world PvP, thrilling duels, and intense battlegrounds.

The class designs in WoW are widely considered to be among the best in gaming. Each class offers a variety of specializations that drastically alter the gameplay experience. While the game may heavily cater to those with ample free time to invest in grinding currencies, reputations, and other requirements, casual players can still enjoy exploring the vast world of Azeroth and discovering its many wonders.

Despite experiencing difficulties during the Shadowlands expansion, World of Warcraft found renewed hope with the release of its latest expansion, Dragonflight. The highly anticipated release of The War Within on August 26 promises to bring a new era of success and optimism for players. In addition, Blizzard’s current time-limited events make for an even more enticing time to join the game.

2. A Popular Online Role Playing Game

Final Fantasy 14 10th Anniversary Edition is the ideal way to prep for Dawntrail
Square Enix

What is it: Square Enix’s endeavor to incorporate the Final Fantasy universe into the MMORPG genre, resulting in an expansive and remarkable narrative-focused creation by the developer.

Initially: Upon its initial release in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV (commonly referred to as FFXIV) was met with negative reception from both audiences and critics. However, after a complete overhaul and shutdown of the game, it re-emerged in the summer of 2013 as A Realm Reborn, receiving critical acclaim and winning over fans.

The story of Final Fantasy XIV is an essential component of the game, and with four expansions to explore, there is a wealth of lore waiting to be discovered. Additionally, the upcoming expansion, Dawntrail, is scheduled to launch in July 2024. It will bring players to a fresh continent and introduce two new classes: the Viper and Pictomancer.

The game world of Eorzea is vast and offers players complete freedom in customizing their characters, allowing them to freely switch between the game’s 20 jobs and classes as desired.

In 2022, the 6.2 patch for FFXIV, titled Buried Memory, introduced a new area known as Island Sanctuary. This location is perfect for players seeking a more laid-back and leisurely experience, with similarities to popular games such as Animal Crossing and Disney Dreamlight Valley. Here, players can construct, gather, and cultivate their own tranquil paradise.

While there are still options available for PvP players, it is widely known within the community that the main emphasis is on PVE content. The game features stunning sound and art design, making it the perfect time to dive into Final Fantasy XIV.

EVE Online

An enormous ship in the orbit of a planet in Eve Online
CCP Games

EVE Online is a sandbox-style MMO set thousands of years in the future, with its world shaped solely by the community.

Our opinion: Among all MMOs, EVE Online stands out for its unparalleled depth of simulation. The game revolves around exploration, trading, and warfare, as players strive to establish their presence in the expansive universe. While those seeking a traditional MMO experience that allows them to explore the virtual world as their character may be let down, EVE Online offers a plethora of features that will leave any sandbox enthusiast dizzy with excitement.

As you play the game, you assume the role of a Capsuleer, a pilot who is able to live forever and control their ship through the use of neural technology from a capsule located within the spacecraft. Additionally, there are more than 350 ships to discover and personalize, each with its own unique purpose in the game’s universe.

With a total of 7,000 solar systems to discover, collectively known as ‘New Eden,’ four empires rule over them: the Amarr, the Caldari State, the Gallente Federation, and the Minmatar Republic. Each empire has its own distinct lore and background. There are also uncharted territories waiting to be explored and uncovered beyond the main routes.

Throughout your journey, you will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of professions that will alter your gameplay in New Eden. These options include Explorer, Industrialist, Enforcer, and Soldier of Fortune. Additionally, each of these professions leads to different specializations. For example, Enforcers can specialize as either Mission Runners or Bounty Hunters, while Soldiers of Fortune can pursue a career as a Pirate or join a Faction Militia.

The Equinox expansion has recently been released, bringing with it a range of updates such as the addition of new structures and a ship customization tool called the WeINR. With a plethora of new resources aimed at simplifying the process of welcoming new players, now is the perfect opportunity to embark on a voyage into the depths of outer space.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls Online header
ZeniMax Online Studios

What is it: The massively multiplayer online (MMO) installment of the widely acclaimed Elder Scrolls franchise by Bethesda. It incorporates various elements from the single-player games and introduces them in a multiplayer environment.

If you’re seeking to experience one of the most renowned story-based RPG series with a group, The Elder Scrolls Online is the perfect choice. Over time, ZeniMax has continuously expanded the vast world of Tamriel for players to discover. Currently, it stands as the largest Elder Scrolls game, granting access to renowned locations such as Morrowind, High Isle, Summerset Isle, Elsweyr, and more.

This Elder Scrolls title has all the expected features, from the Khajiit to a highly immersive storyline to explore, along with the presence of guilds like The Dark Brotherhood, making it a game that has something to offer for every player.

ESO’s combat differs from that of FFXIV and World of Warcraft in that it is not solely reliant on tab-targeting. Instead, it incorporates systems that allow for more player involvement and control in combat. Similar to the mainline games, players have the ability to freely aim and move around the battlefield. By holding down the attack button, a heavy attack can be executed, or a well-timed block can be used to avoid incoming attacks from enemies.

ESO offers incredible player housing options and the flexibility to customize classes to your exact liking (such as a warrior who can also cast spells). This allows you to create a one-of-a-kind character that truly reflects your preferences. Plus, with numerous expansions available to explore, there’s no reason not to give ESO a chance.

5. Old School RuneScape

cover art for old school runescape
Jagex

What does it entail: A revival of an earlier era in RuneScape’s history, featuring a continuously running world and numerous RPG elements, it has become the most widely played version of the game.

Our opinion: Old School Runescape was first launched in 2013 and received a warm welcome from the community. It was created as an option for players who wanted to experience the game as it was in its earlier days. At first, it closely resembled the 2007 version of RuneScape. However, over time, the community and developer Jagex have collaborated to introduce a plethora of new content.

The game encompasses all the typical elements of a traditional RPG, including skills that players can advance. Combat skills determine a character’s effectiveness in battles, while Gathering skills enable players to gather raw materials. Artisan skills encompass a range of production abilities, from cooking to smithing.

Despite its basic combat and point-and-click input mechanics, OSRS remains an easy game to recommend due to its enormous player base and lively, bustling worlds. The major city centers are always bustling with players trading, grouping up, and making new friends, embodying the essence of what an MMO should be.

6. Guild Wars 2

guild wars 2 steam release date
ArenaNet

What is it: An MMO that is centered around storytelling and features a quick pace, developed by a committed team that consistently delivers updates to the game’s extensive range of content.

Our opinion: Despite being often overshadowed by WoW, Guild Wars 2 is still considered one of the top MMOs currently available. While it may not have the most impressive graphics, Guild Wars stands out with its innovative gameplay mechanics and engaging story. Additionally, the game is incredibly user-friendly, so new players or returning ones won’t feel at a disadvantage, even if they join in 2023 or after taking a break.

The process of character creation offers a variety of options that have an impact on both minor and major aspects of gameplay. These choices range from selecting your initial armor to determining your overall experience with the game’s main content. For instance, you may have grown up as a member of the Human nobility, or you could have found yourself in a drunken stupor at a Norn celebration (believe it or not, this is a legitimate option!).

In addition to its expansions, the game also regularly releases new content known as Seasons, referred to as the “Living World.”These updates introduce new quests, storylines, and areas to the game world. Guild Wars 2’s PvP is highly accessible, satisfying, and enjoyable to participate in. In World vs World, you and numerous players from your world face off against rival worlds in an ongoing struggle to conquer castles and keeps.

World of Warcraft: Classic

Deathwing flies over Azeroth in Cataclysm
Blizzard Entertainment

A nostalgic and heartwarming experience within a thriving community, it offers a return to the earliest days of World of Warcraft.

Our understanding: Describing Classic World of Warcraft to non-players can be challenging nowadays due to the various versions available. One of these versions is Classic Era, where the servers remain fixed on the final stage of the game that existed before the launch of the first expansion.

In addition, there is Cataclysm Classic, where the servers are currently advancing through the events of Deathwing’s arrival in the game’s third expansion. Lastly, there is the Season of Discovery, a limited-time experience featuring new abilities, activities, and quests, all taking place within the Vanilla universe.

Everything mentioned above is completely free (as long as you have an active WoW subscription) and offers a fantastic glimpse into past iterations of the most significant MMO of all time. The community is bustling and there are endless possibilities to discover, so why hesitate?

Warframe

voruna warframe

Description: Assume the role of a member of an ancient warrior race in a memorable sci-fi universe and engage in battles against rival factions.

Our opinion: Amongst the world of free-to-play games, Warframe stands out as one of the most impressive. It transports players into the role of a Tenno, a highly skilled ancient warrior who has been awakened from a long period of suspended animation in the distant future of Earth. The game takes place within our own solar system, where our characters are immediately thrust into battles against the Grineer, Corpus, Sentients, Infested, and the Corrupted.

Our interactions with these factions are the foundation for the majority of the game’s storyline. The ongoing narrative, which is regularly updated, is captivating to say the least, and Digital Extremes has crafted an unparalleled living universe.

The titular Warframes provide character customization, granting our character unique powers and abilities. This system acts as a pseudo-class system, allowing players to fulfill different roles such as long-range combat, support, or leadership.

Warframe’s main source of strength lies in its emphasis on movement during gameplay. The speed at which players can traverse through maps and levels is incredibly fast, featuring a diverse range of weapons such as katana-style blades and highly powerful guns. If you are a fan of Destiny 2 but find its lack of social features frustrating, then Warframe will definitely suit your preferences.

9. Lord of the Rings Online

Description: Offering the quintessential Middle-earth MMO experience, Lord of the Rings Online encompasses all of the elements one would anticipate in a game based on the renowned literary world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Our opinion: First released in 2007, The Lord of the Rings Online remains a massive game that fully immerses players in the vast world of Middle-earth. While its graphics may have aged in the 15 years since its initial release, it is still an incredibly impressive feat that accurately captures the essence of the beloved LotR books and films.

In 2010, the game implemented a free-to-play model, allowing players to access the majority of the MMO’s content without any monetary commitment. However, the latest expansions, such as the Corsairs of Umbar, come at a cost of £30.99. Additionally, there is a VIP subscription option which offers benefits such as extra inventory space, access to ‘Legendary Servers’, and daily XP bonuses for players.

With a variety of options including seven races and eleven classes, ranging from High Elves to Stout-Axes and even Beornings, you have the ability to create your ideal fantasy character. For those interested in PvP, there is a PvMP (Monster Play) mode available where you can battle against other players who have taken on the role of a monster.

Undoubtedly focused on PvE, the game also provides a welcoming environment for those seeking to delve into the virtual world of Middle-earth. Drawing inspiration from the works of J.R.R. and Christopher Tolkien, it offers one of the best fantasy stories in the gaming world and is highly recommended for anyone looking to get involved, especially with its accessible entry point.

10. Best Tips for Playing Black Desert Online

black desert online bdo warrior women with blond hair and shield looks over her shoulder at camera
Pearl Abyss

About: Renowned for its stunning graphics and intricately designed universe, Black Desert Online stands as one of the most expansive and comprehensive MMOs available in the present day.

Our opinion: Pearl Abyss’ Black Desert Online was already considered one of the most visually stunning MMORPGs available. In 2018, the game reached even greater heights with the introduction of Black Desert Remastered, which raised the bar even further with improved visuals and audio enhancements.

BDO’s biggest draw is its expansive, unrestricted world, allowing players to freely pursue their desired activities at any time. While the game’s plot may be complex and challenging to decipher, the multitude of additional features ensures a never-ending supply of entertainment.

Despite this, there is a significant amount of grinding involved, which may make casual players feel inundated with the sheer amount of content to complete. Along with traditional combat, there are various life skills to master, such as farming and hiring workers to assist with labor, owning properties, fishing, and becoming a merchant by trading goods through different routes for potential profit.

In Black Desert, players have endless options when it comes to customizing their characters. This includes the ability to manipulate every detail of their adventurer, such as the texture and length of their hair. Additionally, players can collect free items through redeemable codes, allowing them to save up for future releases and enhance their adventure.

The History of RuneScape

An image of Jagex's Runescape
Jagex

The updated version of the popular MMO includes a variety of modern features that may attract a younger demographic.

Our opinion: As one of the original MMOs, RuneScape has undergone significant transformations since its first launch, including expansion of content and visual upgrades (with more in the works for the future!).

The game is fully compatible with PC, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices, and can be easily downloaded and played on any of these platforms. Additionally, it offers the convenience of cross-saving, enabling you to continue your game progress on any device.

In comparison to its more old-fashioned counterpart in OSRS, the most noticeable distinction is its accessibility. Those who are new to the genre or the game are likely to find this version to be much more forgiving, with a wide range of content that can be tackled at a pace suitable for any schedule. Unlike some of its direct competitors, RuneScape requires less of a grind to get started and is therefore very welcoming to casual players.

In addition, RuneScape offers a vast array of skills that influence your approach and interactions within the realm of Gielinor. While certain skills such as Farming, Invention, and Thieving are exclusive to members, there are more than 15 skills that are accessible to free players, ranging from Woodcutting to Fishing.

The game’s overall enhancements and expansions, combined with Jagex’s appreciation for some of the more basic elements from the past, make it a free MMO that everyone should experience.

12. New World

New World Heart of Madness
Amazon Game Studios

Amazon Game Studios’ New World MMORPG revolves around the colonization of America, where players embark on a journey to a mysterious land filled with secrets waiting to be unraveled.

The world of the game is greatly enhanced by its 1600s setting, which seamlessly blends distinct armor and aesthetics with a high-fantasy atmosphere to provide players with an extraordinary gaming experience. In this game, you must face off against NPC Humans who have been tainted by the mysterious and malevolent power emanating from the island of Aeternum.

As you delve deeper into the intricacies of the game’s lore, you will have the opportunity to participate in dungeons, large-scale PvP battles involving 25 to 50 players, and a unique PvPvE mode where you must eliminate foes and gather resources to gain control for your team.

Despite a decrease in player count in recent months, New World still offers plenty of variety with its skills focused on non-combat activities. The game also provides diverse combat options through its range of weapons, allowing players to experiment with different skills and attributes. Even if you prefer to play solo, there is still enough content in the current game to make it worth trying out.

Adventure Awaits: Lost Ark

Lost Ark Slayer
Lost Ark

What is Lost Ark: Lost Ark is a unique MMO ARPG that offers players the opportunity to engage in battles with enemies in a visually stunning, isometric world. It is a rare gem that combines elements of games like Diablo with the popular multiplayer genre.

Initially released in Korea in 2018, Lost Ark finally made its way to Western shores in early 2022. The game offers six base character classes, each with its own distinct playstyle. Additionally, there are ‘Advanced’ versions of these classes (as well as many yet to be released) that allow for even more customization in your gameplay. With seven diverse continents to discover, the opportunity to sail the open seas, and a plethora of dungeons, quests, and PvP battles to engage in, Lost Ark offers endless options for players to enjoy.

In addition, you can upgrade each of your abilities to create a character that aligns with your individual style. The game also offers a variety of non-combat skills to train and enhance. In Arkesia, you will have the freedom to explore, gather resources, and engage in battles to your heart’s desire, providing a distinctive twist to the traditional MMORPG experience.

Despite a decline in its Western audience, Lost Ark remains a game of notable depth that firmly establishes it as one of the top games in its genre. Its world offers a refreshing departure from the typically dark and grim style seen in titles such as Diablo, providing players with a more diverse experience. While the gameplay loop may not suit all tastes, Lost Ark is a fantastic game for players of all skill levels and availability to immerse themselves in.

14. The Epic World of Star Wars: The Old Republic

The premier MMO set in the Star Wars universe is known for its full Jedi experience, featuring iconic locations and characters.

Fans of BioWare games such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age will feel comfortable playing this free-to-play MMO. With elements like the ability to romance companions and fully-voiced NPCs (including your own character!), SWTOR offers RPG features that surpass those of other top games on this list.

“The game can be played up to level 60 without any cost, and players can also enjoy the first two expansions without paying additional fees. There is a plethora of content to explore before considering a subscription, although there may be some limitations. However, there is still a vast amount of activities available to keep players entertained.”

Each of the 8 classes in the game offers a unique storyline to delve into, and in true Star Wars fashion, players have the ability to align themselves with either the Light Side or the Dark Side. This choice comes with visual alterations as players progress towards one end of the spectrum or the other.

15. Fallout 76

A shopkeeper from the Fallout 76 Wastelanders update
Bethesda Entertainment

Bethesda’s renowned Fallout series takes on the MMO genre for the first time, inviting players to venture through Appalachia a mere 25 years after the devastation of nuclear warfare.

Despite experiencing one of the roughest launches in recent history, Fallout 76 has seen a significant improvement in recent months. When the game was initially released, it lacked basic features such as NPCs, leaving players feeling unsatisfied. Additionally, the high prices in the cash shop only added to the negative experience.

Following that, Bethesda has released significant updates and expansions that completely transformed the game. The wilderness of Appalachia is now populated with NPCs, and players can team up to complete major quests. The game now includes prominent factions from the single-player titles, and with the addition of Expeditions, players can also visit iconic locations such as The Pitt.

The game Fallout 76 is abundant with one-of-a-kind weapons and armor, and features a crafting system that truly immerses players into the role of a Wasteland Wanderer. Constant updates and additions to the game have solidified its significance within the series, making it a must-play for devoted fans.

16. Star Citizen

Star Citizen gameplay
Cloud Imperium Games

Star Citizen, the most heavily funded game in history, is a vast space sandbox that combines elements from multiple genres to create an immense gaming experience.

Our view: Star Citizen has been a source of controversy since its inception. Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 that raised $2 million, the game has surpassed its original 2014 release date and there is still no sign of a full debut. Incredibly, as of May 2024, the game has raised an astonishing $700 million and continues to grow its overall content.

Star Citizen has been designed to have three separate modules or modes, each offering a unique gameplay experience. The first module, Hangar, enables players to interact with their personal ships and explore them. The second, Arena Commander, is a space combat simulator where players can engage in battles against either AI or other players. Lastly, Star Marine serves as a ground combat simulator within the same game world.

All three of those modules are also accessible in a unified persistent universe, which can be viewed as the core game and a remarkable technological feat. While switching between the three game states may sometimes encounter minor glitches, Star Citizen offers something for every player with the dedication to fully engage in its universe.

Blade & Soul

Two characters clash in Blade & Soul
NCSoft

Blade & Soul is a somewhat lesser-known addition to the genre, blending Wuxia-inspired combat with an expansive open world and a memorable cast of characters.

Our opinion: Despite being released in 2012, Blade & Soul remains one of the top free-to-play MMORPGs on the market. Its captivating storyline, extensive character customization, and adrenaline-fueled combat system that allows for impressive combo moves make it a must-try game.

The narrative combines elements of martial arts and magic, following your character’s journey from a novice student to a warrior seeking vengeance against the world’s malevolent forces.

Blade & Soul offers an overwhelming selection of 14 classes, each paired with a specific race. Despite the restriction of race-locking, there is still an extensive range of options available for players to tailor their gameplay experience.

In September 2021, the game finally received the long-awaited Unreal Engine 4 update. This brought the title up to date, and there are many appealing aspects about Blade & Soul, although some may not be fond of its highly stylized approach.

18. Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous rover
Frontier Developments

Description: This is a hardcore space flight simulation that takes place in a 1:1 scale replica of the Milky Way galaxy. The game features a persistent universe that is shaped by player actions and decisions.

Our initial thoughts: Leading up to their individual releases, there was a lot of talk about a potential rivalry between Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky. However, looking back, it seems like a rather frivolous comparison. While Elite puts players in charge of a starship and some funds and lets them explore, it follows a typical structure with various missions and tasks for players to earn more currency and upgrade their ships.

Up to this point, there is nothing out of the ordinary. What truly sets Elite apart is its incredible capacity to immerse players in the game’s universe and make them feel invested in its future, all without ever leaving the confines of their ship. While the recent Horizons update does now offer the opportunity to land on and discover planets (a great addition to the game), it remains centered around traveling and discovering the wonders of the cosmos. While it may not have the potential for grandiose encounters like EVE, it is still a fantastic community to be a part of.

The City of Neverwinter

A huge dragon in Neverwinter

Description: This is the top MMO game that takes place in the various worlds featured in Dungeons & Dragons, filled with all the fantastical elements one would anticipate from Faerûn and beyond.

Despite being overshadowed by other MMOs, Neverwinter has endured its fair share of challenges over the years. However, it remains a highly commendable game with its fast-paced and polished combat, notable encounters, and well-crafted storyline.

Despite a few caveats, the world of Neverwinter remains bright and stunning, drawing inspiration from both its genre and tabletop roots. This has been a consistent aspect since 2024.

Despite having been around for some time, the game is starting to show its age. While there are other MMOs that have been in existence for longer, most of them have undergone visual updates in some capacity. Furthermore, the player base is not as robust as desired, making it challenging to progress through group activities at a satisfactory rate. Lastly, the in-game cash shop may come across as predatory due to its inclusion of pseudo-loot boxes and other randomized items.

Despite this, there is still a great deal of satisfaction to be found in the game without the added stress of a highly competitive environment.

20. Star Trek Online: A Popular Sci-Fi MMO

Kligons meet the federation in Star Trek Online

Description: Star Trek Online offers players an expansive open universe with large-scale space combat. It includes all the expected factions, ships, and details from the beloved sci-fi franchise.

Our opinion: Next year marks the 15th anniversary of Star Trek Online. While it may show its age at times, there is still a wealth of entertainment to be found. The game takes place three decades after the events of the film Star Trek: Nemesis, where the once strong alliance between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire has fallen apart.

Amidst this setting, players are tasked with taking on the role of a captain and navigating the vastness of space. Star Trek Online offers two main gameplay options: piloting a ship and engaging in battles, or beaming down to a planet’s surface to explore. Within the latter, the class system becomes relevant, as your chosen setup will directly impact your effectiveness as an individual.

Despite its halcyon days being in the past, Star Trek Online is still a game worth visiting, with refreshingly lengthy space battles that require strategic thinking and well-timed use of weapons and shields. The game also boasts an intriguing narrative structure, making it a worthwhile experience.

Albion Online

A gathering of players in Albion Online

What is Albion Online: Albion Online is a Sandbox MMORPG with a strong fantasy setting. The game includes a completely player-generated economy and does not have a traditional class system.

Our perspective: Upon further contemplation, it becomes increasingly clear that Albion Online defies many conventions of the MMORPG genre in a seemingly sensible manner. Rather than implementing a class system, the game allows players to start with a clean slate, with their character’s abilities and skills determined by the equipment they choose to wear. This refreshing approach is just one of the many pleasant surprises that await players when first diving into Albion.

Despite its seemingly relaxed and cozy art style, Albion’s PvP encounters are surprisingly intense. If you prefer PvE gameplay, this game may not be for you. However, it’s a fantastic option for those looking for a casual game to play at their leisure. While there are occasional instances of pay-to-win elements, this game truly shines as a laid-back pursuit.

22. Diablo IV

diablo 4 loot
Blizzard Entertainment

What is it: Blizzard’s latest installment in the ARPG genre continues to uphold the series’ reputation as the most famous and renowned in its history, building upon its already established strong foundations.

Our opinion: Despite facing criticism since its launch last year, Diablo 4 remains a phenomenal game. The main storyline follows Lilith, the primary antagonist, as players progress up to level 100. However, her father Mephisto will soon take over this role in the upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion, making it an opportune time to join in before its release.

The game currently has five playable classes, and a sixth is set to be released as part of Vessel of Hatred. The gameplay emphasizes the importance of skill and understanding your character, and there is a significant amount of difficulty scaling to keep players engaged for a long time.

Despite possibly pushing the boundaries of what can be considered an MMO, Diablo still clearly incorporates RPG elements and its story remains one of its strongest aspects. While the developer has faced challenges in balancing classes and playstyles, continuous improvements are being made and it remains one of the healthiest and most active games on this list.

23. Trove

A player swings through the air in Trove
gamigo US inc.

What is it: An MMO adventure inspired by Minecraft where players can freely battle and construct, either by themselves or with a large group of companions.

Our opinion: Trove offers enjoyable and wholesome entertainment for the whole family. It draws inspiration from Minecraft in its visuals and building mechanics. With a diverse selection of 17 classes, some of which are unique to the game, such as Candy Barbarians and Chloromancers, players can expect to have a new and unfamiliar experience in the genre.

Despite this, Trove remains accessible for both solo and group play, and offers numerous opportunities to make new acquaintances. A standout aspect is the ability for players to create their own gear, as anyone can submit designs for potential inclusion in the game. This has led to a vast array of gear options to discover, and endless possibilities for character customization.

If you often find yourself criticizing the absence of player housing in popular MMOs, you will have no complaints with Trove. This game offers the opportunity to construct your own personal home, brick by brick, called a cornerstone. Your cornerstone can then be placed in designated areas in different regions, ensuring that your customized house is always with you. Some players have even taken it a step further by creating entire worlds to reside in. Trove sets itself apart from other games in its genre by providing a tranquil and unique experience.

24. Dune: Awakening

A sandworm emerges in Dune Awakening
Funcom

Description: This game is the first MMO set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe, but it is set in an alternate reality where the main character, Paul Atreides, does not exist.

Our thoughts: The Dune films have sparked a newfound excitement for Frank Herbert’s universe, and Dune: Awakening seems like the ideal game to fulfill that craving. Taking place on Arrakis, it offers a vast storyline that incorporates beloved characters and factions from the renowned literary series. The game will also assist in fleshing out these characters from the books by allowing players to incorporate them into their own personal journeys.

In theory, the Bene Gesserit will impart certain abilities to their students, while Mentats possess a unique set of knowledge to share. This could potentially create a class system that rewards both hybrid-build players and those who specialize in a particular skill.

The game is currently in its beta stage, with no confirmed release date. Funcom is currently open for beta sign-ups, so if you’re interested, there will be a chance to join in on the action soon.

Tibia

Tibia Splash art
CipSoft

What is it: Tibia is a beloved and enduring example of the MMORPG genre, boasting a 2D tile-based world set in a captivating fantasy realm.

Our perspective: It is rare for a game to remain popular 25 years after its release, and even more uncommon for it to have a daily player count in the tens of thousands. Tibia is one such game, with its elements of killing monsters for loot and wealth having become common in the genre. However, the 2D art style has come full circle and is now considered refreshing once again.

Despite its charming exterior, the experience of playing this game can be brutal and grueling. Death is a common occurrence and the game does not hesitate to punish you for it. In fact, if you die too many times, you will be sent back to the rookie island where you started the game. This may feel like a complete restart and can be tough for first-time players. However, the fact that many players still return to the game despite these challenging aspects is a testament to its quality.

26. Peace of God

Soldiers stand ready in Pax Dei
Mainframe Industries

What kind of game is it? It is a social sandbox MMO that takes inspiration from medieval myths and legends.

Entering Steam Early Access in June 2024, Pax Dei has captured a significant amount of interest. At first glance, it appears to meet all the necessary criteria. Its concept is intriguing: a medieval world where mythical creatures are an unquestionable part of daily existence.

The expansive world is characterized by various locations for gathering and creating, dangerous zones for adventuring and overcoming, and spaces for players to establish their own residences. It includes a comprehensive housing system that considers structural stability, allowing for endless possibilities within the constraints of physics.

The combat system is also fast-paced and thrilling, highlighting the importance of building a community and progressing through the game world together. The developers have planned for extensive collaboration with the player base during the development process, making it a great opportunity to join from the beginning.

Palia – A Beautiful Place to Visit

Someone flying through the air in Palia
Singularity 6 Corporation

This MMO combines elements of Disney Dreamlight Valley and Animal Crossing, with a focus on building a strong community and promoting personal growth.

If you’re seeking thrilling battles or complex skill systems, Palia may not be the right game for you. However, for fans of relaxing simulators, it could be a dream come true. As one of the newer games on this list, it offers a shared world where players can cultivate their own home plots in a peaceful environment.

The game features a plot system that allows players to fully customize their own housing and claim a piece of land. It offers a wide range of farming and land utilization mechanics, as well as opportunities for hunting and crafting. While it can be played alone, the MMO aspects of this game make it unique compared to other life and colony simulation games. Additionally, it is free-to-play, making it easy for players to jump in and give it a try.

28. Rift

gamigo US Inc.

This is a free-to-play MMO that includes a complete package of dungeons, raids, and epic battles against massive, fantastical creatures.

Our opinion: Although RIFT takes a more unified approach to creating an MMO, it excels at what it sets out to do. Set in the world of Telara, it offers many of the traditional elements that seasoned players have come to anticipate from the genre.

Despite occasional lack of inspiration, the gameplay remains enjoyable and the game’s class system presents a unique and intriguing way to assign player roles. The game has five primary classes, also known as “callings.”

The variation arises when players start constructing within their designated roles, as the game offers complete freedom. Warriors have the ability to use magic while Mages can excel in close combat. This open-ended approach greatly enhances an otherwise well-made MMO, making it a joy to explore.

29. Dofus

Greed

Description: This is a tactical, turn-based MMORPG that takes place in a high fantasy world. Players have the option to create either free or paid accounts.

The term Dofus is used to describe the eggs of dragons in the game. These highly sought-after items are the root of many conflicts and add an enjoyable element to the welcoming and enjoyable game.

The turn-based combat in 2D is surprisingly well done. Although it may not reach the level of excellence seen in other games of this genre, it still offers plenty of entertainment for beginners. The art style of the game is reminiscent of the popular browser games from the 2000s, and the decision to go back to that design approach feels oddly appropriate.

The most notable aspect of Dofus is its paid version, as free users may frequently encounter obstacles that hinder their gameplay experience.

30. Romans: Age of Caesar

Firefly Studios

What is it: A collaborative, large-scale strategy MMO that allows players to take control of the Roman Empire and oversee its growth during its peak of power.

Our opinion: Despite receiving Mixed reviews on Steam, it would be remiss not to mention arguably the most eccentric game in the entire genre. This leisurely city builder transports players back to the most renowned empire in history, allowing them to develop and enlarge their settlement.

While the game can technically be played alone, it heavily emphasizes collaborating with other players for success. The graphics may appear outdated and the gameplay may have flaws, but it’s still worth giving it a chance if you’re even remotely curious about a cooperative city-building experience. Is it on par with Firefly Studios’ top games? Definitely not. However, as a free-to-play option, it offers a unique glimpse into the potential of this genre.
