Minecraft boasts an impressive array of 64 biomes across its three dimensions, ranging from vast oceans to towering forests and majestic mountains. However, not all biomes hold equal appeal. Some exhibit a lack of distinctive features and charm. In this article, we will explore several biomes that would greatly benefit from enhancements in the forthcoming Minecraft 1.22 update. While I will refrain from discussing the End biomes—an area universally acknowledged for its need for improvement—let’s dive into the highlights.
1. Forest
The traditional forest biome ranks first on the list due to its ubiquity and lack of intrigue. Players often find themselves spawning in or adjacent to a forest, only to encounter an expanse of trees, occasional wildlife, and scattered flowers. While this setup serves basic gameplay needs, the visual experience falls flat.
In contrast, the Bedrock Edition introduces elements like fallen logs, moss carpets, and mushrooms that significantly elevate the realism of forest biomes. Adding tree stumps and textured tree trunks featuring natural holes could further enhance this biome’s appeal. Additionally, incorporating varied ground types such as podzol, moss, or rooted dirt would enrich the biome’s visual diversity.
Improving the ambiance with lively sound effects—like chirping birds—alongside intricate details, such as dewdrops and insects on the grass, could create a much more engaging atmosphere. Since the forest’s wildlife is already plentiful, introducing new mobs may not be necessary at this time.
2. Desert
The desert biome, known for its barren landscape, is in dire need of additional features to enrich its gameplay experience. This biome was a contender in the 2018 biome vote, and Mojang developers provided valuable insights for improvements.
A key enhancement would be the introduction of palm trees, a much-needed natural plant counterpart. Introducing meerkats as playful, animated mobs could also breathe life into the arid environment.
Furthermore, updating cactus textures with colorful flower tops would enhance visual interest, while providing new variants of sand blocks and adding a variety of desiccated and thriving plants would diversify the biome’s ecosystem. Implementing distinct audio effects that reflect heat and regional soundscapes would also elevate the player’s experience.
3. Oceans
With the exception of warm oceans, many ocean biomes currently feel uninspired and should be revamped in the Minecraft 1.22 update. Their striking similarities and lack of exciting characteristics detract from the underwater adventure.
To enhance the gameplay, introducing more plant-like blocks would add vibrant colors and diverse life forms, including unique species of fish and marine mammals. Additionally, the deep ocean variations could utilize a colder, more immersive vignette effect, giving players a sense of the chilly waters without inflicting damage. Conversely, frozen ocean biomes could implement slow freezing damage over time, adding an extra layer of challenge.
4. Mushroom Island
The Mushroom Island, or mushroom fields biome, stands out as one of Minecraft’s rarest environments, yet it holds untapped potential for enhancement in the 1.22 update. Expanding the variety of mycelium blocks and introducing new mushrooms that grow on their sides could vastly improve this biome’s appeal.
While the usually peaceful Mushroom Island sees few hostile mobs, incorporating subtle cues indicating their presence would add a sense of mystery. Furthermore, integrating glowing features, such as shroomlights or a new light-emitting plant block, would provide captivating aesthetics. Lastly, cultivating small lakes or pools amid the mycelium terrain would enhance this unique biome.
5. Windswept Hills Biomes
Rounding off our list are the windswept hills and their variations, including windswept gravelly hills and windswept forests. Despite their rarity and charm, these biomes are somewhat lackluster and could greatly benefit from additional features.
Though versatile in terrain—with cliffs, peaks, valleys, and overhangs—diversifying the ground blocks and introducing stone, cobblestone, and mossy cobblestone boulders of various sizes could enliven the landscape. Adding unique plants and even potential new mobs, such as bears, would further enhance the dynamism of these biomes.
These are my top picks for biomes in Minecraft that I believe warrant improvements in the upcoming 1.22 update. While many more biomes could benefit from upgrades, these selections stand out for their potential to enhance gameplay and immersion. What are your views on which biome needs immediate attention?
