Top 50 Shooting Games

Everyone is familiar with the thrill of a virtual firefight, but which shooting games stand out as the greatest of all time?

Since the early days of arcade gaming to the rise of home consoles, the shooter genre has always been highly favored by gamers. The appeal lies in the adrenaline rush of emerging victorious in a battle royale or nailing a precise headshot in an FPS. Few other genres can provide the same instant gratification as shooters do.

Undoubtedly, the genre’s widespread appeal has resulted in a saturation of lackluster titles that do not merit your attention. So, how can you identify which games are truly worth your time? Luckily, in the spirit of Gamescom and our generosity, we have taken on the task for you. Our team of specialists has meticulously curated a list of the greatest shooters in gaming history.

We have discussed a wide range of games, from timeless classics to recent gems. However, before we proceed, we would like to make a brief statement. Our selections are not restricted to only first-person shooters. Although this may be considered a contentious choice, when compiling a list of the top games, it is important to not confine oneself to a single sub-genre. So don’t hesitate, soldier, get moving!

50. Portal (2007)

A scene from Portal
Valve

Synopsis: In this game, players take on the role of Chell, who is trapped inside the Aperture Science facility and subjected to experiments by the antagonist AI, GLaDOS. Throughout the game, players must complete a series of challenges and attempt to escape, using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, also known as the Portal Gun, to solve tasks of different levels of difficulty.

The reason for our admiration: Portal blends elements of a shooter game with intricate puzzles, creating a unique and unconventional adventure. The game’s clever use of physics, dynamics, and design challenges players to think creatively in order to complete their missions, while also providing an engrossing overarching storyline that has captivated many fans.

While plotline is not typically a defining aspect of a good shooter, Portal defies this convention with its perfectly executed design. Despite not being a traditional shooter, Portal serves as a prime example of how a game can break away from genre norms.

Time Crisis (1995)

A screenshot from Time Crisis
Namco

What it’s about: Time Crisis puts you in the shoes of the brave “One Man Army” Richard Miller as he embarks on a dangerous mission to thwart the plans of the malevolent Sherudo. Why we like it: If you haven’t spent countless hours playing Time Crisis at the arcade, can you really say you had a memorable childhood? This classic light gun shooter has it all – engaging gameplay, unique mechanics (who could forget that foot pedal?), and formidable bosses to test your skills. While some may find the gameplay a bit basic compared to modern games, it’s guaranteed that you’ll be too immersed in taking down Sherudo’s army to even notice.

48. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: A Classic First-Person Shooter Video Game

A screenshow from Return to Castle Wolfstein
Id Software

Summary: As World War 2 nears its end, the Nazis resort to using black magic in a desperate attempt to reverse their losses. In order to thwart their nefarious plot, the Allies send in Agent One and Captain B.J. Blazkowicz to infiltrate Castle Wolfstein.

Why it stands out: Return to Castle Wolfenstein is an exceptional supernatural FPS. While its campaign mode may not have been enough to earn it a spot on this list, it truly shines in multiplayer mode. The game is expertly balanced, enjoyable to play, and incredibly addicting (Many a school day was lost to this game back in the day).

Gears of War 2

The cast of Gears of War 2
Epic Games

The challenge for Gears of War 2 was to live up to its predecessor, but it successfully raised the stakes and took the series’ gritty and spectacular feel to even greater heights. It is an action-packed journey with enough meaningful character moments to keep you engaged.

We appreciate Gears of War 2 because it avoids the common problem of sequels being exact replicas of their predecessors. While it maintains the same core mechanics, Gears 2 introduces significant improvements and advancements to the series.

The series has been enhanced by the introduction of Horde, as well as the inclusion of a strong competitive multiplayer mode and a fully cooperative campaign. Additionally, the main story features a memorable moment where the player is devoured by a massive worm, a scene that has yet to be surpassed in the series.

Despite being released during the 360 era, Gears 2 is one of many games that has been forgotten over time and is deserving of the remaster treatment. Despite its initial reception in 2008, with a cliffhanger ending and a rocky launch, the game has aged gracefully.

Video Game: Crysis 2 (2011)

Art from Crysis 2
Electronic Arts

Synopsis: In continuation of the 2007 release, Crysis 2 centers around the swift collapse of society. The extraterrestrial foes, who previously launched a sudden assault on specific countries, have come back for a full-scale invasion that puts the entire world at risk. Equipped with the advanced Nanosuit 2 armor and extensive combat training, a super soldier is humanity’s final hope for survival.

Why we enjoy it: While the first Crysis may have been primarily a showcase of technological advancements, its sequel puts more emphasis on gameplay. It was easily the most visually impressive FPS of its time, with intricate details that fully immerse players in the lush environments, industrial complexes, and alien warships. As our main character, Prophet, utilizes the Nanosuit 2’s various abilities, such as Cloak and Armor modes, he can adapt to different situations and overcome challenging odds. Additionally, the ability to customize weapons on-the-fly adds an extra level of excitement and strategy to combat against the alien threat in Crysis 2.

45, Black Mesa (2020)

Crowbar Collective

The fan collective has created a remake of the original Half-Life. Playing as Gordon Freeman, your objective is to survive a catastrophic interdimensional event at Black Mesa. In addition to extraterrestrial threats, you must also evade the government’s attempts to conceal the disaster.

Our admiration for it: Black Mesa pays tribute to the fans, community, and influence of Valve’s original Half-Life. With enhanced visuals and graphics, this reimagining of the 1998 shooter flawlessly captures all the elements that made the game so beloved.

Additionally, it adds its own unique touch by transforming the first half of the game into a survival horror experience. The increasingly ominous emergency service broadcasts heard while exploring are enough to send shivers down one’s spine. Furthermore, it successfully addresses the long-standing issue of Xen, the alien world that has been a source of frustration for many Half-Life players.

The Exciting World of ULTRAKILL in 2020

A screenshot from Ultrakill
New Blood Interactive

Synopsis: ULTRAKILL combines the best elements of character action games such as Devil May Cry and incorporates them into a first-person shooter. Have you ever dreamed of deflecting a shotgun blast? Look no further, this is the perfect game for you.

What sets ULTRAKILL apart: While most FPS games provide players with guns, ULTRAKILL offers a diverse toolset.

One example is a pistol that allows you to flip a coin and shoot it mid-air. This is already impressive, but imagine if you tossed four coins and used a railgun to shoot them. That would take things to the next level.

ULTRAKILL offers a wide range of skills such as air dashes, wall jumps, a grappling hook, and weapon attachments that all work together in unique ways. Its level of skill and expression is unmatched, even when compared to the games that influenced its creation.

Not to mention the punishing secret bosses, such as Minos Prime and Sisyphus Prime, that are specifically designed to test your skills. This is one of the reasons why ULTRAKILL maintains its top-rated status on Steam, even though it is still in its early access stage.

43. Hyper Demon (2022)

A screenshot from Hyper Demon
Sorath

Summary: Hyper Demon may appear confusing at first glance. It can be difficult to explain, as it is a rogue-like game that resets upon death. Players must be prepared for quick deaths.

What makes it great: Hyper Demon is a testament to skill, a game that measures progress solely through personal growth and comprehension. It consistently challenges you and demands that you make the best choices at every turn, with moments feeling like an eternity in the heat of the action.

Despite the lack of outside progression and the inability to use save states, the game remains in front of you. The only way to make progress is by repeatedly trying, run after run after run, and relying solely on the skills you acquire. Despite the challenging nature, there is a certain allure to this game that drives you to persist. It compels you to continue facing this psychedelic nightmare, pushing through until you start to recognize patterns in enemy movements and learn how to effectively combat them.

Hyper Demon is not a game that can be easily beaten. It must be conquered and one can only truly begin playing by fully understanding all of its mechanics. Despite being one of the most challenging games ever created, it is also completely unique from any other game.

Resident Evil 8 (2021)

Capcom

Summary: Ethan Winters returns for a new daunting journey as he navigates a village overrun by werewolves in search of his kidnapped daughter.

Despite being categorized as a survival horror game rather than a typical shooter, Resident Evil 8 still delivers intense gunplay. By expanding the game beyond the confines of the Baker mansion, the experience becomes less claustrophobic and more focused on action. In fact, players can expect to feel panic when confronted by the hyper-fast werewolf enemies attacking from all angles.

41. Counter-Strike: GO (2012)

Valve

About the game: Similar to previous CS titles, CS:GO does not have a specific storyline. Instead, the focus is on objective-based game modes where two teams, the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, compete against each other.

Our admiration for it: CS:GO is undeniably one of the best competitive shooters in existence, which is reinforced by its thriving esports community. It has perfected the blend of individual and team-based tactics that are synonymous with Counter-Strike, resulting in an impressively high level of skill required to excel. Combined with its highly addictive Competitive mode, complete with a robust ranked system and economy, CS:GO truly offers the ultimate FPS experience. It caters to both the serious players looking to climb the ranks with their mastery of weapons like the AWP and AK47, as well as more casual players who enjoy collecting rare skins. In all aspects, GO exceeds expectations.

Neon White (2022)

The cast of Neon White
Annapurna Interactive

Synopsis: Neon White is a unique blend of a card-based rogue-like, FPS, and parkour game. Its fast-paced puzzle solving and shooting elements engage unexpected areas of the mind, satisfying hidden cravings for mental stimulation.

Reasons for our admiration: Neon White is so captivating that it could easily be classified as a category one drug. I was on the verge of failing college after spending 20 hours playing this game in just two days. But, in the end, who needs a film school degree anyway?

Putting jokes aside, this game truly excels at providing an experience that I never knew I wanted. Despite the lack of animation and the use of a simplified art style in the trailers, the gameplay is what truly shines.

With the constant choices between discarding, shooting, or using an ability on a card, and the distinction between completing a level and fully mastering it, there is never a shortage of challenges to face. The developers have also cleverly added hidden dev times on every stage for those who enjoy a masochistic challenge.

With its infinite replayability and endless entertainment, Neon White is definitely worth trying out, especially now that it’s available on Game Pass.

38. Hunt: Showdown (2019)

Hunt showdown cover
Crytek

This game is a multiplayer extraction shooter that centers around teams of hunters. Their main objective is to hunt and eliminate mythical creatures in order to obtain their bounties. However, they must also compete against other bounty hunters in the process.

Our appreciation for it stems from: Hunt: Showdown’s harsh consequences for death. Not only does it result in a failed match, but your character is also permanently lost, forcing you to begin anew. This intensifies the gameplay as you compete against numerous other players to claim the bounty.

Your situational awareness becomes your most valuable skill. Every sound and movement could be a potential threat to your survival, making it crucial to stay alert. You must also take care to avoid making noise and drawing attention to yourself. Although it is a shooter game, the true challenge lies in successfully avoiding combat.

What it’s about: On Jackie Estacado’s 21st birthday, his uncle attempts to kill him. This leads Jackie to tap into the power of the Darkness, a demonic force, for protection and vengeance. Why we like it: While many shooters tend to be serious and realistic, The Darkness provides a refreshing and thrilling change of pace. With its unique abilities, including the ability to use tentacles to tear apart enemies, this game offers a satisfying and immersive experience. Plus, its well-crafted levels and captivating escapism make it a must-play… just try not to focus on the less-than-stellar enemy AI.

What it’s about: After being arrested, Alyx must navigate her way into a Combine vault in search of a possible super weapon. Why it’s impressive: Despite being a VR game, Half-Life: Alyx has earned a spot on this list. As Paul Rudd would say, “surprise, surprise”. The game excels in its intense gunplay, challenging puzzles, and gripping atmosphere. While some may have been disappointed by the VR exclusivity of the next installment in the Half-Life series, Half-Life: Alyx proves that VR can provide a truly immersive gaming experience.

Description: Call of Duty’s free-to-play battle royale game provides an exciting and enjoyable experience for players of all levels, whether they are looking for a more casual or competitive gameplay.

What makes it appealing: In its prime, Call of Duty was the top choice for shooter games worldwide. However, as the 2010s progressed, many fans grew disappointed and the franchise declined. That is, until Warzone emerged, reinvigorating the series and ushering in a new era of success.

Warzone provided a refreshing twist to the traditional casual battle royale genre with its fast-paced gameplay, making it a truly enjoyable experience. Despite its unique maps, rapid movements, and consistent updates to maintain balance, Warzone never lost its lightheartedness. Although the game has calmed down over time, it continues to be a major factor in the resurgence of COD’s popularity.

Far Cry 3 (2012)

Vaas Montenegro from Fall Out 3
Ubisoft

Far Cry 3 is an open-world adventure that takes place on the fictional Rook Islands. Players control Jason Brody, a young man who is vacationing with friends. However, their trip takes a dark turn when Jason must use his primal instincts to save his loved ones from a crazed antagonist. In order to succeed, Jason must transform into something he never thought possible.

Despite its now-iconic villain, Vaas Montenegro, and popularization of radio towers that reveal open-world maps, Far Cry 3’s other elements often go unnoticed. However, the game still shines with its enjoyable gunplay, reliable stealth options, and well-integrated hunting mechanics that contribute to a captivating crafting system.

Far Cry 3 offers a wide selection of weapons, including assault rifles, bows, pistols, shotguns, and more, for players to use as they take on the role of a shooter. This allows players to either embody the fierce fighting style of Rambo or utilize stealth techniques similar to those of Ubisoft Montreal’s Sam Fisher. While the game is typically known for its thrilling sandbox gameplay, it should also be recognized for its impressive first-person shooter mechanics.

33. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010)

Key art from Bad Company 2
Electronic Arts

Overview: Battlefield’s groundbreaking game introduced DICE’s signature franchise to a wider audience by reducing the scale of combat while still presenting innovative ideas that surpassed those of any other shooter at the time.

Reasons for our admiration: Despite not aging as gracefully as its counterparts, Bad Company 2 remains a timeless classic. Although it lacks certain elements like the ability to go prone, its unique feature of destructible environments adds an unpredictable and unmatched dynamic to gunfights. No place is safe in this game, as the entire map can be flattened, setting it apart from its competitors.

Interestingly, it wasn’t only the multiplayer aspect that stood out, which is usually the case for Battlefield games. The game’s storyline was truly remarkable, presenting a cinematic masterpiece that could easily be compared to a highly praised war movie.

What is the premise of Superhot? It is a first-person shooter game where time only progresses when the player moves, creating a unique gameplay experience. The objective is to complete each level with minimal movement.

What sets Superhot apart from other video games with time-freezing mechanics is its dynamic use of the environment. While this feature has been seen in games like Max Payne and Prince of Persia, Superhot takes it to the next level by allowing players to experiment with various elements in the environment during combat. Using objects such as guns, bottles, and figurines, players can take down enemies in hyper-stylized moments. The game even allows players to channel their inner Kill Bill and use a katana to cut through bullets.

28. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (2017)

The New Colossus, a sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order, follows the story of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he leads a revolution against the Nazi regime in America. This game has been described as the “Mad Max: Fury Road of video games”and for good reason. It takes everything we loved about the first game and improves upon it, resulting in a superb gameplay experience. The addition of stealth adds depth to the gameplay, but ultimately, the story takes center stage. Colossus tackles deep and dark themes without being heavy-handed or preachy, making it a smart, entertaining, and thrilling game. It’s hard not to love it.

Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)

Key art from Star Wars Battlefront 2

The main focus of the original Battlefront II is on the famous battles of the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War from the Star Wars universe. You can experience these battles on iconic landscapes, both on land and in space, and take on the role of various soldiers or even well-known heroes and villains, depending on your choices.

Despite its perfect representation of the epic battles seen in the movies, Battlefront II is not solely intended for Star Wars enthusiasts. With the addition of space battles, an enhanced campaign, and a larger roster of iconic characters, both fans and non-fans alike can enjoy the game.

The Star Wars galaxy offers a uniquely immersive experience with its strategic and large-scale battles on land and in space. The space battles are especially thrilling, as players can pilot iconic TIE fighters and X-wings to take down enemy ships. However, the excitement doesn’t end there, as players can also use their favorite characters’ Force abilities and lightsabers to effortlessly defeat enemy troops.

Its stunning graphics, vast maps, and immersive gun mechanics allow players to experience a realistic (albeit somewhat) battle with intense large-scale combat and a plethora of vehicles to satisfy all players.

Despite the disappointment of Battlefield 2042, can we still consider Battlefield V to be highly respected? It’s difficult to determine. However, one thing that is certain is the undeniable charm of BF V. As a contemporary, expansive shooter, no other game quite compares to this exceptional title.

The game features a storyline following CIA and SAS operatives as they collaborate to defeat a Russian general and terrorist organization. Fans of the series will be pleased to see the return of familiar characters like Captain Price.

The addition of cross-platform servers was well received, and the Gunsmith feature offers greater customization options for players to tailor their weapons to their preferred playstyle.

Despite a few criticisms about its fast time-to-kill, the combination of familiar and innovative elements in the game offered a nostalgic experience for both long-time Call of Duty fans and newcomers. Key art from System Shock
Prime Matter

What is the premise: System Shock effectively captures the 1994 sci-fi masterpiece, transporting players to Citadel Station, which has been transformed into a chaotic battlefield by SHODAN, a rogue AI.

What makes System Shock 2023 unique: While the market is saturated with first-person shooters, System Shock 2023 goes above and beyond by offering a more introspective and immersive experience. Despite the game’s focus on combat, its true value lies in its thought-provoking atmosphere. You may find yourself mindlessly shooting through waves of enemies, but that is not the game’s true intention.

A highlight of the game is its combination of high-energy combat and strategic exploration and preparation. As you navigate the space station, you will not only engage in running and shooting, but also utilize hacking skills to access security systems, scavenge for resources, and outsmart the terrifying creatures sent by SHODAN.

As the player, you must face off against Alma, a ghost girl who loves to give you a good fright, while battling your way through hordes of enemy soldiers. While the story may not be groundbreaking, the gameplay is truly exceptional.

The reason we appreciate it: Even though this eerie tactical shooter gained attention for its unique blend of genres, its impressive AI, intense gunplay, and stunning graphics have allowed it to remain significant.

FEAR is incredibly engaging, thanks to its bullet time mechanic and its crunchy, high-impact weapons. Additionally, the enemies in the game provide a real challenge, adding to the overall immersive experience.

Despite the release of several sequels, none have been able to match the heights achieved by this game. In fact, the only game that comes close to it in the past 20 years is its spiritual successor, Trepang2.

Despite its age, FEAR would still be celebrated as one of the greatest tactical shooters ever made if it were released today. Don’t let its age intimidate you.

Apex Legends (2019)

Characters in Apex Legends

Overview: As the follow-up to Titanfall 2, Respawn’s Apex has become a widely successful Battle Royale game. Players drop onto a map, collect supplies, and fight to be the sole survivor – a familiar concept. However, Apex sets itself apart for a variety of reasons.

What we appreciate about it: Upon its initial release, Apex distinguished itself by adapting the gameplay of Titanfall 2 to a different platform and incorporating entertaining characters. It quickly gained popularity and has continued to thrive thanks to frequent and impressive updates.

Despite some controversy surrounding the handling of the Battle Pass, Apex Legends has continued to stay at the forefront of players’ minds with frequent additions such as new maps, modes, guns, characters, attachments, and mechanics. The recent introduction of dual-wield P2020s and Mozambiques has also successfully drawn players back in. As a result, Apex Legends has solidified its position as one of the most popular BRs.

Despite occasional fluctuations in player count, Apex has managed to thrive in a highly competitive live service genre. This is a testament to its staying power and appeal.

20. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Activision

The second part of the original Modern Warfare trilogy continues to follow the adventures of main protagonists Soap and Price, as they join forces with popular character Ghost for the first time. Together, they face off against a Russian ultranationalist who has instigated a worldwide conflict.

What we appreciate: The original Modern Warfare set the groundwork, but its sequel elevated the entire franchise. With its vengeful plot and the introduction of Ghost, the campaign was unforgettable. However, the multiplayer experience truly stood out as the highlight.

MW2 offered an abundance of top-tier Killstreaks, weapons, game modes, and maps. From the iconic Nuke and the lethal Intervention sniper rifle to fan-favorite maps like Terminal, Rust, and Scrapyard, it provided an unmatched FPS experience.

Despite some overpowered weaponry and killstreaks, few were more frustrating than the Akimbo Model 1887s and Chopper Gunner. Nevertheless, it can be argued that it is the most iconic CoD game of all.

Rainbow Six Operation Vector Glare operator Sens holding up gun
Ubisoft

Description: Rainbow 6: Siege elevated the series to new levels, introducing a multiplayer concept where knowledge is crucial and maps can be destroyed, making for an interactive battlefield.

We are drawn to Siege due to its remarkable redemption arc in the world of gaming. Despite receiving lackluster reviews and initially attracting a modest number of players, Ubisoft’s unwavering belief in the game’s strong fundamentals led to continued investment and ultimately propelled it to success.

Fortunately, they made the right decision. Rainbow 6: Siege has emerged as one of the most sought-after multiplayer shooters, offering unparalleled gameplay that cannot be found elsewhere.

While having a good aim is certainly important, the true strength of this game lies in being able to shoot through walls and strategically utilize tools like cameras and drones to outsmart your opponent. Simply relying on raw mechanics will not guarantee success in Rainbow 6: Siege, as the game also heavily emphasizes skills such as leaning and achieving one-shot headshots.

Despite its current difficulty to join, Siege’s wide range of operators and their individual abilities provide plenty of content to immerse yourself in. With dedication to mastering the game, you will reap the benefits.

What makes it appealing: Whether you’re drawn to the high-energy multiplayer or the thrilling time-traveling campaign, Titanfall 2 offers something for everyone.

The popularity of Apex Legends is largely attributed to its foundations, and it can be seen as a diluted form of what the game truly offers. Fans have been eagerly requesting for Respawn to reintroduce the beloved wallrunning feature from Titanfall 2 into Apex.

Despite its dwindling popularity and the unlikely release of Titanfall 3, this game continues to offer a variety of weapons, grappling hooks, and fast-paced melee combat that translate seamlessly between single-player and multiplayer modes. It is definitely worth revisiting, especially since it can often be found on sale for as little as $3 USD on Steam, making it a bargain.

Synopsis: The story follows Noble Team, a team of genetically enhanced soldiers known as Spartans, as they fight against the Covenant’s increasing attacks on humanity’s remaining stronghold.

Our reason for liking it: Bungie’s final installment in the Halo franchise, Halo: Reach, showcases the series’ multiplayer at its peak and its single-player at its darkest. It encompasses the ultimate version of Halo gameplay, incorporating all the knowledge and skills Bungie has acquired since 2001.

During the space race, Bungie set out to create the ultimate multiplayer shooter and did not disappoint. With Halo: Reach, they delivered the tightest multiplayer experience yet. While still maintaining its unique style, the game introduced a few new features such as loadouts, bringing Halo on par with Call of Duty.

15. PUBG (2017)

PUBG
PUBG Corporation

PUBG, also known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is a battle royale game that thrusts players into a vast, open-world battlefield with the ultimate objective of being the sole survivor or last team standing.

PUBG is widely considered the reigning champion of battle royale games (apologies to Fortnite enthusiasts), fearlessly establishing its own rules and daring all competitors to measure up to its excellence.

The game’s combat is known for its realistic and challenging elements, with variables like bullet trajectory, recoil, and the sound of approaching enemies all having significant impact. To succeed in this battle royale game, players must possess accuracy, composure, and heightened awareness of their environment.

No matter how you approach combat, whether it be from a sniper’s perch or room by room, each encounter in the game has a sense of purpose. The main focus of the game is the exhilaration of survival and defeating your adversaries.

The key to success is not only being stronger than your opponents, but also utilizing your abilities to outsmart them. The feeling of satisfaction from outwitting your adversaries is just as fulfilling as emerging victorious in battle.

14. GoldenEye (1997)

Rare

The game, GoldenEye, is based on the popular 1995 James Bond film of the same name, allowing players to take control of 007 as he fights against a rogue MI6 agent trying to gain control of a satellite weapon. One of the reasons we appreciate this game is because it completely revolutionized the gaming industry. Although games like Quake had already established the first-person shooter genre on PC, GoldenEye proved that there was a significant market for this type of game on consoles. Apart from its impact on the industry, it’s essential to acknowledge how enjoyable this game was. The gameplay was seamless, the graphics were impressive (for that time), and the music was unforgettable. Many would argue that GoldenEye is one of the best

About the game: Valorant, a tactical shooter developed by Riot Games, has successfully entered the realm of a genre that was previously monopolized by Counter-Strike. With its diverse range of characters and thriving competitive community, it is definitely worth giving a try.

What makes us appreciate it: Valorant distinguishes itself from other first-person shooters by implementing meaningful changes to the traditional CS formula. The game features a wide range of dynamic, multi-dimensional maps and well-balanced character abilities, allowing for diverse team compositions and adding an extra layer of excitement not found in similar games.

While it still demands precise aiming, game sense, and proper crosshair placement, the inclusion of abilities has made it more accessible and leveled the playing field, making it the most approachable game in its genre.

Riot Games has once again demonstrated their expertise in creating top-notch esports titles with this one, breaking free from their previous successes with League of Legends and expanding their impact on the esports industry.

12. Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)

Left 4 Dead's earliest prototype was leaked in CS 1.6
Valve

About the game: Left 4 Dead 2 follows a group of outcasts as they battle their way through waves of zombies, although the community has transformed it into something entirely unique.

On its own, Left 4 Dead 2 is an excellent game that greatly improves upon its predecessor. It offers a wider selection of weapons, more diverse zombie types, and a range of locations and campaign objectives to keep players engaged. The list of enhancements goes on and on.

Nevertheless, the modding community is where L4D2 truly excels in today’s era. The intense and suspenseful gameplay is still available for those seeking it, but now players have the option to control a group of animated female characters while being chased by Pepsi Man and attacked by Gollum. The modding community has truly made this game their own.

It’s remarkable that this game continues to be highly favored, and a large factor in this is the ease of modding and the frequent addition of new content by dedicated players.

Despite the fact that developers may contribute updates and new content to a game to prolong its lifespan, Left 4 Dead 2 serves as evidence that, at times, it is more beneficial to allow the community to add their desired elements themselves.

11. Bioshock (2007)

100 best games bioshock
2K

Summary: Rapture, a city built on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, was founded by one man’s vision of a society free from government control. This allowed for the development of Plasmids, gene-altering substances that players can use to fight against the horrors of the underwater city. Players can freeze, electrocute, and set fire to their enemies as they navigate through the city’s dangers.

Why we enjoy it: While BioShock is often praised for its immersive gameplay, eccentric characters, and provocative storytelling, its gunplay is often overlooked. However, the excitement of combat lies in the combination of using Plasmids with the character’s left hand and firing shots with the gun in their right. This unique “one-two punch”approach adds to the overall enjoyment of the game.

This gameplay loop offers endless opportunities, ensuring that each player will tackle confrontations with Splicers and Big Daddies in their own unique way. Despite the criticism of its gun controls, the first BioShock’s distinctive style of action continued to captivate audiences and remained a defining feature throughout the series.

Bungie’s looter shooter is a captivating tale of the constant battle between Light and Darkness, which is explored throughout two games, multiple expansions, and a vast collection of weapons.

Reasons for our admiration: With a track record of developing the popular game Halo, it comes as no surprise that Bungie has once again crafted a captivating sci-fi world. Nevertheless, Destiny has exceeded all expectations since its inception, solidifying its position as the ultimate looter shooter game to date.

Despite Bungie’s annual practice of vaulting content, Destiny 2 remains the top choice for those who enjoy chasing loot and optimizing their builds. With five campaigns, nine raids, eight dungeons, and regular seasonal events, as well as other exciting content, there is always something new to explore and conquer in the game.

Blizzard

Synopsis: The popular hero shooter from Blizzard Entertainment that sparked a new sub-genre of games, revolutionizing the traditional first-person shooter experience.

What we love about it: With its enjoyable and polished gameplay, Overwatch may not have pioneered the hero shooter genre, but it certainly excels at it. However, the true standout feature of Overwatch is its diverse and dynamic character lineup. From fan favorites like Tracer and Mercy to a total of 40 unique characters, each one boasts their own distinct design, personality, playstyle, and backstory.

The heroes in Overwatch are what make the game so addictive. Its team-based gameplay, inspired by MOBA games, and incredibly high skill cap provide plenty of content for competitive players. With the release of Overwatch 2, these ideas have only been strengthened and show no signs of slowing down.

Synopsis: Black Ops II takes place in two different time periods: the 1980s during the Cold War and the near-future of 2025. The game follows the story of Alex Mason and his son David as they confront Raul Menendez, a rogue Nicaraguan terrorist who uses his influence to incite a global conflict with various possible outcomes.

What sets it apart: The futuristic setting of Black Ops II allowed for an innovative multiplayer experience that we truly enjoyed. The game offered a variety of engaging FPS modes, a highly addictive League Play feature, and a unique twist on Zombies.

The vivid and vibrant setting found throughout all game modes and maps enhanced the overall gameplay experience compared to its predecessor, Black Ops I. This was especially evident in the iconic Nuketown map. Additionally, the multiplayer mode’s well-balanced arsenal, the widely acclaimed Pick 10 perk system, and expertly crafted maps like Raid, Express, and Standoff contributed to its massive success with casual and competitive players alike.

7. Counter-Strike: Source (2004)

Counter-Strike: Source
Valve

Counter-Strike: Source might be more than 16 years old, but people still play it.

The game Counter-Strike: Source is a tactical multiplayer FPS with no storyline. Instead, it offers traditional objective-based game modes like Bomb Defusal and Hostages. These modes involve two teams, the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, competing against each other.

What we appreciate about it: The game seamlessly combines the classic Counter-Strike gameplay with significant improvements from the Source engine, making it a significant release in the FPS genre. It maintains the original’s popular tactical, team-based combat while revamping its graphics, physics, and mechanics for a more fluid and enjoyable gaming experience.

The game offered its usual selection of well-known weapons and maps, ensuring a competitive and satisfying multiplayer experience. Additionally, the game boasted a thriving community of modders who contributed to its popularity by creating a diverse array of user-generated maps and modes, including Gun Game, Zombies, Jailbreak, and Surf. 6. Borderlands 2 (2012)

About the game: Similar to its predecessor, Borderlands 2 follows the journey of four Vault Hunters, each possessing their own distinct abilities. However, this time, the playable characters must navigate a new world and confront a never-before-seen enemy, the infamous Handsome Jack. With a seemingly endless arsenal of weapons at their disposal, our heroes should have no trouble taking down Jack and his army of psychos.

What we appreciate about it: As a sequel to the game that pioneered the looter-shooter genre, Borderlands 2 takes the franchise’s light RPG mechanics to the next level by offering an even wider range of unique guns. With an impressive arsenal of nearly 18 million weapons, there is something for every type of player. Want to wield an SMG that shoots corrosive ammo? No problem. How about a shotgun that can unleash a 3D-printed grenade upon reload? It’s got that too. And the gunplay itself is top-notch, with fast-paced and chaotic action that keeps players on their toes. There’s rarely a moment to catch your breath once the bullets start flying and Vault

5. Quake (1996)

The Quake logo
GT Interactive[

Summary: In Quake, you take on the role of the Ranger, a soldier who travels between dimensions to uncover the source of a monster invasion.

Reasons for our admiration: This unusual combination of desolate, dystopian environments and medieval elements has yet to be replicated (although Doom: The Dark Ages is moving in that direction). The plot is unremarkable and seems to primarily serve as a means for players to storm monster-infested fortresses armed with a rocket launcher and shotgun.

Although Quake did not have the same lasting cultural influence as Doom, it still played a pivotal role in pioneering the FPS genre by bringing it into the third dimension. The gunplay remains impressive even today, and the 2021 remaster is arguably the optimal way to experience the game.

Despite its age, Quake remains a highly enjoyable game nearly 30 years after its release. If you’re seeking a piece of gaming history that still holds up well, Quake is a superior choice to the original Doom in terms of longevity.

Valve

Plot Summary: After being in stasis for years, Gordon Freeman awakens to find that Earth has been conquered by an alien army known as The Combine. In order to liberate humanity, he teams up with old allies and embarks on a journey with a new companion, Alyx.

What we appreciate about it: It is difficult not to overstate the impact of Half-Life 2. Upon its release in 2004, the game not only set a new standard for quality but continues to have a significant influence even today.

Despite the passage of time, the Eastern Bloc aesthetics, disorientation, and gradual build-up to intense action still have a powerful impact. With its unabashed horror elements, Ravenholm challenged our understanding of Half-Life.

Valve’s decision to make Half-Life 2 and the Source Engine as accessible as possible has greatly influenced the direction of the gaming industry. This has allowed aspiring modders to utilize tools such as Hammer and Source Filmmaker, resulting in the creation of popular cultural phenomena like Garry’s Mod and the more recent Skibidi Toilet.

Our reason for admiration: Doom’s release had a significant impact on the gaming industry, solidifying its place as one of the most influential games in history. It served as a catalyst for the success of 3D games and first-person shooters, revolutionizing the genre and introducing lasting elements still prevalent in FPS games today.

Even to this day, Doom’s enduring selection of weapons and intricate maze-like level design keeps it as a timeless game. The iconic “rip and tear”element has become a trademark of the series and, with its simple modding capabilities, has allowed the game to thrive for over 30 years due to the vast amount of mods and user-created levels.

What set Halo 3 apart was its diverse community, ranging from casual players to highly skilled competitors.

The immense popularity of this game can be attributed to its extensive content, consisting of an exceptional campaign, an extensive multiplayer mode, and unmatched replay value. Halo 3 established a standard that shaped the gaming landscape of its time, a standard that even the franchise itself has yet to surpass.

Key art from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Activision

Subject: The introduction of the Modern Warfare series marked a departure from Call of Duty’s usual World War II setting, bringing the game into the modern-day. The story centers around Soap and Price, members of a British SAS unit, and Jackson, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, as they work together to put an end to ongoing conflicts in Russia and the Middle East.

Our admiration for it: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare completely transformed the FPS genre by delivering a gripping cinematic campaign and covert missions, along with an innovative multiplayer experience.

The fast-paced multiplayer gave rise to a run-and-gun style, resulting in a competitive yet enjoyable and approachable gaming experience. It also brought in the well-known Prestige leveling system, Killstreaks, and unlockable weapons and perks. Additionally, each map quickly became a fan favorite, including Shipment, Crash, and Overgrown.

In summary, the initial Modern Warfare not only revolutionized the CoD series, but also established the standard for many upcoming FPS games. As expected, it achieved top sales in 2007 and remains an almost flawless shooter.
