There are numerous factors to consider in a game like Frostpunk 2, including provisions, housing, relationships, the harsh climate, and, importantly, the means to heat your society. To achieve this, acquiring Cores becomes essential, and finding them is not straightforward.
Cores are crucial resources that enable you to unlock advanced buildings and, more significantly, to upgrade your city’s generator. Consequently, progressing in the game and improving relationships and warmth hinges on obtaining Cores. However, since this resource is finite, strategic planning is necessary.
With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about acquiring Cores in Frostpunk 2, along with some helpful tips and the prime locations to find them.
How to Obtain Cores
To obtain Cores in Frostpunk 2, you must explore Frostland to uncover this resource, which can be found in select regions.
Sadly, you cannot acquire Cores via mining or extraction in any of your Colonies or Cities, except for Winterhome, which features a few deposits during the game’s story. However, time is of the essence, as toxic gases will limit your mining duration.
Retrieving Cores from Buildings
You can deconstruct specific buildings for Cores.
Although new Cores can only be obtained through exploration, players can retrieve previously utilized Cores by dismantling buildings.
If you’ve constructed something that required a Core (excluding the generators, which is not advised), such as the Deep Melting Drill or the Pressurized Coal Liquefactor, you can dismantle these for the same Core back. While this method isn’t ideal as it involves sacrificing a building, it becomes a viable option when you are out of exploration sites or urgently need a Core.
Best Locations to Find Cores
The Highlands are perilous yet rich in resources.
As mentioned earlier, Cores can be discovered through exploration in Frostpunk 2, with several specific locations yielding them:
- Mountains
- Valleys
- High Pass
- Howling Shore
- Frozen Ocean*
- Whispering Valley
- Hills
- Ridgeline
- Plains
- Highlands
Initially, it’s advisable to launch expeditions to the Highlands and then expand towards the Frozen Ocean. The Highlands is the most accessible location at the start of the storyline, while the Frozen Ocean hosts a wealth of additional resources, making it a lucrative expedition.
How to Launch Expeditions
Before embarking on expeditions to the above sites, you must first initiate an expedition.
To do this, navigate to New London and press ALT, which highlights a compass-like icon on the city’s borders. Frostbreak over to one of those locations and construct a Logistics District. This enables exploration.
The compass design indicates where you can establish the Logistics District.
Then, zoom out from the city to view the Frostlands around New London. Each area has variable difficulty levels and resources, so it’s crucial to select wisely before setting out.
You may encounter regions labeled as dangerous, or you may lack sufficient scouts for exploration. In this scenario, enhancing your expeditions is necessary.
This improvement is optimally achieved by expanding your Logistics District or constructing additional districts around New London, following the same previous steps. Tackling dangerous locations is more challenging. For this, you will need to build the Scouts Headquarters or enact the Scouts’ Law. This will render dangerous locations safe, provided you place the Scouts Headquarters within your Logistics Districts.
