On Thursday (October 24), Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon advocated for the resentencing of the Menendez brothers, suggesting that their sentences of life without the chance of parole be reconsidered.
“After thoroughly reviewing all the arguments presented… I have determined that, under the law, a resentencing is warranted and I will be recommending this to the court tomorrow,” Gascon stated during a press conference.

If the court agrees, both Erik and Lyle could see their sentences adjusted to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole consideration.
Despite spending 34 years in prison, California’s Youth Offender Parole law offers special sentencing options for individuals who were under the age of 26 when they committed offenses. Lyle and Erik were 21 and 18, respectively, when their crime occurred.
The District Attorney emphasized the brothers’ transformation during their time in prison, noting that they have earned college degrees and mentored fellow inmates. “Even though they never imagined they would be released, they have embarked on a path of redemption and rehabilitation,” he remarked.
Regarding the claims of abuse, Gascon added, “I firmly believe the brothers endured severe dysfunction and abuse in their home. After nearly 35 years in prison, I feel they have fulfilled their debt to society.”
