The inaugural year of Pokemon TCG Pocket is coming to an end, and as we approach 2024, the competitive landscape has unveiled its top decks, highlighting some unexpected favorites among the popular Pokémon.

Since its debut, Pokemon Pocket has released only two sets: Genetic Apex and Mythical Island, along with promotional boosters. Despite this limited card selection, the competitive scene has witnessed numerous upheavals, with lesser-known decks such as Golem and Scolipede making notable appearances.

As the year wraps up, a Reddit user from the PTCGP community shared insights into the leading decks, drawing from data provided by Limitless—a platform that has aggregated over 100,000 tournament results since its launch.

The Dominance of Gen 1 Pokémon in Competitive Play

The dominance of Gyarados ex and Mewtwo ex among the highest-ranked decks is not surprising. Gyarados ex is well-regarded for its swift Energy retrieval capabilities, significantly bolstered by the introduction of Misty and the new Vaporeon card from Mythical Island. Once this formidable sea serpent enters play, it poses a serious challenge for opponents.

Mewtwo ex has also gained considerable strength with the addition of Mew ex from Mythical Island, enhancing its versatility with the ability to copy moves. This synergy has preserved Mewtwo ex’s status as a formidable force within the current meta.

Meanwhile, Celebi ex has earned its position within the A-Tier, frequently cited as overpowered; however, it is significantly dependent on RNG (random number generation) luck and can be easily overwhelmed if the coin flips do not favor the player. In contrast, Pikachu ex has seen a decline in performance due to an increase in Pokémon that can attack the Bench.

Among the more surprising entries in the rankings are Golem and Scolipede. Golem has gained popularity in tournaments, largely supported by the effective stalling capabilities of Druddigon, which aids in setting up the deck. Scolipede, on the other hand, offers consistent poison damage, providing a steady nuisance for competitors.

The developers could have easily promoted a few dominant archetypes to incentivize pack purchases, yet players are finding ways to create powerful decks without financial investment.
