Xur, from Destiny 2, returned to the Tower on August 23 with his weekly offerings. These new items are essential for Prismatic users to fully utilize.
Previously, exotic class items could only be obtained from participating in Pale Heart activities and completing The Final Shape’s Dual Destiny mission. However, they can now be purchased without any restrictions from the Agent of the Nine for a cost of 41 Strange Coins each.
The maximum amount of currency allowed in Guardians’ inventory is 99, which allows for the purchase of two items at a time with some leftover change. This limit applies to subsequent rolls, which are not predetermined. Strange Coins can be earned from various activities, but the amount received may differ. For example, activities like Gambit and Crucible may have lower returns on investment compared to others.
Although Xur is currently the most efficient option for farming Exotic class items, the following activities are still the top choices for grinding. These activities are categorized by their base quantity and the maximum potential, and they require three stacks of Xur’s Favor.
Best Strange Coin sources
Activity | Strange Coins (Base) | Strange Coins (Xur’s Favor x3) |
---|---|---|
Vanguard Ops (Strikes) | 4 | 7 |
Onslaught (10 waves) | 2 | 2 |
Onslaught – Normal (10 waves) | 2 | 2 |
Onslaught – Normal (20 waves) | 3 | 3 |
Onslaught – Normal (30 waves) | 4 | 7 |
Onslaught – Normal (40 waves) | 5 | 8 |
Onslaught – Normal (50 waves) | 6 | 9 |
Onslaught – Normal (full clear) | 20 | 29 |
Nightfall – Advanced | 5 | 8 |
Nightfall – Expert | 8 | 11 |
Nightfall – Master | 9 | 12 |
Nightfall – Grandmaster | 10 | 13 |
Gambit (win) | 3 | 6 |
Gambit (loss) | 2 | 2 |
Crucible (win) | 3 | 6 |
Crucible (loss) | 2 | 2 |
Upon initial observation, completing a 50-wave run of Onslaught may seem like the most obvious choice for grinding, but this is not always the case.
Another great alternative is to manually choose a fast Strike such as Inverted Spire, Warden of Nothing, or Devil’s Lair from the Destination menu, which are all recommended by Vanguard Ops. Completing these strikes with three stacks of Xur’s Favor will still grant seven Strange Coins, making them a quicker and easier option that requires less time investment compared to Onslaught.
Similarly, weekly resets in which any of the aforementioned Strikes is the featured one can also lead to faster Nightfalls. However, the effectiveness of this strategy will rely on your chosen gear and loadout, making it beneficial to refer to our guides for top PvE weapons and builds.
Additionally, it should be noted that obtaining the Platinum reward from a Nightfall is not necessary for receiving the full payout of Strange Coins. Therefore, it is possible to ignore Champions if you are not actively searching for Adept weapons at the same time.
In an upcoming Destiny 2 update, Bungie intends to implement Exotic class item attunement. However, until then, this is currently the most effective way to obtain a desired roll.
