In a development that has sparked renewed discussion, acclaimed director Hong Sang-soo and talented actress Kim Min-hee have welcomed a child together, following their highly publicized extramarital affair.
Hong Sang-soo and Kim Min-hee Celebrate Birth of Their Son After a Decade-long Affair
Recent reports from insiders within the film industry indicate that Kim Min-hee has recently given birth to a son. Currently, she is recuperating at a postpartum care center located in Hanam City, Gyeonggi Province. Given the circumstances of the child’s birth, there is potential for the child to be registered either on Hong Sang-soo’s family register or exclusively under Kim Min-hee’s name, depending on their mutual agreement.
News of Kim’s pregnancy originally emerged in January. The couple garnered media attention again in February when Kim was spotted at Incheon International Airport with an evident baby bump alongside Hong. Despite being late in her pregnancy and nearing 44 years of age, Kim joined Hong on a trip to Germany for the Berlin International Film Festival, where his film, “What Does That Nature Say to You”, was featured in the competition.
During their stay in Berlin, Kim Min-hee, who served as the production manager for the film, notably refrained from participating in public engagements, such as the photocall and press conference. Conversely, Hong took the stage with cast members Ha Seong-guk, Kwon Hae-hyo, Jo Yoon-hee, and Kang So-i for media interactions. When pressed about his creative process, Hong provided his signature response: “I don’t really know. You might think it’s a lazy answer, but I wrote the script the day before or on the day of shooting, based on what came to mind.”
Although there was considerable excitement surrounding the couple and Hong’s film, it ultimately did not secure any awards at the festival. Yet, this was significant as it marked Hong Sang-soo’s sixth consecutive attendance at the Berlin International Film Festival, a series that includes several of his previously celebrated works.
A Controversial Romance
The personal life of Hong Sang-soo has consistently attracted public attention.He married Ms. A, a woman of the same age, in 1985 while he was pursuing studies in the U. S., and they share a daughter. In 2016, he initiated divorce mediation, but the process stalled when his wife refused to engage with the legal proceedings.
Hong and Kim’s paths crossed in 2015 during the production of “Right Now, Wrong Then, ” with their relationship publicly confirmed in March 2017 at a press conference for “On the Beach at Night Alone, ” where they openly expressed their love for each other.
Currently, Hong Sang-soo is 65 years old and Kim Min-hee is 43. Their newborn son is the first child from their controversial relationship, further complicating the public’s view on their decade-long affair.
While both Hong Sang-soo and Kim Min-hee have chosen to remain largely reticent about the birth, the news has evoked strong public reactions and stirred ethical discussions. The arrival of a child inevitably raises questions about the implications for both their personal lives and professional trajectories, especially given their ongoing collaboration in the competitive film industry.
