Totally forgotten PS3 controller works surprisingly well on Steam Deck

A Reddit user has found that the uDraw Game Tablet is compatible with the Steam Deck, even though it was not designed for the PlayStation 3.

At its core, the Steam Deck is essentially a PC. Like any other computer, this portable device can be connected to a variety of controllers and accessories to provide users with the complete PC experience.

Despite the compatibility of the Steam Deck with a variety of controllers, there are still some devices that may not work with it. However, in a surprising turn of events, a Reddit user has found that the Steam Deck is fully functional with the UDraw Game Tablet.

DootTheScoot, a Reddit user on r/SteamDeck, disclosed that the Steam Deck is compatible with the PlayStation 3 controller as a trackpad.

Upon watching the brief video, it is evident that the Steam Deck recognizes the controller as the “THQ uDraw Game tablet for PS3″in its settings without requiring any extra drivers or configuration. It appears that Valve has taken the necessary steps to ensure compatibility between this forgotten controller and Steam’s controller layer.

According to DootTheScoot, the current functionality of the tablet is limited to functioning solely as a touch-based trackpad with controller buttons, meaning that it does not allow for clicking and dragging as is possible with newer tablet models.

Despite being designed specifically for a series of art games on the PS3, the fact that it functions at all is truly remarkable.

Initially created by THQ and introduced in 2010, the uDraw Game Tablet was originally designed for the Nintendo Wii. However, it was subsequently adapted for use on the PS3 and Xbox 360, with its own collection of art-based games such as uDraw Studio: Instant Artist and SpongeBob SquigglePants.

The PS3 version of the tablet, which was demonstrated in the Reddit video, utilizes a dongle for functionality. This dongle was included with the initial purchase of the accessory. Once properly configured, the tablet operated similarly to a Wacom tablet, enabling users to draw and navigate games without a trackpad.

The standout feature of the PS3 version is its built-in D-pad and PlayStation branded buttons. As DootTheScoot mentions in the comments of their Reddit post, these controller buttons are compatible with the Steam Deck, making it a potentially perfect choice for playing older PlayStation games using the EmuDeck emulator.

Currently, the uDraw Game Tablet for PS3 is still being sold on second-hand websites and can also be found brand-new from third-party sellers on Amazon for $39.
