Tower of God Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Horyang’s Backstory Shines Amidst a Declining Series

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Horyang’s Backstory Shines Amidst a Declining Series

Despite widespread disappointment with the latest release of the season, there was still anticipation for a potential rebound in Tower of God season 2 episode 9. However, when the episode finally aired on Sunday, September 1, 2024, it proved to be another lackluster and uneventful installment, failing to live up to expectations once again.

Despite the lack of quality action, the highlight of Tower of God season 2 episode 9 is the exploration of Kang Horyang’s backstory. This adds substance to the episode by providing meaningful developments. However, the rest of the episode lacks focus and fails to clearly establish any other elements.

Tower of God: Horyang’s Backstory and Bam’s Revelation – A Review of Season 2 Episode 9

The initial portion of Tower of God’s ninth episode in season 2 centers on the unveiling of Kang Horyang’s past through a flashback, effectively evoking a sense of emotional connection. This development seamlessly aligns with the overarching themes of the season, delving into the predetermined path and purpose dictated by Horyang’s upbringing. It also highlights the parallel between Horyang and Bam, as they both have a companion they hold dear and strive towards climbing the tower for.

Horyang’s character serves to deepen the connection and relatability between him and Bam, while also endearing him to fans. Additionally, Horyang provides a raw and unfiltered look into the effects of the tower’s games on even the most depraved individuals. While season 1 highlighted the use of manipulation for personal gain, season 2 delves into the manipulation for more sinister purposes.

Continuing with the same focus, the second half of Tower of God season 2 episode 9 delves into the reactions of the others towards Horyang’s backstory. The majority of the events are uneventful, until Bam steps outside to have a conversation with Horyang. During this interaction, the two form a bond as they both share a history of being subjected to experiments involving Living Ignition Weapons, despite them being unrelated. This proves to be extremely beneficial for viewers as it quickly explains the purpose of the rib cage that surrounds Bam.

Despite the aforementioned flaws, the episode effectively strengthens the bond between the two main characters and showcases how their relationship develops. Additionally, Bam’s actions in this scene endear him to the audience as he breaks FUG’s rules to share his past with Horyang, showing his growth in making new connections. Despite its shortcomings, the episode successfully executes its main focus, making it a standout installment.

Tower of God season 2 episode 9 critique: Limited plot progression, lackluster action, and other drawbacks

Despite being the largest aspect of Tower of God season 2 episode 9, there is a lack of significant plot progression. The majority of the episode is dedicated to setting up for the Workshop Battle, with Horyang leaving his group towards the end. However, it is evident that their paths will cross again before the season’s conclusion, given their shared origins with Cassano. Additionally, the limited focus on Khun in this episode mainly serves to provide information and expand on the lore, rather than moving the story forward.

Although the emphasis on Horyang and Bam’s growth mentioned above may help to offset this issue, it alone is not enough. Various alternatives, such as shifting the focus to Shibisu and the others or including the rest of the team in Horyang’s conversation with Bam, could have potentially achieved the same result. However, the execution falls short and cannot fully excuse the episode’s shortcomings.

Despite potential for exceptional action, Tower of God season 2 episode 9 falls short in this aspect. The only fight depicted is a brief and unimpressive one between Horyang and Bam, lasting a mere 45 seconds. The animation is lackluster, with unfocused and sweeping shots and wooden and static movements. This lack of action further adds to the disappointment of the episode.

Despite some minor similarities, the latest episode is the least visually impressive due to its predominantly indoor setting. Even the most basic elements, such as background design and animation quality, fail to impress. This further emphasizes the stark decline in visual aesthetic with the new animation studio, The Answer Studio, compared to the previous studio, Telecom Animation Films.

Despite its strong points, Tower of God season 2 episode 9 falls short in the voice acting aspect, particularly in Kenichiro Matsuda’s portrayal of Horyang. Whether due to direction or other factors, the delivery of Horyang’s dialogue lacks the emotional depth needed to convey the gravity of his tragic backstory. While the words are spoken, they lack the impact necessary to truly resonate with the audience.

Despite there being no standout bad performances in the dubbing of the installment, there are also no exceptional ones. This is concerning, as by the ninth episode of the season, there should be at least a few characters whose auditory performances stand out. Whether it’s due to the large cast or other reasons, the series’ cast has yet to deliver any truly remarkable voice work in season 2.

Despite the commendable aspects of Tower of God season 2 episode 9, they are not plentiful enough to outweigh the negatives. Unfortunately, the change in studios from Telecom Animation Films to The Answer Studios has caused some inherent issues that contribute to these negatives.

Some things are within our control, and therefore more prone to mistakes as there are ways to address them. Although it is a team effort, there is certainly potential for personal growth in all major aspects. With the Workshop Battle approaching, hopefully the season can come together and give fans something to look forward to.
