Tower of God Season 2’s Subtitle Controversy Sparks Accusations Against Crunchyroll

The recent installment of Tower of God Season 2 has sparked further criticism from viewers, as inadequate subtitling has left many questioning the behind-the-scenes happenings.

Four years of anticipation came to an end in July of this year when the second season of Tower of God premiered. The anime received a strong reaction in 2020, leading to the quick confirmation of a second season. However, the animation was hindered by various challenges, such as the global shutdown and a change in studios.

In the end, we did reach our destination and the secrets of the Tower continued to unfold in 2024. However, the quality has not been satisfactory as Episode 7 contains some poorly done subtitles that are frustrating viewers.

The episode, titled ‘Her Name Is Emily’, features dialogue that can be perceived as awkward, forced, and even comical. For example, at one point, the main character says, “My name is Emily” with a serious expression.

During another moment, she seemingly utters, “I’m a chat robot”without any context, which has led Reddit users to speculate that it is actually a line from Episode 8. The mention of Viole reinforces this theory, but it does not make the episode any less tedious to endure.

In addition to previous concerns, there has been growing doubt surrounding the direction of Tower of God as a series. One Redditor expressed frustration, stating, “What is Crunchyroll’s strategy? It’s almost as if they are intentionally sabotaging the success of Tower of God.”

According to a commenter, not only do the subtitles fail to function for English, but they work flawlessly for every other language. This has left the commenter feeling even more frustrated than before.

The subtitles have been repaired, although the current season is beginning to suffer from reputational consequences.
