Anticipation is building for Toy Story 5, despite its release still being several years away. Tim Allen, the voice behind Buzz Lightyear, recently shared his enthusiasm for the sequel, suggesting that audiences will find the wait worthwhile.
Following Disney’s massive success with Moana 2, expectations are high for the new installment of the beloved Toy Story franchise. Although the fourth film appeared to conclude the journeys of iconic characters like Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, a surprise announcement at D23 in August confirmed that a fifth chapter is on the horizon.
This new sequel will see the original voice cast return to bring the toys back to life—however, this time they will face a contemporary challenge: adapting to technology and competing for the attention of children engrossed in their devices.
Tim Allen Calls the Toy Story Sequel “Really Good”
In a recent interview, Tim Allen provided insights from his first recording session for Buzz Lightyear, expressing confidence in the sequel’s quality. “I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago. It’s a very, very clever story,” he remarked.
Allen continued, “Do you wanna do five of these? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”

It’s worth noting that Allen did not reprise his role in the 2022 film Lightyear, which saw Chris Evans take on the character. As a result, fans have not heard Allen as Buzz in over five years.
Reflecting on his return, Allen expressed, “It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times.”
With enthusiasm, he affirmed, “It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”
The official synopsis for Toy Story 5 hints at the exciting plot: “The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and this time around it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exponentially harder when they go head to head with this all new threat to playtime.”
Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026, and is sure to be a significant event in the animation calendar.
