The Dragon Ball Super Gallery has granted Toyotaro, the official mangaka of the manga, the opportunity to create a cover in honor of the series’ 40th anniversary. This was a touching moment for fans worldwide, as the cover serves as a tribute to the legacy of Akira Toriyama, who sadly passed away on March 1, 2024.
Numerous well-known mangaka have added their unique touch to the Dragon Ball Super Gallery, showcasing their own renditions of covers from the original manga series dating back to the 80s and early 90s. Each mangaka will reimagine one of the 42 original manga covers by November 2024, with Toyotaro’s contribution expected to hold great sentimental value as he is the successor to Toriyama.

Fans React Emotionally to Toyotaro’s Cover for the Super Gallery Project
The Super Gallery project welcomed its newest mangaka, Toyotaro, and the response was as expected – filled with emotion and inspiration. The world was rocked by the passing of Akira Toriyama on March 1, with even presidents of nations grieving his loss. It was no surprise that fans were eagerly anticipating the works of his successor.
The cover, in Toyotaro’s signature style, showcased Goku, Mr. Satan, Majin Buu, and other characters from the beginning of the series, like Android 8, as they fought off adversaries. It was a fitting tribute to Toriyama’s work.
“If you told me Toriyama himself came back for one last cover, I’d believe you. He picked well, RIP,”someone said.
“I was kinda wondering if Toyotaro was gonna be saved for the final volume but seeing this as a nod to OG DB makes my heart warm,”someone else pointed out.
“Ok so I’m rewatching Dragon Ball now and this is so crazy that I just finished the Muscle Tower arc YESTERDAY. This is legit badass and so incredibly well done, all the references are just like so spot on, fantastic,”another person said.
The Future of Manga
Given his apprenticeship under Toriyama, it is only fitting that Toyotaro has taken on the responsibility of overseeing the Super manga. This was a widely anticipated move by fans following Toriyama’s passing, and it appears to align with the direction that Shueisha is pursuing.
Additionally, although Toyotaro has faced some criticism, he continues to garner widespread respect within the fandom and maintains confidence in his skills to continue the series.
“Toyotaro couldn’t have done a better tribute. Easily one of the best covers of the project,”someone said.
“I just re-read this portion of the red ribbon army arc recently and this is super cute!”another person said.
