A tragic incident occurred in the UK when a man accidentally stabbed himself while trying to prepare burgers in his kitchen. Barry Griffiths, 57, from Powys, Wales, lost his life in this unfortunate kitchen disaster.
After being unaccounted for over a week in July 2023, a welfare check was conducted, leading authorities to his home. Upon their arrival, it was discovered that Griffiths had passed away for an undetermined duration.
The cause of death was later established as accidental, with investigators concluding that he had fatally injured himself in the stomach while attempting to separate two frozen hamburgers.
Griffiths had previously suffered a stroke, which severely limited his mobility.
Initially, Detective Sergeant Stephen Vaughan did not observe any visible wounds on Griffiths when he was found in his bed. Blood stains at the scene were mistaken for chocolate, leading the detective to describe the death as “very private” and “unexplained.”
As the investigation progressed, authorities managed to piece together the details surrounding Griffiths’ tragic end.
“Initially, I believed the injury had resulted purely from an accident involving Mr. Griffiths,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees. “The bottom drawer of the freezer was left ajar, facilitating access to food items.”
“On the kitchen’s work surface, next to the fridge freezer, investigators found two uncooked burgers, a knife, and a tea towel,” he elaborated.
“The abdominal wound was situated at approximately the height of the work surface, leading me to hypothesize that Mr. Griffiths was attempting to separate the frozen burgers with a knife,” Rees concluded.

Even after ruling Griffiths’ death as accidental, a thorough investigation into his financial situation and personal relationships was necessary to eliminate any possibility of foul play.
Investigators found no signs of theft, aggression, or indications of self-harm, further corroborating their theory regarding the accident.
Additionally, Griffiths’ previous stroke limited his motor skills, heightening the likelihood of such an accident occurring.
While accidental deaths are infrequent, a similar incident took place when a 14-year-old girl tragically died after falling down a waterfall while taking a selfie in July of this year.
Her demise occurred during daylight hours, but her body remained trapped between rocks overnight until authorities could recover her remains.
