With the release of Episode 1 of Season 4 of True Detective, theories are pouring in – and some have convinced viewers that they “got it all” .
Jodie Foster and Kali Reis replace Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in season 4 of the popular HBO detective series, officially titled True Detective: Night Country.
The final chapter takes us to the dark and cold landscapes of Ennis, Alaska, where mismatched detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) team up to try to solve the mystery of the Arctic research station Tsalal – from which eight men disappeared without a trace.
There are still five episodes left in this new season, and many questions surround the various details of the case – notably its link to the violent murder of an Inuit woman. However, Internet detectives claim to have already solved everything!

A theory about True Detective season 4 convinces fans
Although Danvers initially rejects Navarro’s suggestion that the deaths of the Tsalal researchers are linked to the unsolved murder of activist Annie, she can’t help but ultimately make the connection — and for some, it is obvious: everything is linked to Annie’s struggle, and to the organizations that are after her.
On Reddit, one person suggests that Tsalal paleomicrobiologist Raymond Clark – whom Danvers saw in a photo wearing D’s pink jacket ‘Annie – “was involved in Annie’s murder, along with a few other researchers. The language was kept as a memory. The mine subsidized TSALAL.”
The theory goes on to state that Clark’s “meltdown was the result of paranoia and a guilty conscience messing with his head. Maybe he went crazy and chased everyone away.” The user then recalls the opening scene where a herd of caribou jumps off a cliff for no apparent reason. “Reindeer jumping off a cliff were fleeing from men crossing the ice,” he explains.
This theory is made all the more convincing by a rather interesting but sinister Easter egg – Raymond Clark could be a reference to Raymond J. Clark III, a real-life Yale lab technician who murdered a doctoral student, Annie Le in 2009.
In response to the post, someone added: “There is an Alaska Native mythology about polar bears that says they “jump into the sky” to avoid being hunted. I think anything to do with animals is probably going to draw heavily from indigenous stories and beliefs.” Another commented: “This is a good caribou trail. They are definitely an important clue. But for me the caribou have gone crazy like the townspeople. Ghosts are hallucinations caused by something in the ice.”
Which brings us to the next theory – that the mine generated some sort of contamination, causing researchers and other locals to experience hallucinations or strange behavior. “Scientists discovered that the people at the mine contaminated the water supply, so the mine sent in goons. Everyone is crazy about the water,” commented another Redditor.
“Or, I don’t know EXACTLY how everyone starts to become delirious, I just know that they are, indeed. I think Rose has dementia – “Travis showed me” sure, but to me she looks like someone who wandered in the snow for a long time before finally coming across the men.”
“I think suggesting that the scientists had self-inflicted wounds is a great nod to Dyatlov, and I wonder if we are seeing collective delusions due to contaminants from the mine and the influence of the characters. on top of each other – Jodie Foster’s memory is triggered by the car accident in addition to the contact with Navarro and vice versa; Do they happen to see the same polar bear with one eye missing?”
Answers from the Dyatlov Pass affair for season 4 of True Detective?
For the uninitiated, “Dyatlov” refers to the Dyatlov Pass Incident, a mysterious event that occurred in the Northern Ural Mountains of the Soviet Union (now Russia) in 1959.! And the case is precisely one of the inspirations for True Detective: Night Country
A group of nine experienced hikers, led by Igor Dyatlov, had embarked on a ski expedition to reach Otorten mountain. But they never reached the end of their journey, and their bodies were discovered weeks later in enigmatic and disturbing circumstances.
The hikers’ tent was found torn from the inside, but no signs of a struggle on the bodies. However, some are in very poor condition: one is missing his eyes or tongue, others have fractured skulls, and the experienced hikers rushed out into the snow, without covering themselves. For those still wearing clothes, the clothes would have been downright radioactive.
If the affair has never had an approved explanation, season 4 of True Detective will not follow quite the same path: according to its showrunner Issa Lopez in an interview for Vanity Fair, “not all the details, not all the questions will necessarily have a clear answer at the end.” The media still specified that the clues will be sufficient in the first five episodes for spectators to have fun putting together the puzzle themselves, at least concerning the subjects left vague by the series: you simply have to be ready to play the game.
Season 4 of True Detective started on January 15, 2024 on Prime Video’s Warner Pass.
