TWICE Member Faces Criticism for Consistent Weight Gain

Despite gaining weight, TWICE’s Jeongyeon continues to attract attention during the group’s latest airport appearance, with photos of her going viral and receiving negative criticism.

On July 12, 2024, TWICE departed from Gimpo International Airport to Osaka, Japan for their overseas schedule. Despite the photos being shared online almost a month ago, images of Jeongyeon from that day have recently gone viral.

On August 3, a user on the popular South Korean online forum Nate Pann shared a post titled “Jeongyeon’s weight gain again.”The post included photos taken by a journalist at the airport, and the original poster expressed concern over the idol’s apparent lack of effort to lose weight. They also questioned why she continues to promote with TWICE despite being ill.

Despite being a member of TWICE, Jeongyeon was forced to take a break from group activities in October 2020 due to her struggles with anxiety and a herniated disc in her neck. As a result of this injury, Jeongyeon had to take medication for an extended period, which caused her body to swell and experience hormonal imbalances, ultimately leading to weight gain.

In January 2021, Jeongyeon resumed her activities with TWICE. Two years later, in January 2023, it was reported that she had successfully lost the weight she had gained from taking steroid medications. However, it seems that she has since regained the weight.

The idol’s latest image sparked a divided response from Korean netizens. Some suggested that due to her ongoing illness, she should take a longer break from TWICE activities to focus on seeking treatment, resting, and losing weight. It was pointed out that her performances and dancing on stage may be worsening her injury, potentially contributing to her recent weight gain.

It was also noted by others that an idol’s job entails maintaining their physique. As a result, it is important for her to rest, recover, and slim down in order to meet fans in the best possible state.

There were those who lacked sympathy and questioned whether she was intentionally putting on weight in order to stay relevant, similar to Super Junior’s Shindong.

Several netizens commented, “

  • “People always say she is sick, but if she is actually sick, she should take a break. People always say that athletes who aren’t able to maintain their physique are sick, but shouldn’t the same standard be applied to idols too? If you don’t have the physique to be an idol, go rest.”
  • “Jeongyeon has been sick for a long time. She must want to meet the fans, but wouldn’t it be better for her to meet the fans once she is better? It must be hard to be in pain for this long, but doesn’t it get better if you don’t move?”
  • “If you’re sick, isn’t it the right choice to rest and receive treatment? If she keeps promoting and dancing like that, wouldn’t it slow down her recovery? She had a herniated disc, right?”
  • “The JYP Entertainment welfare is the best, huh…”
  • “Is she in a similar position to Shindong where’s she gaining weight on purpose?”
