TWICE Tzuyu’s Solo Debut Sparks Mixed Reviews: Some Criticizing Her Lack of Charisma

Despite sparking a debate among netizens about her star power, charisma, and performance skills being enough to sustain a solo career, Tzuyu’s announcement of her solo debut had ONCEs filled with joy. While some were ecstatic about her new endeavor, others questioned if she had what it takes to succeed on her own.

On August 1, JYP Entertainment released the opening trailer for Tzuyu’s first mini album and solo debut, “abouTZU,” which quickly gained viral attention in various online communities. This further emphasized the high level of anticipation among ONCEs, the devoted fanbase of TWICE.

Since their debut in 2015, TWICE has remained together. Throughout their rise to fame in the world of K-pop, each member has showcased their individual talents. The group has also introduced Nayeon and Jihyo in solo projects, as well as Mina, Sana, and Momo in the group’s debut sub-unit.

Many were taken aback by the announcement of Tzuyu’s solo album as most did not anticipate her being the next member, after Jihyo, to venture into a solo career.

Based on the preview, the youngest participant was seen displaying her graceful appearance, composed attitude, and even reenacted her viral archery scene from ISAC in 2019.

ONCEs were filled with joy upon hearing about the upcoming content from the TWICE member. The video rapidly gained popularity on various online communities and social media, with netizens expressing their excitement for Tzuyu’s highly anticipated solo.

  • “Finally, Tzuyu’s solo debut and first mini album! I’m so happy for her. Can’t wait for this.”
  • “Tzuyu totally deserves this recognition. She is truly the most naturally beautiful K-pop idol I’ve seen.”
  • “I must have watched this trailer about 50 times in tears, Tzuyu’s debut will finally happen!”
  • “I teared up. So proud and beyond happy for our Tzuyu! I cannot wait for this.
  • “The video was so pretty. Tzuyu’s legendary archery parody is even there.”

However, in a different post, certain netizens raised doubts about JYP Entertainment’s decision to choose Tzuyu as the next TWICE member to pursue a solo career. They speculated about the rationale behind this choice, while some questioned the idol’s charisma.

  • “She doesn’t have the talent nor the charisma for a solo. Whose idea was this?”
  • “For an idol who’s close in her 10th year, she’s still so awkward. A lot of JYP artists have this issue tbh.”
  • “Wouldn’t have been my first pick but sure.”
  • “She is really pretty but I don’t see any solo material from her. She is below average in singing and lacks stage presence, not to mention she always had that blank expression.”

A netizen shared:

“I found this odd at first? Although there’s the MiSaMo unit, surely Sana or Mina would deserve a solo album before Tzuyu, and they could make a sub-unit with Tzuyu Momo and Chae or Dahyun.

But from what Tzuyu’s family have been saying, I guess JYP scrambled to give her a solo gig, because from her fam it sounded like she was unlikely to re-sign when the next contract negotiations come up in a year or two.”
