One of the finest psychological thrillers on Netflix is about to depart from the streaming platform, so here’s all the information on this excellent horror film that you don’t want to miss before it’s gone.
Joel Edgerton gained recognition as an actor, first appearing as Owen Lars in the Star Wars prequels and later receiving widespread praise for his roles in Animal Kingdom, Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty, and The Great Gatsby.
However, the Australian actor was also nurturing aspirations to direct, and his impressive first film as a director can currently be found on Netflix, but it is soon to be removed from the platform.
Despite being both the writer and director of The Gift, Edgerton’s film was not expected to be a huge success. However, it surprised audiences and became a major box office hit, earning $60 million globally with a modest budget of $5 million. The movie was released in the summer of 2015.
The movie was also met with praise from critics, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% as well as a 75% audience score.

A riveting cat-and-mouse story, the movie features Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall as Simon and Robyn, a recently relocated couple in Los Angeles who are facing difficulties in getting pregnant after experiencing a miscarriage.
During that difficult period, Simon unexpectedly encounters his former classmate Gordo, portrayed by Edgerton himself. Gordo manages to become a part of their lives and gradually begins to exhibit odd behavior.
The events that unfold resemble a combination of Cape Fear and Chuck & Buck, as Simon’s past secrets resurface in the present, leading to disturbing and ultimately devastating consequences for the troubled couple.
Despite only directing one film since – 2018’s Boy Erased, Edgerton was still lauded for his subtle direction, as well as his ability to maintain a sense of foreboding throughout the film. It is a pity that he has not directed more films since then.
In addition, Bateman was praised for playing against type as the seemingly honorable family man who may not be as genuine as he appears.
The Gift is currently streaming on Netflix, but according to an article on the platform’s media site, the film will be removed on August 31, 2024. This means that subscribers have a limited time to watch the 108-minute film, which is definitely worth their time.
