Twisters director explains why “great” kiss scene was cut from movie

Twisters stands out from the 1996 film in numerous ways, including a significant kiss at the conclusion. However, director Lee Isaac Chung has verified that it was actually recorded, but ultimately removed from the final cut.

Despite the inkling of romance throughout, there’s no climactic kiss between Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler (Glen Powell), but Twisters is still a hit with audiences, heading straight towards a $72 million opening. Clearly, the new action movie is delivering on all fronts, with the only notable question being the lack of a romantic ending.

“I was unsure of what would be most effective, and whether a kiss should be included or not. To cover all possibilities, I filmed both versions. Therefore, there is a version with a kiss. Trust me, the two actors look amazing in their kissing scenes.”

The deleted kiss scene was captured during production and released online.

“Just to clarify, it’s not about their performance,”he stated. “I simply believe that this movie focuses more on Kate’s personal journey. In the original film, both characters were equally important, but in this one, Kate takes center stage. I felt that her ultimate goal at the end was not simply a kiss.”

Ultimately, the decision to eliminate the smooch was made in order to keep the attention on Kate and her journey.

He further elaborated, expressing the importance of rediscovering the happiness of her past self and the fulfillment she finds in her work. He also highlighted the value of having a support system and meaningful relationships within her community.

Chung admitted to thinking that the decision to cut the kiss may not have been well received by the studio executives.

He explained, “Although some individuals in the studios may be upset that I removed the kiss, I believe it was the best decision for me personally.”

Twisters is currently showing in theaters.
